Nice location along the river, the onsen offered peaceful setting, enjoyed our evening stroll through the community. Meals were good and plentiful. It was a nice property but not stuffy or over the top luxurious. Staff were excellent and helpful. The room had a very nice layout with lots of room, nice sitting area, nice balcony overlooking the river. An evening walk up the valley to visit the rest of the onsen town is a must, especially for Miyazaki fans. Everyone should experience a ryokan stay. It did not appear that they cater to overseas visitors which was great for felling like you were getting an authentic experience. The customs and rituals that go with a ryokan stay are not intuitive for an overseas traveler, but really should not be missed. It is one of the top experiences when in Japan. We are glad our son was along to explain things to us, it took a lot of the worry out of our stay.

The owner used to live in US and is able to explain the interesting customs of Japanese inn culture. Here, you can get back to basics; rest, hike the surrounding hills.

We spent two nights in the Hana room, with the private onsen on our balcony. The onsen was incredible! Hot! (we had to cool it down periodically with the cold showerhead, or have a cold shower and jump back in, which felt wonderful!) Walked up to the lake - a bit of a hike at 1 hour 20 minutes uphill each way! It’s pretty, but personally the incredible blue of the river is way more beautiful! If you walk into town you will pass deeper sections of the river which, especially in the afternoon, go an incredible shade of blue that my eyes could not believe! The beds in the room are on the firmer side, though still comfortable. We had to connect the tv to the internet using Google translate, it would have been nice if it was already connected for us. The food - lots of attention to detail, beautifully presented, and so many tiny bowls for each meal! It was a little on the bland side for us, but I understand that’s the style, and it made for a bit of a detox. We were certainly full at the end of each meal! Unfortunately the town is pretty much closed on Tuesdays so there was nowhere we could go for lunch. Lucky we had snacks in our bags that got us through. The private onsen you can use all looked lovely. We had our own one so we didn’t use them, but would have enjoyed them if we had one of the other rooms. The staff are all lovely, very friendly and attentive. We were glad to have gone there. Note: if you are catching the shuttle bus back to Tokyo station, make sure you go to the bus stop a bit further on from the local bus! Despite asking staff they told us to just wait ‘at the bus stop here’ and didn’t even mention there were two bus stops! If it wasn’t for another traveler who goes to Shima Onsen frequently we would have missed our one bus for the day! Aldo note that it’s a four hour ride including rest stops, not three hours.

The hot springs are hot, but the quality of the hot springs is good and you can enter them almost anytime during your stay. As for the facilities in the room, it was good that a large gas heater and an air purifier were maintained and the power was strong. The room was cleaned properly. The meal is not a feeling of relaxing because it is a small dining room-style place. There is no item writing and there is no luxury feeling, but I think it is a delicious person. It is recommended to buy souvenirs at Nakaya Manju, which is located a little up the slope. Kibi Daifuku is rare and delicious. The hot spring manju is also delicious. We do not recommend the communal bath next door where you can rent a free bill at the inn. Because the receptionist's grandmother's treatment attitude is too bad. It seems that he mistaken the public bath for his own bath. I was yelled when I lined up before the time. If you can stay at the next Ryumeikan or Maruhon Ryokan or take a day trip bath, the quality of the spring is equal and you can relax. Above all, there is no danger of encountering this old woman, and there is no need to take a bath with care of the locals.

Absolutely beautiful location and multiple hot spring options! The buffet breakfast was exquisite as well ask the multi-course dinner. Sadly we only were able to stay one night but waking up in morning to see beautiful flurries of snow surrounded by mountains was much more magical and memorable than I imagined! During our stay, I even lost my camera and the staff were so kind to go down the mountain and mail it to me at the airport, speak Japanese to the staff at the airport to help me find it and I am forever grateful for their kindness and service. If I lost my camera I would’ve lost all my photos and videos of the trip! The staff speak Chinese and fluent English and so it was really easy to communicate with them. Will definitely come back!! First of all, when I arrived at the ryokan, they carried my luggage and guided me to my room, which made me feel comfortable. Immediately after arriving, I entered the large public bath (men and women change around 22:30) the next morning, but there were few people and I was able to soak comfortably. The temperature was just right for my shoulders. In the open-air bath, you could hear the sound of the river in front of the inn. For dinner, the focus was on rare ingredients such as river fish and duck, which were not heavy. There was no habit and it was just the right amount for a small eater like me. The rice cooked in the pot was delicious. Everyone at the inn was nice. The points pointed out in other word of mouth have been improved, and there was no particular dissatisfaction. I would like to come again.
