Dongjiao State Guesthouse

The service was terrible. Most staff had a sour expression, no smiles at all. There was no concierge to speak of, and no one to greet guests or help with luggage or opening car doors. The security guards at the entrance were old guys glued to their phones. It's a world of difference from staying at a Shangri-La. The worst was the lobby bar. The summer craft class description stated it was suitable for two adults, but the lobby bar staff insisted it was only for children and adults couldn't participate, even when there wasn't a single child or participant for the first half hour. Their service attitude was appalling. I've never encountered such a five-star hotel. If they don't know how to do it, they should go learn from Yangzhou Yingbin Hotel. The only good thing was the auntie who delivered items to the room; she was very responsive, polite, enthusiastic, and always smiling and thoughtful. She deserves all the praise, a stark contrast to the stiff, state-owned enterprise-like staff on the first floor. Haven't they been trained? Or is it all about connections? The only positives were the environment, being situated in a garden with fresh air and lush greenery, and the Dyson hairdryer, although it was a bit old. Good thing I wasn't staying long, or I'd be fed up with these people. The room facilities were old with cracks, and the carpet and sofa had stains (not the cleaning staff's fault, it looked like the kind that wouldn't come out and needed replacing).

I had high hopes for the State Guest House, and while I can understand the facilities being a bit old, finding mold was quite disappointing. The location is excellent, right within the Zhongshan Mausoleum, surrounded by a lot of greenery, making it very suitable for a family trip.

Consistently great! The rooms are spacious, and the service is warm and welcoming. It's located right within the Zhongshan Scenic Area, making it super convenient to visit attractions like Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum, Music Stage, and Meiling Palace. If these are your destinations, this is definitely a hotel to consider.

The room was quite spacious and clean, though the facilities felt a bit outdated. Even with a Dyson hairdryer, I think other amenities could use an upgrade. I chose this hotel, a state guesthouse, primarily for its proximity to tourist attractions. Honestly, I didn't have high expectations for the service, as previous stays at other state guesthouses often led to arguments over staff attitudes. To my surprise, it was quite good! Before check-in, the hotel repeatedly confirmed my mode of transport (self-driving or other) and my license plate number to ensure I wouldn't be denied entry due to traffic control. The front desk staff at check-in were very friendly and even proactively asked if I wanted to book tickets for the evening movie screening. I ended up watching 'Zheng Luoyang' and 'Kung Fu Girls' at the hotel, saving myself the cost of two movie tickets – a real bonus. The hotel offers a shuttle service to its entrance, and it's just a few minutes' walk to the Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum – truly unbeatable proximity. Plus, there's a shuttle bus around 9:15 AM daily to the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, and the front desk staff kindly registered me for it. Breakfast was quite substantial with a good variety, definitely above average for this type of hotel (though of course, it's unfair to compare it to a Ritz-Carlton or InterContinental). Fresh fruit was delivered to the room daily, and the mini-bar drinks were replenished every day at no extra charge – a nice touch! However, the complimentary snack was only a quarter of a small pastry, which was a bit…meh. The swimming pool is standard size, but I noticed non-hotel guests and swimming lessons happening, which made me feel it lacked a bit of privacy, so I skipped it. Overall, for visiting Zhongshan, staying here is a great choice. I did have a minor misunderstanding with the room attendant upon arrival, but in hindsight, I think it might have been due to regional linguistic differences. As someone from the North, I might not have fully grasped the Southern communication style. My apologies to that attendant for any misunderstanding.

I stayed here on my birthday, and they didn't offer any complimentary cake or fruit (which foreign-owned hotels usually do). The room had high ceilings, but otherwise, it was pretty standard, with the typical vibe of an older state guesthouse – no real surprises. The hotel grounds are huge; it felt like I walked forever and still didn't cover it all, almost getting lost, probably because it was the eve of a typhoon with constant wind and rain. The breakfast was a bit too salty for my taste; I couldn't really get used to it. I was also surprised by how many people were at breakfast, perhaps because everyone was stuck inside due to the typhoon. It was an experience, but I probably won't stay again, though the gardens are quite beautiful.

This garden-style hotel is absolutely impeccable. It's surrounded by a huge garden. The hotel itself is incredibly tidy, clean, and quiet. It's located right in the Zhongshan Scenic Area and even has its own swimming pool and cinema.

We booked a townhouse, which was perfect for a family vacation. It's conveniently located right within the scenic area and they even have a shuttle service. The room facilities were a bit old, but very clean, and the view was great. Overall, I recommend it.
