The Mrs. and I were on an extended vacation in Australia (3 months), which included a three-day drive of discovery between Sydney and the Sunshine Coast. One of our overnight stops was in Newcastle, where we stayed at the Crystalbrook. Typically, when we travel we stay at the nicest 4 or 5 star hotel we can afford (particularly if we can book it via Amex Play Fine Hotels and Resorts, which comes with a number of benefits), but we found the Crystalbrook almost by accident, as we searched for a hotel with a parking garage where our packed car could be kept overnight, versus on the street. Great find indeed. The Crystalbrook is a midsize luxury hotel, developed within a renovated office building. It is new(ish), fresh and well maintained. It is a bit quirky, thanks to some of the accommodation made as a former office building, but those quirks are charming, not annoying, or off putting. Accommodations were quite upscale – not on par with say the Four Seasons, but very nice. We dined at the in-house restaurant and found the food better than standard hotel fare, which was nice. However, the best trait of the Crystalbrook was its staff. Everyone we encountered was polite and pleasant. They made our overnight stay a positive one. I am not sure if we will have occasion to travel to Newcastle again, but should that occasion arise, will we be staying at the Crystalbrook. Should you have occasion to me in Newcastle, I recommend you stay there as well.

Hotel is in awesome location. The staff are excellent in all departments. The rooms are starting to look dated and tired. Need some TLC. The bathroom floors are grey and dirty in areas and lots of the timber panels in the rooms are starting to blister and have paint falling of them.

Great location, easy remote operated check in service.
Communal area presented well. The lift worked to go upwards from ground to level one, but it wasn’t functioning when we left (downwards function from level one to ground).
Room 1 - upon entering had a horrible dirty shoe smell. It has a major shower drainage problem where the fall of the shower floor runs into the room, possibly over time water on the carpet is causing the constant smell.
The hand basin drain was also blocked.
The renovation was modern, however the wear and tear is now evident. Could do with a bond clean and some maintenance. The ratings could improve easily if maintenance and cleanliness were addressed because the service and location are great.

Quite a nice old hotel that's been refurbished. Rooms are clean and nice- beds a bit too close together in a twin room, there's a fridge and coffee/tea making facilities. Lots of power points. Lighting could be better. We were there Easter Sunday and there was an all day rave until 10pm- the walls were shaking it was so loud! Shame it was doof doof music and not some decent stuff or we'd have joined in! The corridors are adorned with old photos/prints which is a nice touch. I liked the place a lot. Comfy bed, nice rooms. Good location.

Very impressed with hotel itself and reception staff, they went out of their way to ensure we were being looked after. We got a call ahead of check in to advise us we may want to reserve a table for dinner and then called us ahead of check in time to let us know our room was ready early.

After a tiring day of touring and driving, my husband and I were exhausted and ready to check into our hotel, only to find out we accidentally booked it the day before. We were warmly greeted by Jane, who immediately went to work to change things and get us a room. Jane was not only adorable, but super friendly, happy and it was obvious she loves her job and the people she works with. She showed us to our room which was even nicer in person than the pictures. Would HIGHLY recommend this hotel.

The first stop from Sydney to Brisbane, a very good hotel apartment. The front desk reminded that parking is free on the roadside from 5pm to 9am the next day. The facilities are complete, the sound insulation is very good, the air conditioning at the entrance and the music are all ready. Satisfied

I don’t usually review hotels because there are often too many negatives or the experience is just average. However, The National Hotel Newcastle stands out as a modern hotel that truly embraces 21st-century standards—something all hotels should aim for. The bed was incredibly comfortable, with the best mattress I’ve ever slept on in a hotel, and the pillows were perfect. I’m particular about cleanliness, and I was pleased to find no dust under the bed, thanks to the blocked-off design. There was a little dust on the bed board shelf, especially behind the iPad holder, but nothing major. The TV was large, high-quality, and had internet access, which is always a bonus. The blackout blinds and screen were excellent and operated with the touch of a button. The air conditioning worked well, though it was a little noisy at times, but not excessively so. The bathroom was well-equipped, with all the essentials and a good, hot shower. The contemporary art photography of the local area in both the room and throughout the hotel added a nice touch. The room offered a nice selection of complimentary coffee capsules and tea bags, along with a coffee machine, although the light in the coffee area wasn’t working (or I couldn’t find the switch). I also discovered a safe in the bottom cupboard and a luggage rack by the wardrobe, which at first glance looked like a folded ironing board. The hotel’s library area was a pleasant surprise—bright and open, with free tea, coffee, and three types of drinking water on tap. There were also USB points, charging sockets, and cubicles for private video chats. I appreciated the use of live indoor plants and original photography throughout the hotel. Another thoughtful touch was the drinking water stations located at various points, allowing guests to refill their bottles. The bar and restaurant area was also pleasant, offering a small but satisfying menu and a fully stocked bar. Additionally, the car park had several EV charging spots, making it convenient for electric vehicle owners. Overall, I had a great stay at The National Hotel Newcastle and look forward to returning!

The hotel is very general, listed four stars, but it is actually far from the international four-star level. The room is very small, but the facilities are general, the floor is below five floors, so any room type booked can not see the sea view. The room was very poor, the tea cups didn't feel washed, and the tea stains that were easy to clean were clearly visible. The tabletop of the room is covered with floating dust, and fine yellow hair can be seen on the bathroom wall.

For a hostel, the Newcastle Beach YHA is a great value for money. Location is perfect, 5 minute walk to the beach, right off the light rail from the train station and overall quiet (minus weekends). The vintage home has great curb appeal and is in overall good condition inside. The stained glass windows, deep couches and foyer/staircase are very comfortable to relax in. Kitchen is a little tired but overall in good condition and well stocked. Laundry worked well too and powder is available for sale. The bedrooms can get really warm and stuffy, even with the window open. And with no air con, summer would be hot here. Good storage with outlets in the rooms but the bed squeak and move around a lot of both bunks are filled. WiFi works well in the common space too. And the hostel has activities during the week, like a free sausage sizzle, which was fun. My only quibble was how well the WHV kids living there cleaned the place. Watching a few of them while eating or cooking, it seemed like a quick touch and go job. Kitchen doesn’t seem to be cleaned out regularly as I could smell rotting food regularly in the fridge. Would recommend it and would stay again, but if you want quieter atmosphere, don’t go on weekends.

Excellent
GGuest UserA very professional and friendly team! The manager in duty saved the day for fixing my booking agent’s stuff-up. We cannot thank her enough! Great location and very modern & sleek interior. The free brekkie is beyond our expectations. I’d definitely stay with them again.!
ZZHIGUOOpposite is the main beach. It is still very convenient to play the beach and the sea. The restaurant has a 180-degree floor view. You can enjoy it at breakfast. It is really good. There is a free low parking garage. It is two standard rooms connected together, which is really good. The bed in the standard room is very large, which is very convenient for family use. It ’s important to say that the hotel ’s restaurant service is really good. When I arrived at the hotel, one of my noodle cooker lines fell into the previous hotel and I went back to get it for another 2-3 hours. Later, I negotiated with the restaurant. Since the restaurant ca n’t cook takeaway food, the manager helped me think of a way to soak the noodles in hot water and then turn them in the microwave. Finally, Erbao had noodles and was happy. Wonderful.
There are some shopping malls near the hotel, you need to go a little earlier, and there are many Chinese shops, dim sum shops and Japanese food shops, as well as spicy spicy pots. The closer you are to Sydney, the more Chinese food features appear.
The ice cream shop opposite the hotel must go, go early in the evening, usually Australian shops open late in the morning, especially on weekends, and close at 8-9 in the evening.
PPius OttThis is an old-fashioned pub but the rooms were very nice and clean. Albeit somewhat small. There is some noise from the pub downstairs, but it's not too bad and it finished long before I went to bed.
Although there's no reception, you can just check in from the bottle shop.
The hotel is in a great location for shops, restaurants and cafes. It is a bit of distance from the centre of Newcastle but it's probably a busier area than the centre.
GGuest UserThis motel is by far the cleanest i have ever stayed in and thats alot. Not one finger print to be found. No mould in the Room. Equipped with the best hot chocolate yummo. Room attendants were smiley. Blonde receptionist was rather happy and a pleasure to me and the kids. Pool was to cold to swim in. Very quiet room despite the traffic ( must be sound proof or double glazed). This is a 5 star place with with 3 star prices. We will be back.
ZZHAOHUIHotel location is very good, very friendly, can store luggage, because the son sent to school, after going out to play for a few days, you can park for free. Clean and large, large area,
Had a lovely stay at the Mercure Newcastle. The place is centrally located for anyone travelling to Newcastle. It has a nice restaurant and very comfortable beds. The staff (esp Karen and Maddie) were very attentive. Highly recommended 👍
If I could give a rating of zero I would! I've stayed in budget accommodation before but this was more like a dirty jail cell. Dirty hallways, the floor in our room felt like it hadn't been vacuumed or mopped for weeks. Tiny moulded plastic shower room that looked like it had been ripped straight out of an old caravan (you couldn't even call it a bathroom!) with a toilet and shower with no shower curtain so water went everywhere as soon as the shower was turned on! The sink to wash your hands was on the other side of the room. The pillows were yellow and brown under the pillowcases so we used our own beach towels as pillows. Our little boy had to sleep in our bed as there was a suspect looking brown stain on the sheets on the bunk above our bed. Oh and to top it off, there were no bath towels as they had 'ran out'! Needless to say we were up super early after our 1 night stay to get out of there. The poor girl on reception the night of our stay looked like she was ready to burst into tears after dealing with several irate holiday makers when I went to ask about the towel situation. Definitely won't be staying here again and will be telling others not to either.
GGuest UserThe room is very large, and there is a large jacuzzi, you can check in by yourself, but I don’t have a driver license, and there was a problem with the verification point. I arrived late. I called the hotel at night and the staff sent a code. . No toothpaste, toothbrush cups, no slippers, you need to bring your own, everything else is good, living near Jesmond shopping center is relatively convenient
I stayed here for 2nights excellent customer service from the staff from check in to eating in the restaurant l had chicken Maryland well cooked by chef Joss who takes care with the way he presents his food masterfully cooked l was most impressed see by the photos all the staff take great pride in making sure all customers needs meet thankyou to all l will be back next month for a week
多多尔尼库宾黄公望This apartment is cheap, the sanitary conditions are very good, there are two balconies, the most important thing is to make your own cooking utensils complete, washing machine dryers and even washing clothes are prepared, the key is the geographical location is unique in the central area, the supermarket eats The slot machine arrived in a few minutes, and the friends were very happy. Although they had a little trouble before the check-in, they were arranged very quickly. I plan to go there for two days at the end of this month. I just remind everyone to make a reservation online in China. After the order is confirmed. Be sure to check the password information of the room. There is no key in this apartment. All the doors are opened with secrets. Be sure to remember.
