I spent at Kaniyu 2 nights and absolutely loved it! Upon my arrival, there was an English-speaking staff member at the reception, Mr. Tamaki, who kindly upgraded my room for free - thank you so much for that! The room was spacious and clean. It was a bit cool inside, but the heating system worked really well and warmed up the room quickly; the controls were very simple and convenient to use. The futon was comfortable, the blanket was warm and cozy, and although the pillow was a bit too firm for me, I slept just fine without it. The room was equipped with everything needed: towels, yukata for changing, bathroom amenities, and more. Both breakfast and dinner were made from a variety of fresh ingredients — everything was delicious and filling. I tried many dishes for the first time and really enjoyed them! The stuff was very nice and friendly, a canteen lady who helped me to take a picture was very kind! The onsen was absolutely amazing. The hot, milky water was incredibly relaxing (not that smelly for my taste), and the cool outdoor air felt refreshing. I visited it after sunset as well, and it was an unforgettable experience: chilling in hot springs while watching night sky and listening to forest sounds. --- To sum it up, if you're looking for a peaceful retreat off the beaten path and for affordable price, then this place is absolute gem~ P.S. l was mesmerized by the road trip to the Kaniyu itself: mountains, rivers and lakes, a troop of monkeys on the side of the road, tunnels, a hairpin turns and so on.

This is a very remote and outstanding onsen. My three-night stay with my brother was at the end of a two-week onsen trip where I visited Noboribetsu in Hokkaido, Kinosaki onsen, and Tenzan in Hakone.  Kaniyu was a fabulous onsen and great ryokan, even in comparison to such strong competition! The baths are stunning, with great variety in water and temperature, and amazing rock formations. All next to a rushing mountain stream which gives such a nice sound in the baths as well as our room.  The hospitality was also excellent, and the food was well prepared, beautifully presented, and generous.  Wonderful place, I highly recommend it!!

A tad far but very rustic place to stay overnight. Onsens are great and great views. The breakfast and dinner could be a tad more exquisite

Love the area and the outdoor public baths. The meals were good. My husband complained that there’s no meat but I like all the vegetarian dishes provided. Tasted very good. There’s a small fried fish and few sashimi slices. My husband rates the food to be 3/10 while I rate it 5/10 as I am amazed at how they make vegetarian dishes so well. They do not serve any fish for breakfast which is quite unlike other ryokan we had been to. They had more vegetables and an egg for breakfast. I liked it though. The ryokan had free shuttle service for pick up and drop off to coincide with the bus times, very convenient, responsible and timely.

A very authentic experience in Japan out in the nature. Its very secluded - which is the reason why you book such a hotel. It takes a bit of effort ro get there, but its totally worth to see. Thanks again. Arigato.

It was truly a hot spring. If you want to experience this hidden hot spring, be sure to check it out. You can't drive to the inn by car, so please use the free shuttle bus.

The old hot spring hotel is worth a try. It takes more than 2 hours to get there by bus from Kinu River. The environment on the mountain is good and there are monkeys nearby. The only drawback is that the food is average.

The overall service is acceptable, except for the slightly inconvenient shuttle bus service, as the price and facilities more than make up for it.

There are various hot springs, and both the open-air and indoor baths are sulfur hot springs, which were amazing!! The food was mainly mountain vegetables, and the draft beer and lemon sour after the hot spring were delicious! It takes quite a while, 100 minutes by local bus from Kinugawa Onsen Station, followed by a 30-minute shuttle bus, but it's a truly hidden hot spring where you can enjoy something out of the ordinary. I'd seen the bathkeeper on TV, and he was friendly, but also passionate, so it was fun to talk to him. Next time I'd like to go during the snowy season.
