Andaz Ottawa Byward Market

I will pick up on several themes from previous reviewers, but cannot be as generous in my score. The room we had was comfortable and bright, but that is pretty much where the positives end. There is a severe shortage of experienced staff. This impacts the check in experience, the cleanliness of the rooms and the availability of services like the bar. We had a note presented with some fresh towels which apologised for the lack of room servicing due to staff shortages. I had to take the rubbish from our bins down to reception! The surrounding area has many middle of the road eating/drinking establishments, with a few gems within walking distance, although walking round the area is not a pleasant experience. There is high homelessness and you are regularly hassled by beggars. The adjacent construction site starts at 0700 with constant jackhammering until 1630. Not the hotel’s fault, but very invasive noise pollution! We submitted some laundry to be attended to with the promise of a 24 hour turnaround - essential for us as we were on a tight schedule. The laundry was not returned and following a stressful 90 minutes while the hotel tried to locate the laundry which it claimed had been sent to an external provider, it was eventually returned unwashed, having been left in a corner in “housekeeping “. The lady who found it graciously took it away and laundered it herself, for which we were very grateful. I would not stay in this hotel or neighbourhood again.

Located in West Ottawa, the hotel is conveniently located next to the market, with Walmat walking for 10 minutes and Ottawa Outlets nearby. The room was clean and the front desk staff was warm. The hotel’s restaurant is also good, offering burger sandwiches. Free parking
Comfort Inn Ottawa East

It's a Comfort Inn, so a bare bones motels. But, during COVID-19 they have gone below bare bones.....which is impressive in itself! Room was clean and had a fridge, microwave, TV, Iron, Iron board, alarm clock, phone, 2 sets of towels, shampoo, conditioner, and moisturizer. Motel authorized $100 on my credit card for ”Amenities”.....LOL...... sorry you have no amenities, say it like it is a ”Damage Deposit”. What has changed is: They have coffee maker in the room, but no coffee. Sorry but not sure how COVID would be spread by making coffee in your room. No hairdryer in the room. The vending machine was almost empty. The air conditioner was HORRIBLE, no more than a fan and during a heat wave, this sucked! Couldn't sleep because it was so hot. No continental breakfast, but they do have a bagged breakfast of orange juice, yogurt and a cheap granola bar. This could be SO much better, there are bagged muffins and fruit that should be in the bag. The motel is within walking distance of the Lone Star restaurant which was great! Overall NOT impressed, and will suggest to the company not to book me here again.
The Westin Ottawa

So nice to have a hotel conveniently located to nearby points of interest. It's a busy area, though, so be careful when crossing streets! It's evident the hotel is aging but our accommodations were nice & one could see that updates to decor, shower, etc. were somewhat recent. The shower area was huge (perhaps they got rid of the bathtub & just extended the shower area???) Must use room key card to access the elevator to guest room floors. Appreciate the extra security! The staff was responsive when we asked for additional supplies. The breakfast area was very nice, with great views. But the buffet is quite pricey as are individual menu selections. Better to grab breakfast in one of the many options in the neighborhood. There is also a restaurant on-site, again, very pricey. With so many options nearby, why not experience the city? We found the area to be quite walkable & were able to take in quite a few sites in our brief visit. Our experience at the Westin was positive; we understand the minor inconveniences of escalator repairs, etc. are part of general maintenance and didn't let that influence this review.
Ottawa Marriott Hotel

The hotel is simply bad on all counts - cleanliness, sleep quality, unexplainable bill charges. But the main thing for me was that the cleaning staff came into our room when there was a “Privacy Please” sign on our door while we were out. I have been traveling for work since 2005, weekly, and the DND sign was always something that ensures your privacy in any hotel, any country I have been to. The funniest thing is that the hotel declared they would not be cleaning the room for the duration of my stay in the pre-arrival email, which made me happy, and then they still came in to clean it, despite the sign. I called the front desk immediately when I saw it, created a big issue, and they told me that the clean-up was requested and SHEDULED by me. I explained it was impossible and how upset I was, and guess what - NOTHING happened to make things better for us, absolutely nothing. The manager did not call to apologize, there was absolutely no reaction to this, pretty big in my opinion, issue. So yes, hotel folks, if you are reading this – I did bring it to the attention of the staff. Compared to that, the rest was not as outrageous, but still quite bad and generally important to the quality of the stay: - Cleanliness: When we arrived, the toilet seat was dirty, there was pubic hair in the shower and the shower gel dispenser was empty. I did not want anyone in my room, so I sanitized all impacted surfaces, decided to use the little soaps for the showers instead of the gel and moved on. Ironically, when they broke in to clean my room, they still did not fill up the shower gel! That made me laugh when I stopped crying. - Beds: As another review here mentioned, beds are terrible. It is like sleeping on a water bed, you can feel every little movement, and between that and the old pillows, you are lucky if you get any sleep at all. - Room charges: Unlike any other hotel, this one did not send the email with the bill on the morning of the departure. Naturally, after what I have been through there, I decided to check the bill before I leave instead of just leaving like we do. I had booked using points, so my bill was supposed to only have parking charges + tax. However, when I got the print out, there was an additional $38 CAD per night charge just called “Room”, which the front desk could not explain. The further the conversation went, the more defensive the front desk representative got, until eventually they angrily removed the charges. Not even an apology or any sign of regret that there was a mistake, but a whole lot of attitude and pushback on the paying customer who happens to also be a platinum elite at this chain. Still remains to be seen what ends up being on the credit card – I am seeing some strange charges in the ‘pending’ status. As I was coming down to get the bill, check it and leave, I was squirming as I was expecting to be asked ‘how was your stay’ as usual, and I would not have known what to say. “I told you how it was la

I have visited this property several years ago and it was really run down. But now there is no change. The rooms need to be painted as there is paint peeling off the wall! The check-in staff were really rude and didn’t recognize I was a choice member. One thing I might add I don’t know if all rooms have been renovated and look the same as it’s a problem with some Econolodge hotels that every room looks different. Room: I had a 2 queen bedroom on the 1st floor exterior corridor. The bed sheets were yellow and the room didn’t look modern at all there was mould in the bathroom and the floors didn’t look clean. The coffee maker was dirty and the coffee didn’t taste good at all. I didn’t enjoy the beds as they were uncomfortable the heater was so loud and smelt weird. There was no fridge or microwave in the room even though the guy on the phone said there is in all rooms. Breakfast: I do want to say that the breakfast was a bit week and didn’t have much variety though. I think the rooms should get newer coffee makers and better coffee and the amenities in the bathroom were a bit cheap. Overall my stay was very miserable and was not up to my expectations of any hotel budget or not. I would stay away as this isn’t even my a good deal! Unless changes are made I will not be staying here!
