"This hotel is just okay. We came on our honeymoon for the second part after being on a safari in Tanzania. We wanted to go to the Maldives but were under the illusion Zanzibar is the new upcoming Maldives’s and was a shorter flight from Tanzania - so we went for it. We were half board and stayed in one of the villas. There is 2 villas in the hotel and 4 bedrooms in the main hotel. The roads to the hotel aren’t the best. And the road up to the hotel entrance, you think you’re going to somewhere not great. Pretty scary at night anyways. I don’t know how else to put it. It takes around 1 hour and 30 mins to get to the hotel from the airport. Not one part of the journey was going through anything nice, just villages and towns where there is poverty and cars/bikes pipping at each each constantly so they don’t crash into each other. You need to tip everyone by the way - even people who handle your luggage at the airport. Make sure you do or they hang around basically staring at you until you do. (Not pleasant). You are greeted by the owners dogs, if you like dogs this is okay, but not the best of welcomes by dogs running around you after a long journey. We personally didnt appreciate it. The hotel generally needs some money spent on it inside as outdated and run down. The outside looks good if you were looking at it from the beach though. Food is just okay also. Nothing amazing. The breakfast was probably the better meal. We had fruit platters and scrambled eggs on toast or pancakes. The hotel has a gym…. Everything is made out of wood and is outside. (Traditional) but not what we expected and didn’t use it. The butler then went to take us to an outside shed to show us a bush baby. Which was inside there with the door shut, (to protect it apparently) but upon arrival is was lying flat on the floor dying, which wasn’t pleasant to see. The butler wasn’t to know this but it’s not what we wanted to see at all and was upsetting. Maybe the staff should check first before showing guests? The electric goes on and off constantly. (Maybe the hotel should get a better generator? So guests aren’t affected.) The water for the shower goes off when the electric goes off also, so you may be left with body wash on you or shampoo in your hair for a period of time until it comes back on and when it does come back on it might be for 30 mins or 30 seconds, so you better hurry. Not relaxing. And if the electric goes off before bed time then you can be woken up to all the lights coming back on etc. or your phone not charged for the next day. Internal doors within the premises make loud noises when being closed if they aren’t closed quietly or carefully, this can wake you up or disturb any relaxation. The tv in the bedroom is a smart tv so you can watch YouTube or Netflix which is good. You also have aircon and a ceiling fan in the bedroom. The bathroom also has a ceiling fan. The ladies in the spa are very good at their jobs and the spa is very relaxi"

"We stayed in one of the ocean front suits with the private plunge pool and I would absolutely recommend it to any couple that is traveling to Zanzibar. The room is surrounded by trees giving a sense of privacy, and the beach access is literally right outside your door. The rooms were beautiful and so clean. Geof and the rest of the staff were so welcoming and accommodating, they made us feel like royalty while we were there. The restaurant is incredible with a beautiful atmosphere, right on the ocean and the food is amazing. Couldn’t recommend more."

Boutique Hotel Matlai ★★★★
"What an amazing place. Even before we arrived there I had been impressed. I wrote several emails to the owner, Inge, and received replies almost by return. All her replies were helpful and answered my queries. We were blown away with this wonderful place. They had built the hotel from scratch and it is obvious that they have thought of everything. Each detail is worked out. Even having a place to charge our phones which is always convenient. The rooms are perfect and all different. We had the 2 rooms in Kidoshi which were rather Arabic and 2 rooms in Asili House which were more African. Beautiful toiletries where you could choose the scent for your bath and also for your room. Very comfortable beds and every amenity. There is a cabinet outside the room to get cold drinks at all times. There is too much to mention but it was all perfect. Management team Inge and Tim clearly care a great deal about the hotel and maintaining extremely high standards. They were always very friendly and helpful to us - both throughout our stay and over email in response to questions Perhaps best of all - the service from the butlers. The butler team was simply amazing, such lovely people, all with professional yet personable service. The attention to detail and effort put into service each day and night was amazing. The staff are helpful and friendly. Nothing is too much trouble. You can also play football, darts, boule, ladder golf and volleyball with the staff. The rooms are immaculate and cleaned regularly. Breakfast is from a vast choice and can be eaten anywhere. The all-day menu contains anything you might want. There is a new dinner menu with many choices every night. All delicious. We were an extended family of 9 people of varying ages and there was always something for all of us. Sometimes so much it was difficult to choose. The facilities are plentiful - spacious grounds, lots of sunbeds, hammocks, daybeds etc. for a small amount of people (only 4 rooms). The grounds are so well-kept and beautifully designed. It is hard to describe how perfectly balanced this place is The location is on the beach. The tides go in and out quite a long way. It is interesting to walk on the sand (in reef shoes provided by the hotel) and see all the sea urchins, brittle stars and water snakes stranded in pools. We went on a Dhow boat and snorkelled with lots of fish, clams and anemones etc. We then went on the boat to an area full of star fish. There are other interesting trips we did to Stone Town, on quad bikes to a village, a spice tour and visit to the National Park to see Red Colobus monkeys. We didn’t want to leave and all want to return. I had hoped that my family would have a holiday of a lifetime………..they did!! Thank you so much "

Hekaya Zanzibar ★★★★
"We stayed in Hekaya during early november 2024,this was our second time there and we spent a very pleasant time.I had the opportunity to chat many times with the new owner,a gentleman from Austria. The room was ample and had all necessary amenities. The staff is nice and efficient. After many times in different parts of Zanzibar,we can say that its location is insurmountable ,just in front of an amazing sandbar and sea lagoon that can be enjoyable during high and low tides.I did not give five stars because of its kitchen that in our opinion should improve in terms of ingredients and creativity, however this is not a big problem since there are several good and affordable restaurants nearby like Baladin and Mathlai and also after my comments I hope they will work on this. We surely will come back, thank you very much."
