Will save you tons of unnecessary walking, but getting in/out is quite enjoyable to boot when traveling on the VRE. Taking the Manassas Line from Manassas Station to Washington Union Station. Directly in front of Union Station is the Fully narrated "Hop-On-Hop-Off Bus. Their buses circulate to all the major monuments and Museums. One arrives every 15-20 and the ticket is good for 24 hours. You wont miss a thing, you can stay in any site as long as you like.
