Long review coming, but wanted to be thorough. Returned home last week from our holiday at Hotel Sunshine Ialyssos, Rhodes. Website says the hotel is 4*, but it really isn’t as I’ve stayed in 3* which have offered more. On arrival, check in was easy, a map given to explain everything and we found our rooms ok. My friend and I had our own rooms – as we like our own space – which were on the same floor. The rooms are very basic, with only soap (my friend didn’t have this) and shower gel provided, and the shower in my room just had a screen – at the opposite end of the bath to the shower – so that was fun! Bed was uncomfortable and the pillows were hard. Also, the room had a kitchenette/living area which is a nice option, however the fridge was so noisy I had to close the bedroom door to sleep. My room also didn’t have any of the thinner curtains under the thicker ones, so for privacy, had to keep the curtains closed unless dressed as the rooms opposite could see straight in – not ideal. They do give a rota of what will be done housekeeping-wise for the week, which I did think was good – you don’t need bed changing, towels changing all the time, so we did find this good. Rubbish was removed every day, toilet roll added if needed. Hotel itself, you could tell it was nearing end of season, everything looked a little tired and worn out – unless this is it’s usual look. Limited cocktail supply was on offer and you couldn’t really see any other options for drinks apart from the basics. We spent our days at the Relax Pool – interesting that the bar only served beer, juice or water. Biggest thing which could be improved is the food, this did get really boring by the end of the week. Breakfast – none of the hot dishes were ever hot – just luke-warm. Need more than one decent coffee machine really, as there was always a queue. Poor layout with the bowls too – right in the middle, on the narrowest part of the serving area, with the jams, spreads, honey, etc – so was always so busy. Serviettes too, only placed in 2 locations, where it was busy! Lunch – can’t fault the selection of salads and cheeses. Hot food options never hot, just luke warm. Dinner – same as lunch, salads/cheeses good, hot food luke warm. Nice puddings, but after a week of the same at lunch and dinner – get a bit boring. Same food item, but with a different colour of sauce, also, no explanation of what anything was. Ice cream flavours good, but no proper size bowls to have it in anywhere near the puddings. There were gluten free counters and also at dinner a vegan option, however on the rest of the food there was often little or no description, and never whether it was suitable for vegetarians or not – which does limit you unless you can find a staff member to ask. Layout of the restaurant could be so much better so it flowed easier, and sad that the only thing hot was either toast or coffee (if you got the right machine). Mamma Mia restaurant – what a disappoint
