This hotel is underrated on here! I kind of like that to keep it as wonderful and not over-populated as it is. But that would be unfair to the GREAT people who work there. The location is EXCELLENT. Right on a beautiful, calm beach the grounds are very natural and peaceful. The pool is good for adults and kids. The people who work are were some of the nicest we met while in CR. The villas are spacious and well appointed (if a little outdated on the decor-- but tbh that made it all the more charming). I cannot wait to return to this slice of paradise.

The staff were amazing. From being greeted off the shuttle with cold cloths, chilled bubbly and quick courteous service to our villas, to knowing what foods we enjoyed over and over again during our stay. Christiam, Yunior, Jeanine, Hazel, Pablo, Jimena, Brenda, Jose, Gerardo and Wendy (apologies if I misspelled your name or missed someone from the team) were very professional, happy, experienced hosts and a great team that kept us happy, fed and satisfied with all our requests. The food was very tasty and many items to choose from, the a la cartes were great meals - especially when we were treated with special desserts for the birthday. There was one mishap that management fixed quickly and professionally. And the only issue we had was there were not enough shells to pick up off the beach.

I don't really understand the negative reviews on this spot..though if you're looking for fancy I'd suggest staying at the sister hotel Azura next door. Our villa was spacious and clean and about 50 ft from the ocean. We had a problem with the air con late on day 3 and the maintenance team worked on it quietly and quickly. The patio was lovely to sit on in the morning and at sunset. Everyone working here was friendly and helpful. Did they ask you if you wanted something every five minutes? no but that's not what we wanted either. Christian at the restaurant was attentive and kind and always up for a chat. My 8 year old got a jellyfish sting (not very common dont worry) and he brought her a remedy. The buffet wasn't huge but always had something for everyone, everything was cooked with care. I was impressed with the fruit and vegetables available and the meat was never overcooked as is easy to do in a buffet. No stomach issues here. It's worth noting this area has a high calcium content in the water which is great for bones but less so for bloating. There are filtered water stations available. The beach is safe and swimmable even for small children. It is protected by a reef so no rip tides. It's not clear water but you can walk over to Carillo where it is. Many if not all the sea tours leave from right in front of the hotel at the beach so even though it's a walk to town its situated well. Tricoloured squirrels, parrots, parakeets, iguanas and even tiny owls are all seen from the property and the people here respect and love the beauty of the area. We could have happily stayed another week.

Super disappointed with this place. Rooms are run down, over priced, and a bit “scammy”. - Beds are horribly uncomfortable. Have tiny pillows, brutal mattresses, and make a noise every time you move. - The rooms are in disrepair. Holes in the wall, and not fully functioning. In our room the sliding door didn’t lock most of the time, toilet was clogged, linens were ragged, and there was construction items laying across the floor (screws, drywall anchors, drywall dust, etc). - It’s not all inclusive. Scam advertising. Drinks are wildly expensive and made with poor ingredients. - Ordered a drink at the swim up bar and was charged $6. Great! When they asked me to sign off, the bartender had scribbled off the $6 and wrote $12. Never said a thing to me about it. It was well liquor, watered down, and mostly ice. - The resort is concerningly empty for high season. A huge resort and only a handful of elderly Canadian couples. No atmosphere, not well lit at night, weird vibes. Seems like it only exists as part of a package for Canadian travel agencies. - Getting to downtown is a pain. A shuttle would be a great options but not offered. There is no uber in Samara, the cabs stop running at 9pm, and it’s unsafe to walk the beach at night. - Some of the staff members were indifferent at best. The male server at breakfast was openly hostile. Rolled eyes with coffee requests, etc. very odd. - As a single plus (reason for two stars). The beach is really pleasant with very easy access. Stay elsewhere. Seems like they couldn’t care less. Rooms are crumbling. Beach and Samara are wonderful to visit!

We went again back to Villas Playa Samara for 2 weeks in Feb as we were there in Jan as well. Loved it even better. This time we got a ocean front Villa. Jan had more kids and Feb was nice and quiet. Lots of Canadians and a few from the US. All great people. Now The food was EXCELLENT and each day and night always something different. Very tasty. The Chef named ENOC was so sweet and went out of his way to cook anything we wanted. Some of our friends caught a bunch of fish and he cooked it up so wonderful for them as well. He loves his job and he does things from the heart. We sure hope he stays there for us for next year. Great job and again food was wonderful. Bartender Hazel, Brenda, and Joseph were all great and treated us like Kings and Queens. Everyone loved those kids. They work so hard and so nice and the service was always top Notch. The beautiful birds, and Iguanas and squirrels were so sweet and the property was so tropical and peaceful. I slept at night hearing the waves. Also the ocean was warm like a bathtub. This hotel is older but has the old school charm, and so clean and out of this world . Don't let anyone say otherwise. We travel a great deal and would come back over and over again. Loved our trip and Thank you to everyone who works there who made it so wonderful for us. Miss you all so much. See you next year. Heather & Randy

Upon arrival around midnight our time, we needed to deal with the Azure resort night manager Luz Wendy as there was no front desk for Villas Playa Samara. Luz was ignorant, had no customer service skills and did not care that we traveled 24 hours. When we entered our Villa, the kitchen taps were making a VERY loud noise and we had to go to the front desk 3 times to get this resolved as we could not sleep. They ended up replacing our kitchen taps in the morning. The second night we also needed to deal with Luz in regards to our A la Carte. This was also a very unpleasant experience as he was stating that we did not have A la Carte, which indeed we had paid for 3 of them when booking with our travel agent. It was finally resolved and indeed we did have 3. Needless to say, Luz should not be a manager nor should he be dealing with any customer. Not sure how he ended up in that position?!? I asked him to speak with his manager and he blatantly told me NO, he was the manager! The staff at Villas Playa Samara on the other hand were very pleasant. I want to give a shout out to 2 staff members at the buffet which are Christian Bustos and Joseph Arguedas. These 2 individuals were very friendly, always happy and pleasant... Two wonderful and polite gentlemen. They assisted me in any possible way that they could. I asked for the contact info of the resort manager to discuss but apparently there is nobody and I was advised to write a review on TripAdvisor. The owner is someone from Quebec, Canada. I would like someone from upper management to contact me so I could discuss this further. It will be interesting to see if I get a response.

Had an amazing time and stayed in the villas. Staff was awesome especially the bartender Hazel and chef Inoc. Drinks were perfect and the fresh fish we caught was prepared by chef Inoc in which he went above and beyond! I can not express how professional he prepared our meal for us. We will definitely be back and felt so welcomed at this resort. So personal.
