Sam's Bungalows and Treks

I had the most incredible few days at Sam's Bungalows and could not recommend it more highly. Deeply immersed in the Bukit Lawang community, Sam's family has lived here for generations. His grandfather was a medicinal plant expert and closely involved with the early conservation efforts in the area. He's seen this place change over the decades and has so many stories to share. In a town where most of the guesthouses are owned/operated by outsiders, Sam's personal knowledge and family history is truly special. I spent five days there and wish I could have stayed for longer. Sam and his wife Ifat were so lovely and went out of their way to make me feel at home - from spending a whole day showing me around town and the market to patiently teaching me phrases in Bahasa. Sam even organized an interview with a conservation expert for my university project. Everything you need is at Sam's - comfortable rooms (including balconies with hammocks!), delicious food, orangutan treks, bike tours, etc. The views from the bungalows and restaurant are stunning - overlooking the river and the forested bank of the national park. The staff are so kind, truly making you feel like you have joined the family. And Sam's children! The absolute cutest. Thank you all for the best week. I can't wait to come back. A few other details: -The rooms are comfortable and spacious, including large beds, a private balcony, and beautiful showers made of polished river rocks. There is even hot water - not something to be taken for granted out here! -The restaurant is delicious and the staff go out of there way to make every meal feel beautiful and unique. It also has an incredible view - hanging out over the river with an unobstructed view of the wild forested bank on the opposite side. One of the other guests even saw orangutans from the restaurant! (Although I tragically did not) -Sam can organize anything you'd like, from orangutan treks to river rafting to cave exploration. His care for the environment here is deeply evident and when you book through him, you know you will be placed with ethical, local guides with an unparalleled knowledge of the forest. -Be careful of the river after heavy rains. It is normally very safe to swim in, but the currents get scary after storms. I had to be fished out by one of the kids from the village after the current swept me off my feet... don't be me! -Packing reminders: Make sure you bring bug spray! Also be sure to pack modest clothing, especially for women. It is a very Muslim community and you can show your respect by covering shoulders and knees at all times. -Plan to spend several days in Bukit Lawang. Most people only come for the orangutan treks and just stay a night on either end. I think that is a major mistake - there is so much to see and learn here. I could have spent days at Sam's restaurant alone, just listening to his stories and watching the wildlife along the river.

We spent 5 days in Bukit Lawang and had an amazing time at Sam's. Sam is a great host, he makes all of his guests feel so welcome. Great food, cold beer, lots of international travelers and amazing staff. We almost didn't find Sam's though, TripAdvisor has the address as Sampe Raya but Sam's is in Bukit Lawang. Hope that can correct that so more people can see why Sam's has so many great reviews!

I had the most amazing stay at Sam's Bungalows and Treks. From the most kind and welcoming staff, a trek filled with so many animals, the tasty food, and the comfortable room with a breathtaking view, it was an experience to remember. My family went on a day trek through the jungle and got to see many orangutans, gibbons and other wildlife. Our guides Andri and Reza were so accommodating and very educated on everything regarding the jungle with such a genuine passion. The trek through the jungle was extraordinary with the chance to view several orangutans in nature and the provided food was so delicious. If you wanted a more advanced experience like an overnight trek or for longer, they would have no trouble accommodating which is so incredible. Sam's restaurant has a spectacular menu with a variety of food and drink options. The chef was not only exceptionally talented, crafting each dish with fresh, local ingredients that truly made a delightful meal, but he was also very friendly. Overall, all the staff, especially Sam, Reza, Farhan, Irfan, and Andri, were warmhearted with a beautiful and friendly persona that made the experience unforgettable. We also met Rama at the end who was no exception. Andri made our experience truly unforgettable; we loved chatting with him and hearing about his adventures and experiences, and his warm hospitality never failed to make it better. Sam was incredible as he checked in with my family every night when we came to eat dinner to make sure everything was perfect. Finally, the room was gorgeous with a radiant balcony view of the lively jungle. It had plenty of fans which kept the room cool. Ultimately, our stay at Sam's Bungalows and Treks was an amazing mix of fun, relaxation, and friendly faces, leaving us with great memories and a real desire to return.

A wonderful, family run place to stay in a unique, truly stunning location. I travelled with my family (two children ages 9 and 11). The panorama room was perfect. My children loved sleeping on the sturdy bamboo mezzanine and my wife and I enjoyed the very comfortable balcony and jaw-dropping views of the rainforest. Sam has built this place up over many years and there is great attention to detail in the preparation of the rooms, the service and the food. I cannot recommend this place highly enough. It really is as good as the photos show it. We loved every moment of our time. It is charming but not worn, for example the bathroom was huge and as well-appointed as in any high end hotel chain. Things you should know before you book: the location is remote, it is literally in the jungle and you will have to walk up to it (your bags will go ahead by bike). Note that there are monkeys around and they can be naughty-jumping on the rooftops in the morning and stealing food if you leave it unattended. Love this place and will definitely be coming back.
