2-Star Hotels in San Francisco

Stayed here for 2 nights and was pleasantly surprised. Prices are quite affordable considering it's in San Francisco. The location was great. I booked this hotel in particular primarily because of its rather close proximity to the BART station. It is indeed only a 10-minute walk from Montgomery station, although if you're arriving from the airport be prepared to drag your bags uphill. The hotel is smack dab in the middle of Chinatown in a rather busy area. I never felt unsafe here, whether evening or early morning, as there are always people milling about minding their own business. If you like walking, you can journey to Fisherman's Wharf within 30 minutes on foot, which is what I did. You can also walk in the opposite direction toward Westfield and Target if you like to shop. There are several bus stops and tram lines nearby. As for the room, it was small but didn't feel cramped. There's no air-conditioning but it was rather chilly in July so I had no issues with heat. No problems with the shower either. Checking in and out were a breeze. I was even able to order food through GrubHub (because most restaurants in that area close at 8 pm even on weekends, which I found out the hard way!) I suppose my only complaint would be that you can definitely hear your neighbors at all times. I could hear someone stomping on the floor above, and sometimes I'd get noise from the rooms adjacent to mine. I was able to sleep just fine, though, as the bed was really comfortable. I'd changed my hotel to this one at the last minute and I'm glad I did. Apart from the occasional noise, I had a lovely stay.

I stayed here during a conference where the price was raised to $240/night. If the price had been quite a bit lower as it might normally be, I probably wouldn't complain much. The location is hard to beat in terms of proximity to Union Square and the Moscone Center, and the front desk staff was friendly. Other reviews have noted that the rooms are dated--and I found that to be true as well. But, my room was clean. The wifi worked, and the rooms were insulated from noise from adjoining rooms. However, there was hardly any noise isolation from the outside. I was on the 6th floor facing Geary Street, and I could hear just about everything going on well into the evening. The heat in my room was also not working until my last night there--and that combined with very thin covers left me pretty cold (though the bed itself was comfortable). When the heat did work, it made a strange noise reminiscent of a dying cat, so I ended up turning it off anyway. One tip for taller or larger travelers: I am 5' 2'', and the shower head was only 2 inches above my head. So if you're much taller than me, you'll be bending down to rinse your hair. You'll also find the bathroom overall to be quite small.

Enjoying my stay and peace. Front door is locked with room keys. Safe. Very comfortable and clean. Staff are nice and welcoming. Good choice for the price! Give it 5 stars for the overall comfort and the people who run the business. Not a 5 star hotel. But its overall stay for the price is good.

We stayed in a private room. It was very clean with a super clean bathroom. Enough space for us with hanging space (more hangers would be good) and places to put bags. Large number of electrical sockets. Good shower with complimentary toiletries. Check in and out was quick and easy. Location was good for us. We were able to walk to most places we wanted to. There have been lots of negative reviews about this hostel. We didn't have the same experience. I think the hostel should respond more personally to the negative reviews rather than the standard copy and paste comment they leave. This would give a better impression. We would stay again

If you're looking for bougie and fancy, this isn't the place for you! But if you want clean and comfy, this is the spot!! We stayed 3 nights @ the Castle Inn and couldn't have asked for better! The staff was great, our room was spotless (you could smell the clean), and we were an easy walk or Uber ride from everything we wanted to see. I know the ”motel-style” with external doors might turn people off, but we never once felt unsafe. It truly was a great stay and I'd book again without hesitation!

Second time I've stayed here and I'm sorry but I won't be going back. Can't fault the location, being near a cable car line and two BART subway stations, but (sigh) the private room we had here was a dingy, over priced hole. Staff on reception were also noticeably uninterested in our welfare. There was a nice reception lady who helped me with a tour booking. But the guys who booked us in, and booked us out, couldn't have been less interested. Put it like this: had the guy who booked us out asked, 'Hi, how was your stay ? How did you find your room?' (and he didn't ask this - or make any other comment) I would have replied, 'our flight to SF took 11 hours, and we then had to endure over two hours getting through US border security, while jetlagged, then a 30 minute ride on BART, then walked through the Tenderloin in the dark to get to the hostel. After all that it might have nice for your reception staff to at least ask, out of courtesy, how was our journey? Had we travelled far? Etc etc. The usual welcoming small talk. But no, this guy just wanted our IDs and my payment. No hello and welcome. Then there was the room with the bunkbed, the inward facing window and the faint but distinct odour of urine. Walls painted a ghastly shade of green. No air conditioning (when temps were 70-80F) and a small fan that didn't work from the start. The only window faced another window so you had to keep the curtains closed for privacy, which added to the dingy feeling. And for all this I paid over $1100 for seven nights. I know SF is expensive but I'd call that over priced.' Anyway, as I said, the guy who checked us out didn't ask how our stay was and so I didn't tell him any of this. Which is why I'm writing it here. I'm not expecting reception staff to form lasting relationships with customers. There's a high churn rate of faces here, as there are at most hotels and hostels. But I do expect 'hello' 'goodbye' and a room that doesn't smell of urine.

Beware of this hotel, my girlfriend and I accidentally booked a single room instead of a double room through hostelworld.com and the hotel let us know that when we arrived. Since there was no way we were going to stay in a twin bed, we wanted to upgrade to a double room. We were charged an extra $15 for that ”upgrade” but after we were charged Jay, the manager, said that the $15 was just for allowing another person to stay in our single room, not for a different room. They were out of double rooms entirely. If we had known this, we would have cancelled the reservation and gone somewhere else with a bigger bed. Even moments after he had just ran our card, he refused to give us a refund. So we paid for three days in a single twin bed at this hotel and had an extremely uncomfortable night the first night, and then booked somewhere else for the other nights because the bed was just too small for two people. The decent thing to do would have been to cancel our charge because we never wanted to stay in a twin in the first place, but Jay took advantage of us and charged us for the twin anyway. We talked to multiple employees at the hotel and none of them were able to help us. Really disrespectful and I would have thought they would have the human decency to refund us after we clearly did not want that room and they knew that. Stay away from this hotel.

The hotel is in the city center, mainly because it is near Union Square. It takes only a few minutes to walk to the Apple Store. There are also bus stops nearby to Golden Gate Bridge, Jiuquhua Street, Fisherman's Wharf, etc. Chinese staff speak Chinese at the front desk No problem communicating. But the room was small and a bit depressing. The slope from the subway station to the hotel is relatively steep, and it is tiring to drag up the luggage. It is not recommended to live there.

It is very close to Union Square, the Municipal Square and the subway entrance. Take the subway directly to the airport. The transportation is convenient. The hotel guy has a warm service and upgraded the room for free. Although the room is old, it is clean. Very characteristic small hotel. There are a lot of homeless people in the street below, but it's safe. discount price.

This hotel is only a few hundred meters away from the famous scenic spot Jiuquhua Street. The surrounding environment is very beautiful. There are special sightseeing buses passing by the entrance of the hotel, and it is not far from the famous tourist attraction Fisherman's Wharf. It is also about 20 minutes. There are great Japanese restaurants next to and opposite the hotel.
