"Tidy room, simple breakfast, but parking space is not enough."

Snow Peak FIELD SUITE SPA HEADQUARTERS

Snow Peak FIELD SUITE SPA HEADQUARTERS ★★★★

📍 456-1 Nakanohara, Sanjo

"Snow Peak Glamping Headquarters is located in the countryside, about a 45-minute taxi ride from Tsubame-Sanjo Station. There's no public transport or hotel shuttle service. I recently stayed at Arashiyama, which is also about 45 minutes from Tsubame-Sanjo Station in the countryside, and they offer a free shuttle service. Guests there save around 900 RMB on taxi fares for a round trip. Snow Peak only has 7 rooms: 4 cabin-style chalets, 2 50-square-meter suites, and one 100-square-meter suite with a hot spring. Unfortunately, these 7 rooms are in the worst location in the entire camp, tucked away in a corner with no open views. The 4 chalets, in particular, are situated in a completely uninspired spot. I honestly can't find a good reason to stay here. My room, number 1, faced an electrical transformer box, and room 2 faced a road with a small window looking out to the parking lot. You have no privacy in these two rooms without drawing the curtains; passersby can easily see in. Rooms 3 and 4 faced weeds and a fence. If your residential area has decent landscaping, the view there would be better than this. Actually, the chalets were clean, odorless, and had air conditioning, a bathroom with hot water, and a toilet, which is better than domestic campsites. However, the curtains offered no blackout at all, and I was woken up by the light at 5 AM. I checked out and left at 9:30 AM; there was no view and the room was small, so there was no point in staying longer. The hot spring is shared with campers and villagers who come to soak. It gets very crowded during the day, and you can bathe for just over 80 RMB. The hygiene is questionable. In other hot spring hotels I've visited, there are very few people, but here it was crowded and chaotic, so I didn't bother to go in. Both breakfast and dinner were terrible, the worst I've ever had at this price point for a hot spring hotel. The upgraded beef was chewy and full of gristle. Compared to the breakfast and dinner at Arashiyama, the food here was barely edible. Why can the head chef at a similar countryside establishment offer such a rich and varied array of ingredients, with such exquisitely presented and designed dishes, while the chef here just seems to be phoning it in? On the first day, I saw the chef's apron in the Snow Peak restaurant during afternoon tea, and it was very dirty, not like a professional chef with pride in their work. After two meals, it's clear this chef team can only manage simple tourist meals, and even those are slow to come out and lack coordination. The Snow Peak Art Museum requires a guide to visit at 2 PM, and you have 30 minutes to look around. Calling this an 'art museum' is a joke; it's merely an exhibition of products from previous years. It's just one large hall. You watch a 10-minute video, then look at some past products, and then you're out after 20 minutes. You can completely skip it. If there were displays of collaborations with local handicraft weavers from previous years or service demonstrations, I might find it interesting. Calling it an 'art museum' is utterly incomprehensible. Next to it is a shop, but the products aren't particularly striking, and there are even fewer standout items. I absolutely do not recommend staying here; having meals prepared by this kind of kitchen in a suite would be a nightmare. If you like camping and have your own car, you can come. The best views are in the common areas. You can rent tents and soak in the hot spring for 80 RMB. Snow Peak cafeteria offers ramen for 50 RMB and many other simple meals, and its operating hours are long. The Snow Peak restaurant is also open to the public for lunch, offering simple meals. The front desk staff are available from 8 AM to 10 PM and the service is quite good. The negative review is because it's too remote, and staying in such rooms with such views is really something to avoid."

Hotel Route-Inn Tsubamesanjo Ekimae

Hotel Route-Inn Tsubamesanjo Ekimae ★★★

📍 Sugoro, 2 Chome−19 19番地, Sanjo

"The feeling of the front desk was good. When I made a reservation without meals, I was surprised that breakfast was included in the good sense. I bought something I was planning to have breakfast at Aeon first, so I ate it too much as a midnight snack. But the breakfast the next morning was delicious. I am really grateful for the low-calorie, warm and fermented foods with a lot of Japanese food."

Hotel New Green Tsubame Sanjo ★★

📍 2 Chome-116-2 Sugoro, Sanjo

"The rooms are inexpensive, the transportation is convenient, and the surrounding environment is excellent. If I go again, I would definitely book here. The rooms are clean, the front desk staff are welcoming, and the overall experience was great. Highly recommended."

Rankeisou

Rankeisou ★★★★

📍 1450 Nagano, Sanjo

"A magical experience to stay at Rankeisou. The mountain surrounding n a flowing river besides a hundred year old ryokan is indeed special especially when everything was covered in snow during our visit. Dinner was exquisite n breakfast was fabulous. The experience was made even more special by Yukari san who took the trouble to explain to us the significance of the Japanese cuisines n the historical background of the place. We are indeed mesmerized."

Snow Peak FIELD SUITE SPA HEADQUARTERS ★★★★
"The room cleanliness was decent, but it was drafty in winter, making it quite cold when sitting by the window. The food was average; the breakfast boxes were laid out at a set time and were completely cold. The public bath, however, was very clean."

Rankeisou ★★★★
"Although the hotel was fully booked on the weekend, the staff only provided information on the reservation times for dinner and breakfast, and the private hot spring bath times (we misremembered the times after dinner and had to go to the deep hot spring instead). They brought our luggage to the room and brewed green tea 🍵. Dinner and breakfast on the second floor are served in private rooms. The experience was quite good; the room was set up in a historic tavern-style riverside setting, offering a comfortable view of the babbling brook while enjoying tea."
