"We opted for the Shangri-La Hotel for our first day in Shangri-La, primarily as a base to prepare for our journey to Meili on the third day. Anticipating potential altitude sickness, we wanted a comfortable place to rest and easy access to other areas. My travel companion, in particular, was keen to avoid dragging luggage through the narrow streets of the Old Town. Considering all these factors, the Shangri-La Hotel was our definitive choice. My only minor concern was the absence of diffused oxygen in the rooms.
As we were staying for consecutive nights, the hotel offered complimentary airport and train station shuttle services. The hotel proactively reconfirmed our flight the day before arrival, and our departure shuttle service was equally seamless. As expected from a well-established five-star hotel, the service quality was impeccable. Every staff member was remarkably courteous and polite, whether in the lobby, restaurant, or even in the room hallways.
The room itself wasn't overly spacious but featured a minimalist ******* design. It offered a distant view of Songzanlin Monastery, which I specifically chose. My thought was that if altitude sickness confined me, I could at least enjoy the scenery from the room. If you prefer not to venture out, the lobby itself is a beautiful and very photogenic spot, perfect for taking pictures everywhere. Housekeeping was meticulous, though the bathroom lighting was a touch dim. The room also thoughtfully provided extra duvets and blankets.
We had both our dinners at the hotel's buffet. For just over 100 RMB, the buffet dinner offered an excellent selection of dishes. While not extensive in variety, the quality was consistently high. I particularly enjoyed the salmon and herring roe; sashimi lovers would be very pleased. Generally, if a hotel's dinner buffet is good, their breakfast tends to be excellent too. True to form, I especially loved the savory butter tea and croissants.
In summary, my primary goal in Shangri-La was altitude acclimatization. I wanted a comfortable retreat within the hotel if altitude sickness prevented me from venturing out. For this purpose, the Shangri-La Hotel is an excellent choice. The hotel is a convenient 20-minute walk from the Old Town. The popular Xiangyang Market, a favorite among locals and tourists, is just a few minutes' walk away, making it easy to grab essentials or order takeout. Its central location, combined with exceptional service, makes it a truly wise choice."
