Shimanto Hideway Cabin Stay
Great host, very helpful. We stayed for 1 night during May. The cabin was very spacious and had some lovely touches, upstairs screen to stream from, free tea and coffee. The cabin is a detached building separate from the main building that has the shared bathroom in. The cabin also has no sink or toilet you have to also go into the main building which is not really clear in the description. Also be aware when booking that access to the property is via a sunken bridge (no sides or barriers) over the Shimanto River which we had to drive across after heavy rainfall.

Wij hebben enkele dagen mogen genieten van het prachtige Shimanto Riverside Hideaway. Dit traditionele Japanse huis is met veel zorg onderhouden: schoon, stijlvol en volledig ingericht in Japanse stijl. Een heerlijke plek om echt tot rust te komen. Wij zijn per trein naar Shimanto gereisd, een comfortabele manier om het zuiden van Japan te ontdekken. Het laatste stukje naar de Hideaway hebben we per taxi afgelegd – goed te doen en zeker de moeite waard voor de rust en schoonheid van de plek. Kenji, de eigenaar, is ongelooflijk gastvrij en gepassioneerd. Hij helpt je bij alles – van restauranttips tot dagtrips. Eén dag heeft hij ons zelfs persoonlijk meegenomen naar Cape Ashizuri. Onderweg stopten we op een afgelegen zandstrand waar schildpadden nestelen, proefden we de beroemde katsuobushi – gedroogde en gerookte vissnippers van bonito (skipjack tuna), die in deze regio een specialiteit zijn. Een unieke ervaring! Shimanto-stad ligt op 15 minuten rijden en is een charmant stadje. Wij hadden het geluk om daar het traditionele zomerfestival op 26 juli 2025 mee te maken: een kleurrijke optocht met versierde wagens, muziek, grote trommels, zang en dans. Prachtig! In en rond het huis kun je fietsen lenen (ideaal om de natuur in te trekken), op de rivier varen of zelfs walvissen gaan spotten (al gooide het weer bij ons helaas roet in het eten). Als alternatief bezochten we het libellenmuseum – klein, maar interessant. Kortom: zoek je rust, natuur, traditie en warme gastvrijheid in het zuidwesten van Japan? Dan is Shimanto Riverside Hideaway een absolute aanrader. Dank je wel, Kenji – we komen graag nog eens terug!

また行きたい宿
昨年につづいて2回目の滞在でしたが、ご主人の暖かいおもてなしのおかげで、楽しい一時を過ごすことができました。部屋や浴室、トイレもとても清潔に保たれていて、快適です。周辺の静かな環境もリラックスするには最適でした。
