"A nice little hotel run by a sweet old couple. The hotel offers a free private onsen which is located outside in a beautiful setting which you can book for 40min. The hotel also has a public onsen inside which is gender separated and where you can take a shower. The room is traditionally japanese style with a tatami mat, futon and low table. It was warm and cozy and there was plenty of space. A teapot was provided and you could make your own tea. You get slippers, a yukata per person and traditional japanese wooden shoes for outside. If you stay here you have the option of using the 9 public onsen. However, these are a short distance from the hotel away. The couple can't speak English but with a translator we were able to communicate. It was difficult to find an open restaurant in the village after 18:00. It is no problem to store your luggage in the hotel after check-out. The Snow Monkey Park was easy to reach on foot, even if it was more than 3km. We really enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to others."

"Wonderful hotel to experience amazing Japanese hospitality. Our family of 4 (2 adults 2 teenagers) stayed in a Japanese style Family room. Each night futon beds were made and in the mornings packed away by staff. The room size was comfortable and has a great view of the ski slopes. I have included a picture of the view from our room with the review. Our stay included delicious buffet breakfast and Japanese dinner. Staff were very helpful and accommodating, enhancing our stay experience. In terms of location, it is about a 15-20 mins walk to the ski fields, through the old town. Nice walk and very manageable. We’ll definitely love to stay again the next time we get to visit beautiful Nozawa Onsen."

"Some of the best customer service we've ever experienced. Ms. Abe was wonderful and her English was excellent. The outdoor onsen was perfect, truly beautiful. A big, well landscaped area, truly relaxing. All guests get to reserve 30 minutes of private use each evening, which was wonderful, but you can also go back during men's time, women's time, or mixed if you want to enjoy some more. The breakfast was also very good, and the room was sizeable. This was our favourite stay in Japan."

"I saw many Japanese elderly couples, girlfriends, and many students coming here to play. The hotel is very old, the air conditioner squeaks, there are some mosquitoes, and the refrigerator is sometimes good and sometimes bad. It was normal on the first day, but on the second day, all the fruits we bought were frozen into hard ice. But the hygiene is OK. You can see that they are trying their best to maintain it. In addition to the public hot springs, there are two private hot springs, Xing and Yue, which can be reserved by guests. There is free oden in the rest area every afternoon, which is very heartwarming. The breakfast is also good and very rich. In addition, Nagano and Shijiazhuang are friendly cities. Table tennis is very popular here, and there are table tennis balls in the lounge. The hotel is very close to Yudanaka Station, a two-minute walk, and is generally recommended."

"This was my first time staying in this area, but the landlady was very polite and explained everything in detail, which was very helpful. The indoor and outdoor baths were very comfortable, and it was a very satisfying hot spring trip. Dinner and breakfast were also delicious, and I was very satisfied. The location (cobblestone road) was attractive, as it allowed me to experience the atmosphere of a hot spring town. There are nine outdoor baths, and I regret that I was unable to visit them all."

"Mostly good experience. The staff was super friendly and accommodating. The French restaurant was delicious. And it was great that there was a ski rental and storage right inside the hotel. Added to that, the convenience of skiing right to the lift is heavenly. The bar/ lounge was chill and cozy. However it either seemed there was a shortage of staff, mostly new staff, or both. The mandatory dinner reservations were very restrictive even though when getting there at the reserved time, the restaurant was half empty. And most frustrating was that there was no options for getting any type of food after 8:30. So if you get hungry after that time or want a snack, you better pre buy one of the 3 options of instant noodles from the lobby store (before it closes also)."

"I highly recommend this hotel, it should be one of the best in Nozawa. The rooms are spacious and the hotel staff are also very professional and enthusiastic. I especially recommend the hotel's own hot springs, which have very good facilities and are decorated in a romantic atmosphere. It happened that after skiing, it was snowing, and the open-air hot spring felt particularly good."

"This is a very nice onsen hotel. The dinner and breakfast provided is very good. We stayed for 4 nights, and the dinner are all different. Location is very good as it is walking distance to the train station. They have free shuttle bus to the train station and the snow monkey place as well. All the staff are very friendly. "Location: The hotel is near the ski resort; in fact, the entrance faces the ski area directly, making skiing very convenient. As for transportation, the nearest station is Iiyama Station, about a 10-minute drive from the hotel. It's less convenient if you don't have a car. Rooms: Both Japanese and Western-style rooms are available; clean and standard. Facilities: The onsen (hot spring) on the ground floor is fantastic—very large. After a long day, soaking in the onsen and enjoying a cold drink is the best thing to do. Food: Japanese cuisine, very varied and quite delicious. Overall, a very nice hotel, very Japanese in style. The staff don't all speak English, but they are very polite."

GGuest UserHighly recommended! It is a family hotel, and the proprietress is very friendly. At first, I was a little worried that it would be a bit old since it opened in 1960, but it was not at all. The interior decoration style is very Japanese. The hotel can choose a set meal that includes dinner and breakfast, and the meals are delivered to the room. Personally, I think the meal is just so-so. Dinner is just Sukiyaki pot, a few slices of salmon sushi, and some side dishes. I didn't eat enough. The breakfast variety is very rich, and it is very cute when it is placed in a box. The hotel has a private bath, and you can take a bath while taking a private bath. There is only a place to wash hands in the room. There should be only one bathroom on each floor, which is separate for men and women and very clean. In addition to the hotel private bath, you will also be given a key to open other hot springs in the town, and you cannot take a bath in the hot springs in the town. When checking in, the proprietress will confirm the time of the private bath with you, the next morning, the breakfast time, and the time to send you to the station. The proprietress will carefully ask you where you are going, and then tell you the corresponding departure time, and then work back to the departure time. The only thing to note is that the proprietress and her son don't understand English very well. If you don't understand Japanese, you need a translator. This 2D player thinks the boss lady speaks very clearly in Japanese, which is much easier to understand than the Japanese listening test.

AAmberJWow, what a magnificent place, we really loved our stay here and wished we could have stayed longer. The photos do not do the place justice at all. Our room was spacious and cozy and had a toilet. Our bed was prepared for us when we went out for evening meal. Coffee and tea making facilities were provided. We were privided yutakas for our stay. The hosts are so helpful and friendly. We added breakfast to our stay, and it was superbly prepared in a private dining area for us to enjoy The location was convenient, easy walking to the town and to the ski gondola. We used the private and public ensens at Sumiyosa, both were immaculate with toiletries provided. The public onsen definitely felt hotter than the private ensen, but both were so relaxing. I would love to stay here again.

GGuest UserAmazing Stay at Hotel Iwasuge – A Hidden Gem for Ski & Onsen Lovers! We had an incredible stay at Hotel Iwasuge, which truly became the highlight of our trip. While the interior may be a bit dated, the five-star service and exceptional food more than made up for it. We stayed for two nights on a half-board plan, and every meal was different, delicious, and thoughtfully prepared. The hospitality was outstanding—every staff member was incredibly helpful and made us feel right at home. The location is perfect for skiing, with ski-in, ski-out access. There are two lifts right next to the hotel—one going up and one going down. The slopes nearby offer a mix of red and green tracks, making them ideal for beginners and families. Our kids especially loved the wide, easy slopes. We also rented ski equipment directly from the hotel (though helmets were not included). After a long day on the slopes, the Hoppo Onsen was the perfect way to relax. The onsen itself is so good that we noticed some visitors coming just for the hot spring experience! We have stayed in many four- and five-star hotels, and Hotel Iwasuge is truly one of the best. It may not be as widely known, but it absolutely deserves more recognition. We highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fantastic ski, onsen, and gourmet experience in Shiga Kogen. We can’t wait to return!

AAnonymous UserIt's a 10 mins walk uphill from train station so maybe better to try to contact them for a complimentary pick up. The place is super grand and 2 onsens. A Instagram worthy one that the males and females get to use it at different timings. The shower stuff in the onsen are mediocre though. No fancy facial stuff for women unlike some other onsens at this price range. We had breakfast and dinner for the 2 nights. And well worth it. But you have to follow a fixed timing and we felt a bit rushed but otherwise it was really great and service perfect. We had one the biggest rooms I believe Room 716. Had a sitting area and also a sleeping area. Easily fits 8 persons. We were only 2. In the day they kept the futons and brought it out at night. Towels changed every night. There is a van that goes straight to Mount Yokoteyama ski resort. The receptionist didn't seem to know about it but you could try to Google. It was a complimentary ride to and fro if you bought the lift tickets. Took only like 30 mins to get there. You can get rentals at hotels there.

GGuest UserIt was my first time to experience Japanese tatami, which was very unique and had a beautiful view from the window. The room was large and air-conditioned for heating. People who are afraid of cold may not feel that warm, but it will be much better after taking a hot spring bath. The kelp snacks in the room were delicious, and I bought some when I left. Private hot springs are reserved for a fee. The yukata in the room is relatively simple. The best thing is that the hotel provides station pick-up service, and you can go directly to the Wild Monkey Park without luggage the next morning. After the tour, go to the coffee shop next to the parking lot where you get off and call the hotel to pick you up. The hotel will help you carry your luggage and send you directly from the Wild Monkey Park to Yudanaka Station, which is very convenient for independent travel!

NNiniIt was a very interesting experience. There was no private bathroom, but the location was very good. The hostel provided transportation to the station and to watch the wild monkeys soak in the hot springs. If you take the bus yourself, it is also 100 meters away from the bus station. It is in the core area of the hot spring street, but it is not very convenient to eat around it. After all, it is too remote. If you like to experience the traditional Japanese hot spring street, it is highly recommended to experience it once. Thanks to the owner and the staff for their friendly reception.

TTravelKingOwner is a bit Eccentric and cares more about his daytime dramas. Also has a Dalmatian which he keeps chained in the corner of the living room. Dog is always barking and can be quite a nuisance at times. Also i think the dog urinated as the owner keeps him chained inside all the time. So if you don’t mind the heavy smell of a dog and a unfriendly owner, then look elsewhere. Positives are the onsen is very hot and good. Food is above average and the time they take to make it shows in the details. The rooms are Japanese style and basic. No outlet plugs for charging devices. I would not stay here again.

Very Good
KKheng Hua TanShiga no yu is all about attentive, good hearted, genuine good service. We loved the 70s vibe of the place. It is charming 70s style all the way. The meals provided were wonderful! Great portions, taste and variety! Each meal was different! The onsen was perfect at the end of each muscle weary day from skiing. Dont expect top of the range ski rentals so if that’s important to you, bring your own. But if not, just enjoy the intimate style of the place and the many ski hills to explore starting with the chair lift right outside the hotel’s door!

PPangI am from Hong Kong, but I did not stay in this hotel. Originally I booked Villa Ichinose, but 3 days before departure I received an email from Villa Ichinose saying that due to a problem with the room's machinery, they would arrange to move me to another hotel called Mount Shiga. I stayed in a tatami room in that hotel and there were no chairs. After skiing all day, I had to sit on a mattress on the ground to rest. I need an extra pillow to make my lower back more comfortable. When I opened the door where the pillows and quilts were placed and took out a pillow, I was stunned. The pillow was dirty, full of saliva stains, yellow and moldy. I believe it hadn't been cleaned for at least a month to be so dirty and noticeable. Such sanitary conditions make me very uneasy. I took pictures of the pillow and room key to prove it. My main point is that the person in charge of Villa Ichinose should not have transferred me to a very old and unhygienic hotel. I can't comment on other aspects because I didn't stay there. But the location is very good, right next to the Ichinose bus stop, and the hotel environment is nice (because I was going to this hotel to pick up my snowboard bag, so I went in to take a look).
