This hotel is a good distance from the Kumano Kodo, but is really the only place to stay at this point in the journey. The staff were professional and kind, but did not answer the phone when we called to be picked up, so we ended up having to pay for a taxi ourselves. The onsen baths were also not working, but they gave us a discount for this and drove us to another hotel which provided a great experience. The village around the hotel is a beautiful place for a stroll in the evening.

The first impression as you enter this place does not bode well - the carpet in the reception area is heavily stained and soiled and this is true throughout the accommodation. The place is more like a run down holiday camp than a hotel. Meals are had refectory style at communal tables. The setting of the room was nice looking out onto the river, but the rooms only have toilets and basins, no shower or bath. The furniture in the room was heavily chipped and stained. Really the whole place should be closed down and refurbished, it’s shameful.

Updated review - picked up price list - only 3920 JPY/per for room; 10220-11270 JPY/per for room woth 2 meals. Onsen only is 500 JPY. It is no ewonder many Japanese cone from afar and makecreservations in advance to stay here. Yes rooms are sparsely decoratef but it is a lovely location and wonderful onsen at an unbelievable price

Wonderful Onsen - Beautiful area. This is my husband’s hometown and we go often to visit family. Although the family home is there, we go to the onsen every night to bathe (400 JPY ea) . There are 3 pools (one outdoors where you can gaze at the forest and the river is below). We have also stayed in the guest rooms when we have a big family gathering.- they have both Western and Japanese style rooms. They have wonderful breakfasts that are reasonable priced. Each month there is a farmer’s market. We often hike the area and go to the falls (about a 30 min hike from town). It is so beautiful and peaceful, houses surrounded by rice fields and vegetables grown in everyone’s yard. It is a small farming village and sadly many young people have moved out. Everyone is so friendly and helpful - it is definitely our favorite spot in Japan to visit. In May they stock the river and fishing season begins in July….also a wonderful experience, where the family has fresh fish every day. The town has a shuttle to Shingu 2x/day where you can go to the larger town to shop or eat. Our favorite second hand shop is in Shingu and we often find wonderful gifts there.
