A tricky review to write. Despite plenty of positives, overall I was slightly disappointed and underwhelmed by this hotel. Perhaps my expectations were higher. However, the positives include the important ones: spotlessly clean, good shower, comfortable bed and largely pleasant staff. But for somewhere at this price these are to be expected. Other more personal positives were: an excellent spa, a really good massage from Vio, a top notch burger in the Mayflower restaurant, one of the best made whisky sours I've ever had, and the bedroom had an iron and ironing board. The secret bar is a delight and the Aclief restaurant looked lovely, although we didn't try it. Less good was the checking-in experience. Sitting in chairs that are way too low, I felt I was being interrogated and being asked for information that the hotel already had (as evidenced by endless email confirmations and reminders prior to arrival). The whole process seemed to take ages. What's wrong with ”oh hello Mr Thomas, you're in room 33 and here are your keys. Is there anything else I can help you with?”. Also, I have a personal objection having to book a breakfast time. I'd just spent 4 weeks touring France and Spain and this was by far the most uncomfortable and unnecessary check-in experince I'd had. And this is important - it sets the tone for the rest of the visit. Other negatives included: a failure to meet my pre-booked champagne and chocolates order - rather spoiling the surprise. On being informed, the receptionist didn't apologise - leaving that to the trainiee in her second day who clearly sensed my displeasure - she should go far. The bedroom layout was questionable, and generally just ordinary. All in all the hotel does provide many positives, especially the spa, but I just expected somethiing a little less ordinary, with a bit more atmosphere.
