When I arrived I wasn't greeted by a receptionist but by the maintainance man sitting behind the desk looking very wary. I later noticed this was the standard look for all the staff. Service with a smile is not a known work ethic here. Not a very welcoming look, but he was able to check me in quickly. The lift was out of order so I had to carry my case to the 3rd floor. A sign on the lift door said it would be repaired ASAP. I'd already had an email to say it wouldn't be repaired until September. Upon my climb to my room I noticed the paint had been worn off the banisters, doors and skirting boards. The stair carpet was threadbare in places. Everywhere looked very unkempt and dilapidated. The carpet leading to the bar area was heavily stained. Although the toilet, basin, shower, towels and bed linen were all clean, it appeared the the carpet and window sills hadn't seen a hoover or duster in a very long time. I wrote my autograph in the dust on the windowsill the day I arrived, it was still when I left 4 days later. They do not clean the rooms unless the guest ask for it. I did however, expect the room to have been cleaned properly before I arrived. Breakfast was OK. It was edible. The scrambled eggs and bacon were anaemic and the tomatoes were almost puree'd. It lacked flavour but was edible. You have to ask for fried eggs. I was offered an upgrade of having a bottle of "House Champagne" to be delivered to my room for when I arrived. I paid £35 for this. Got to my room, no Champagne. I went back to reception (where by now there was a woman working) I explained to her I paid for bottle of "champagne" to be in my room but it wasn't there. I was told I had to collect it from the bar myself and it wasn't champagne it was Prosecco. I was like "you're having a laugh, £35 for Prosecco". She smiled and said "it is a big bottle". "For £35 I expect a magnum of Prosecco" I said. When I got the bottle it was 75cl. A standard bottle is 70cl. The only 2 things this hotel has in its favour are the sea views and it's location. To say I was disappointed with my stay would be an understatement. It's highly unlikely I will stay here again and I won't be recommending it either.
