Unfortunately, I was very disappointed with my stay at Hotel Villa Esperia, mainly because of the attitude of the reception staff. In particular, Claudia at reception was extremely rude and unwelcoming throughout our stay. From the moment we arrived, we felt unwelcome. We had hired a car and briefly stopped outside the hotel with our luggage. Instead of simply explaining politely that we were not allowed to stop there, Claudia shouted at us. We had only just arrived and were trying to understand where we could park, so there was absolutely no need to speak to guests in that manner. Unfortunately, this wasn’t an isolated incident. Whenever we approached reception, Claudia often appeared irritated and made even very simple requests feel like an inconvenience. I asked if I could borrow some cutlery for my room and was refused. I asked for proper glasses and was refused. I even asked to borrow a bottle opener for literally five minutes, offering to open the bottle in front of reception and return it immediately, simply so I could enjoy a glass of wine during my 40th birthday holiday. Again, I was made to feel as though I was asking for something completely unreasonable. I understand that hotels have rules and that certain requests may not always be possible. My issue wasn’t simply being told “no” — it was the unnecessarily rude and unfriendly way we were treated. Hospitality is about how you speak to and treat your guests. For a four-star hotel, I expected a completely different level of customer service. Guests should feel welcomed and comfortable asking for basic assistance, not feel like they are bothering the staff every time they approach reception. Taormina itself was absolutely beautiful and I had a wonderful 40th birthday trip, but unfortunately Claudia’s attitude and the overall lack of warmth from reception significantly affected our experience at the hotel. I would not stay at Villa Esperia again and, based on the service we received, I cannot recommend it.
