Brilliant! Duke of Portland Dower house that retains period features. Large rooms with everything you need. Breakfast amazing. Footpath at back goes to Troon. 30 minute walk. We recommend Piersland house hotel which is near the golf club.

My most favorite place to stay in the UK, for many reasons, location, value for money, character and style, and not to mention the welcome and the way you are looked after by Elaine and co, and I must mention that 5 star breakfast, a beautiful relaxing stay once again

There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe Sandhill House. Suffice it to say I would give it 10* if I could. Starting from the prime location and stunning views, to the understated elegance of the house itself and the fact that every detail is thought out (some even before I knew what I needed), to the effortless friendly charm of host and homeowner Elaine; the best b & b experience of my life. I chose the house due to its prime location to all the golf courses. It turned out to be a quiet oceanfront oasis of easy parking, spacious rooms, lovely breakfasts and overlooking holes on the Royal Troon course. The first night Elaine explained to us the Smuggler’s Trail, a wonderful walk from the house, across tbe golf course and down to the beach on the Firth of Clyde. Magical! Obviously I can’t recommend this place any more highly. I know you will fall in love with it just as we did.

Sandhill House was built in the late 1800’s by the Duke of Portland as a home for his mother, the Dower Dutchess of Portland. The sizeable property in its own grounds near Troon, on Scotland’s west coast, became a magnet for other wealthy people who also built in the leafy area. However, the property, which overlooks Royal Troon Golf Course, one of The Open Championship venues, fell on tough times and was repossessed before being lovingly restored by Elaine Warr. It is now used for bed and breakfast accommodation. However, this is no ordinary B&B. It has been a finalist in the South West in the Scottish Hospitality Awards and rates 9.8 on some sites. Absolutely no surprise there having stayed for two nights recently. Yes, some of the old fittings remain, particularly in the bathroom. We had, brass taps, exposed piping and a bath with a marble surround which could make it difficult for some to enter, but we were more than happy to see that as a minor matter. Instead, we enjoyed fluffy towels, two dressing gowns hanging in our adjacent cosy and comfortable bedroom, and the great bed. We slept well. Luxurious furnishings and deep carpets throughout this tastefully-decorated, wood-panelled residence, give a feeling of real class. You can chill here. The spacious lounge area is ideal for a quiet read of watching the large, flat-screen TV, or even listening to the available CD’s Yes, the brick and red sandstone property is adjacent to Prestwick Airport, but the occasional aircraft flying overhead did not bother us. Basically, we loved Sandhill House. Breakfast options include free range eggs from the hens on the property and all food is cooked to order. We even savoured tomatoes grown in the greenhouse in the spacious and well-kept garden. Fruit and cereal options plus fruit juice and croissants were also offered along with piping hot coffee and tea. We’ve stayed in many B&B establishments down the years, and this one is up there. This is B&B in style and well worth a visit. It has on-site parking. Wi-fi proved slow, but it did the job, and it is free. The property is non-smoking throughout and one blurb described this as being “exceptional”. It was.

Firstly...what a beautiful place, absolutely stunning. We only stayed 1 night before a flight from Prestwick but really wish we could have stayed longer (we will be back!) From the very start of booking process, Elaine was helpful and accommodating as things changed with our booking. Can we leave the car there while on holiday? - No problem. One of our daughters friends is now coming, can we increase the number staying? - no problem, we'll pop another bed in the room for you. Our flight is quite early, would it be possible to get a light breakfast before we leave? No problem, I'll be up and get some cereal/toast/coffee etc. sorted for you. Is it possible to get a transfer to airport? - no problem, we can recommend a local firm who are polite and reliable. Just everything about the place is amazing and as said, our only regret is that we couldn't have stayed longer, it was the perfect start to our holiday. Thankyou Elaine and Peter

A beautifully restored Edwardian House close to golf course and beach. We only stayed one night as hubby had a meeting in nearby Troon. The room was modern with everything you needed for a nights stay. The guests sitting room was beautiful with views over the gardens. Due to time of year with limited daylight we were unable to explore the lovely gardens which surrounded the house. However we spotted the alpaca and pony as well as a heron looking for food out of the windows. Elaine proved a superb breakfast in the morning.

From the moment you approach Sandhill House from the drive you can see the love that is put into this beautiful house. The grounds are lovely and very well cared for. We were given a warm welcome by Elaine and felt instantly at home. We had a family room which was very clean, spacious and the beds were luxurious and very comfortable. They have thought of everything you may need and have put this into the room. Loved the water bottles, glasses and crockery. Plenty of tea, coffee etc. We were celebrating a 60th birthday and Elaine had very kindly decorated the room with the banner and balloons we supplied. This was a lovely touch. The view from this room is stunning. We were looking forward to breakfast and Sandhill didn’t disappoint. The dining room is very welcoming with the aroma of warm croissants and very relaxing background music. The produce is excellent and there is something for everyone on the menu. Thank you for a very memorable stay and we are looking forward to returning.

Beautiful building, in beautiful grounds with stunning rooms and great breakfast too! Booked an overnight stay for friend and myself as we were attending a wedding nearby. We'd booked a twin room, but actually got almost a small apartment. A huge room with seating area, dining area, a double bed, a single bed, a second bedroom fitted out as a child's room with single bed and a large bathroom with full bath and shower. Everything throughout was pristine. Beds were extremely comfortable and well appointed. Small touches like water carafes, tissue boxes, charging ports on the bedside tables and the little dressing table with a light up mirror for make-up, all just added that extra little touch of thoughtfulness. Breakfast in the lovely dining room had loads of choices and both my scrambled egg with smoked salmon and my friend's full breakfast were very generous and perfectly cooked and presented. The owner and staff were wonderfully warm and welcoming; another bonus! The price for our midweek stay was, I would say, remarkably reasonable and much cheaper than the quality of this lovely B & B would suggest
