Such a quaint, old hotel in the middle of nowhere! It was a nice change from chain hotels and dirty motels. The room was large and clean. The breakfast was deliciously homecooked and plentiful. Beds were comfy. Staff was friendly and accommodating. We’ll be back!

This was the most interesting and lovely hotel I've ever stayed in and the staff was wonderful to talk to. What you're looking for will determine what you'll finally make of this place. As for me, I saw the beauty in the history and continuity of the building and its business. It's a rare gem that must be experienced. Where I'm from there are many Victorian homes that have been converted to bed & breakfasts. many have gone way over the top to create a pampered experience. It winds up feeling a little fake. Romantic and comfy, but not authentic. This place keeps its original Western heritage and provides a nice upscale approach to a better hotel experience. Visually, everywhere you look there's an interesting story and don't let this go past you. Take the time needed here to soak it all in. Don't just check in and check out like usual. Breakfast is served on decent china, not styrofoam and paper. The food can be made to order and the morning coffee is wonderful. Take a bunch of pictures!

Nice looking historic hotel in the middle of nowhere. Room nice though beds a bit narrow. Restaurant only open end of week so we missed that and there aren't many options in Clayton. Breakfast very limited. Twice fire alarm went off and all guests had to evacuate. Somebody said it had been happening for a month. Strange how in Clayton you can install a new fire alarm without having it tested and certified by the local fire dp next door. Seemed strange. Receptionist ok but not very welcoming.

Hotel Eklund is a registered Cultural property, the structure was built in 1892. It is a small, quaint hotel full of charm & character. It is owned by Keith & Jeannette and they CLEARLY Take great care in making sure everything is perfect (Keith also happened to be tending the bar on our visit.) Our small historic room was spotless & just perfect. We ate at the hotel - our appetizer, salad, salmon, wine & and couple beers were delicious and extremely reasonable (under $50!) DEFINITELY have dinner there if you are fortunate enough to stay & enjoy this bit of Americana! We drive from TX to CO on occasion & a friend recommended stopping & staying here- it’s @7hrs from DFW - SO glad we did! We will now drive to Clayton (instead of Amarillo) when heading to Colorado!

Highly recommend this beautiful hotel built in the 1880s to anyone traveling through the New Mexican, Texas, or Oklahoman panhandle. This hotel has been restored but the owner says much of the hotel is original. Beautiful lobby, bar, and dining room. The rooms are large and comfortable. Nice bathrooms and very clean, and the whole hotel is well cared for. Desk clerks are always exceptionally nice and knowledgeable. Prices are very reasonable. I’ve stayed here twice. Will be forgoing the overpriced boring chain hotels of nearby Dalhart and Dumas from now on. Got to say as well: a food truck about a half mile from the hotel isn’t on TripAdvisor but Senior Tacos is always busy with travelers and locals and has great Mexican plates.

For a old building the owners have done a great job of restoration with some modern touches that do not take away from the period style. The beds were comfortable, the room spacious, the TV selection limited (but frankly I didn't care.), Wi-Fi quick. The price is about the same as the chain hotels in the town. I would have liked more water pressure in the shower but you are out in the middle of nowhere with a water tower. The breakfast, although limited, is free and buffet style. Everything we had was tasty. I understand the second story rooms that face the street have balconies. It's noisy during the day but quiets down at night. We would stay here again.

If you're looking for an accurate historic hotel, this is a great stay. Rooms are pristine, sheets crisp, ample parking. The bathroom even had historic features and Penny tile that looked original. I was however disappointed by the FREE breakfast that came with it. The girl serving breakfast didn't seem to appreciate mornings and the breakfast selections were sparce. The crust-less quiche was very good, but a very small portion. My hubby ordered the breakfast burrito that was moderate. Coffee bar had no liquid creamer. Was not impressed with the breakfast at all.

Extremely warm, caring service. The room was very clean and nice - especially for the price! So much history at this historic hotel. Very much worth a stop. Be sure to eat at the hotel restaurant. The food is incredible. Loved my whole stay, and will definitely come back!
