Fredriksborg Hotell & Restaurang

This is a review of the restaurant. We were staying in an Air BnB in the vicinity and visited here 3 times - once for breakfast, once for a music concert, and once for dinner. All of our experiences were lovely. The breakfast is not massive like the larger Swedish hotels but has plenty of variety of options for anyone. I enjoyed the fresh fruit. Likewise dinner did not have a giant menu, only 5 or 6 entrees but we were delighted with our meals. I had the fish - I think it was steelhead trout but I’m not sure of the translation. It was cooked perfectly and served with vegetables that were cooked just right too. The server was timely, pleasant, and happily translated the menu from Swedish into English. (She wasn’t sure of the English fish name but I had the same named fish elsewhere in Sweden so I knew what to expect). The music concert was fabulous, with a New Orleans jazz band that definitely was the real deal. We had drinks outside where the band played under a tent that had been used for a wedding the night before. It was one of the most fun nights we had of our trip. Before or after eating you can hike around the old fort, read the historical markers and walk down the cliff to the water. It’s on the cruise ship route so you can also watch giant ships gliding by (because they hardly make any noise) at close range. The grounds are well kept. It was not crowded at any of our visits. I think it is far enough out from the city to feel like a special destination kind of place. We really enjoyed having Frederiksborg close by our archipelago rental house and would love to return.

There is simply no hotel like the Fredricksborg. If you’re looking for high-concept luxury, this is not the place for you; the accommodations are modest, almost Spartan. But the setting is like almost no other, overlooking a painfully picturesque narrow strait flanked by medieval forts (one of which the hotel manages, and they’ll tour you through) that protect the historically strategic entrance to Stockholm harbor. About once per hour, a massive white Baltic ferry will pass below you and fill your field of vision, almost close enough to touch. There’s plenty of patio space below the hotel from which to enjoy this stunning scenery, and if you’re feeling flush, book the Anna-Lise room, which has the best view in the house. The staff is incomparably friendly and helpful, the breakfast excellent, and the dinner menu, although limited, is first rate. We’re coming back, and hope the word about this gem doesn’t get spread too widely around.

Stunning views and excellent views. We always come back to this gorgeous place for unparalleled views across the water, and for a cozy drink and dinner. The food is excellent and the staff very friendly. The tour of Fredriksborg Fortress by the owner was just mind-blowing. He is so knowledgeable and friendly, and that definitely added to an already fantastic afternoon at this lovely place. Easy to reach from Vaxholm by car via the Vaxholm-Rindö and Rindö-Varmdö ferries.
