Luckily we only booked one night. Filthy stained carpet in freezing cold room, no headboard, only two pillows (there were two more in the wardrobe but they had no covers). Electrics hazardous. Some attempt had been made to spruce up the bathroom but unfortunately it was still reminiscent of something you would expect to have seen in a 1960's institution. The shower head was broken and the sink was cracked! On check-out we tried to report the broken shower but there was just one member of staff and she just shook her head and said 'no speak English'. The bar area was just sad and cold - even the staff had coats on! This could be a very lovely hotel but it desperately needs a large injection of capital and someone running it who cares.

Visited with 7 friends for a Friday evening in the pub. Arrived at 8pm to be told by the manager that the pub would close at 9pm, as takings had been only £82 all day. The manager’s young kids were running around the bar and had taken over a chair/table with colouring books. We were told if we kept spending then they might stay open to 10pm. We had a pint of Rebellion IPA, but it was flat. I guess that’s what happens when you are on a customer service death spiral - Poorly kept beer - Kids running about at 8pm on Friday - Closing at 9pm The only local drinker decided to leave at 8.30pm. We left just after. I will not return until a publican runs this once great pub to the standard it deserves.

I find it rather difficult to be as critical as I want to be without in some way suggesting that the staff were culpable for our viewpoint. This is not the case as they performed well under appalling control mechanisms from absentee owners which defy the normal rules of hospitality. In the past when using the G & D under previous ownership the stay was always memorable for positive reasons. This 3 night stay reversed that experience in extreme ways. I will not list all our complaints as there is not enough time in the day but a flavour is as follows. Very dirty and tired interior. Room with poor shower facility and dangerous electrical sockets et al. The food was severely over priced for the volume and quality. In all my hotel stays across the world I have never been charged for a coffee top up at breakfast !!! Even the removal of large amounts of the breakfast offer still accrued the same charge. No cereals, no yoghurts at anytime. Since leaving I have in my usual forensic way looked at the ownership who are absentees controlling this Inn by email and not allowing staff to make any on the spot decisions for fear of job continuity and non payment. The owners who are the Virani family have a similar poor hotel near Stoke attracting the same negative comments and a look into Companies House of their past and current dealings is rather interesting in the least. I also have never seen the Above the Door Licensing Details purposely covered by a sign saying Reception and I imagine that a check by the authorities would attract a warning. Having been born in West Wycombe I am rather distraught by what has been allowed to happen and the whole village seems up in arms at the state of this hotel. Very sad indeed for somewhere with excellent potential and can only be salvaged by new ownership of people who care and respect British history and standards,

Appalling experience from beginning to end...stayed to be nearer Henley Regatta...arrived to no staff despite being told the porter would give us a key. Saw a piece of paper with our name on it so had to take the key from the box & let ourselves in. The bed was very soft. Water boiler kept us awake all night. No furniture in the room to do my hair or place things. Very poor quality of decor/tired. In the morning there was no water from the shower...& Started washing my hair in sink...then it was scalding as no cold water! Staff showed us into another dirty bedroom to use a shower. Saying "too many people were having a shower at the same time!". Clearly a regular problem. No apology & on emailing for some money back no response. Worst hotel we have ever stayed in for every reason!

first time at this hotel. looks lovely from the outside, inside could do with some tlc. staff friendly , and bed was comfy. bring earplugs as rooms overlooking the high street are very noisy in the morning from passing traffic.Drinks were way too expensive, London prices !

The staff were friendly enough but spent most of the time outside smoking or making personal phone calls. Rooms were shabby and in real need of a good clean and spruce up. Broken tiles in the bathroom, no toilet paper etc. supper was clearly done in the microwave with ultra processed sausages served on a pool of watery mash, flooded with packet gravy… not a veg in sight. A shame as there is a fab butchers less than 5 minutes away. Bed was clean and comfy thank goodness. Won’t be going back in a hurry!

Have visited this pub a few times over the last few years whilst camping nearby. The drinks we ordered were fine and reasonable priced but the food was another story. £16 pounds for a lasagne which looked like it had come straight out of a packet and when combined with an order of lukewarm chips was £20. The sandwich and chips were more reasonable at £8 but again the chips didn't seem like they were fresh out of the frier. The staff were perfectly pleasant, but the pub garden seemed to have lost some of its ambience - especially as it was so quiet on a prime sunny Saturday during the Easter break. It's a shame as the pub could be so lovely.
