Thought we would try the King Alfred. Menu looked okay and it has a good reputation. Very disappointed the food was average, at best, and the staff were offish and unwelcoming. Food and beer prices were high, but we did not receive the service that went with the prices. We shall not return.

A really lovely old pub in a fabulous location. A quiet and pretty residential area 10 mins walk from city centre. The pub has great character and a lovely garden. We didn’t eat there but the food looked very nice and the pub was always busy with diners. Staff were all super friendly. Unfortunately the room wasn’t very nice. Too much furniture crammed in a small space. There was only a bedside table on one side. The bathroom smelled damp. The toilet didn’t flush well and the sink tap leaked. In the middle of the first night, the loo roll ran out and there wasn’t a spare. Also the shower drain was badly blocked. We mentioned the loo roll and the shower drain to the house keeper in the morning and she was very apologetic and rectified them straight away. Tea & coffee & kettle in the room - and a jug of fresh milk in the fridge which was lovely!! But two tiny old teacups were not ideal for making coffee in. A couple of mugs would have been better. Other rooms might be nicer. The hotel did let me know after I had booked that they had allocated me a small room (room 1). I would probably have another go at staying here - but definitely not in room 1.

Myself and a group of friends stayed here for an annual get together after we chose Winchester as our location for 2025. This is just such a lovely pub in so many ways. A proper traditional British pub with a charm and warmth to it that made me sad to leave and envious it wasn't on my doorstep back home! It has such a cosy, welcoming homely feel to it helped by the vintage decor, mismatched furniture and warm lighting that just made you want to stay there all night. Our group was made to feel welcome from the moment we checked in. The rooms are lovely and are thoughtfully decord with a consistent theme matching the downstairs pub interior. Again, cosy and homely. There is a fantastic offering of ales (as well as an excellent pint of Guinness) and the food we had was excellent too. Just make sure you book a table as unsurprisingly it was a popular place with the locals who were all so friendly to us too. Thank you to everyone at the King Alfred for welcoming us and for your hospitality throughout the weekend stay. You have an absolutely fantastic pub/business which you should be really proud of.

What a brilliant place. Great location in a quiet leafy area of the city but still only a gentle 15 minutes stroll to the centre. Easy free parking a big bonus too. The King Alfred itself is the quintessential English town pub at its very best. Really warm welcome from the landlady and all staff happy and friendly. Room perfect with a very comfortable bed and superb shower. All in all an excellent find and outstanding value for money. I have little doubt we shall be back.

Visited and stayed one night to visit Christmas markets, were greeted and accommodated with ease, room cosy, and just perfect… Had booked a table for evening meal, which was amazing…. Staff and food, couldn’t ask for more! Will visit again. Breakfast absolutely perfect for what we needed. Nice situation quiet area walking distance of town centre… Only negative noisy guests early hours.

The pub was v cold. There was possibly an issue with the heating/boiler, which may be unavoidable, but we felt we should have been warned on a chilly winter day. Had to wear coats, not conducive to a relaxed lunch. Rather disappointing menu - too many sandwiches

Oh dear. This was a regular pub we used to visit when the family were all together, so not visited since 2013. It has been ruined by present landlord/landlady. They no longer sell English real ale, but nasty American style stuff. The only good thing on our visit was our food. The Sunday roast was good. The service was a bit slow. Overall we would never return.

This pub with rooms above is a great place to stay. Walking distance into the town centre. The rooms are well decorated and very comfortable. I have stayed here 2 years in a row when we go to a festival in the fields literally opposite the pub. The staff are very friendly. Food a lovely but a bit pricy and the drinks are good pub prices. I will definitely be staying here again.
