Zhang Mansion

Hidden deep within an alleyway, this centuries-old house, Zhang Gongguan, feels like stepping into another time the moment you push open its doors. Inside, you'll find intricately carved wooden ceilings, a tranquil courtyard with banana trees. My child and I explored every nook and cranny, upstairs and down. We sat in the garden, feeling completely at ease and immersed, with a couple of well-behaved cats and dogs peacefully napping beside us, as if time itself had slowed down. Zhang Gongguan is like a mini-museum. The ambiance you get from the few open courtyards in Hongcun, you can experience 80-90% of it right here at Zhang Gongguan, and you even get to stay the night! The owner picked us up at the village entrance, and we ordered some steaming hot Huizhou dishes, which tasted authentic and delicious. It's just a few minutes' walk to Nanhu Lake and other attractions, yet it's free from the hustle and bustle of the main street. Strolling around in the early morning and evening, sitting by the lake in peace before most tourists arrive, allows you to take in all the beautiful scenery. I took so many stunning photos! Staying at Zhang Gongguan offers a truly unique experience in Hongcun. I dare say it's one of the most unforgettable guesthouses I'll ever stay in.

I stayed here during the May Day holiday. It's located within Hongcun, offering a peaceful retreat from the bustling village. Both the indoor and outdoor environments have a great atmosphere and are very comfortable. You can also have meals at the guesthouse, which isn't noisy at all and the food tastes really good.

The rooms are clean and well-maintained, and the facilities are excellent. The food is delicious too! Most importantly, the staff are all incredibly nice, warm, and attentive. They helped us with our luggage, and even offered pick-up and drop-off services to and from the scenic area. A special shout-out to the beautiful lady manager – she was super enthusiastic and truly touched our hearts. Oh, and there's also a very cute little black dog! I really hope this wonderful guesthouse continues to thrive. We'll definitely be back next time we visit Hongcun!

The hotel staff had a decent attitude. We had lunch there, consisting of half a chicken soup, stir-fried bamboo shoots, river shrimp, and braised pork ribs, which came to 406 RMB. I felt the price was a bit high, but I was in a hurry to catch my train and forgot to check the menu. The room had a strong odor, probably a musty smell from the old building.

The room was very clean and the courtyard was beautifully maintained. We were also informed beforehand about the noise issues, which are common in older buildings.
