Safestay York Micklegate

Service and location 10! However, the bathroom in my room was tiny and low, even though the room itself was very spacious. I had to sit sideways on the toilet because there wasn't enough legroom, and the shower head hit me in the chest. The mattress was super thin; you could feel all the metal springs.

This hostel, Safestay York Micklegate, is a converted aristocratic mansion with over 200 years of history. There's no elevator, and cooking facilities aren't available. The bathrooms are a combined shower and toilet, a bit small, and I'm not sure why they couldn't have been designed larger.

The hostel is a 10-minute walk from the train station. There's no elevator, so you have to take the stairs. The room has a private bathroom, but it's very small, and there are no common bathrooms on the floor. Also, the top bunk doesn't have a curtain. The main issue is the mattress, which is too soft and uncomfortable to sleep on. It's suitable for a short stay.

It's about a 5-7 minute walk from the train station, very close. The room was clean. It had curtains, a private toilet and shower (though small), and a metal rack for luggage (you'll need to bring your own lock). There's no kitchen, but you can bring outside food to eat here. For hot water, you need to go to the front desk (so for someone like me who drinks a lot, it was a bit awkward to keep asking for hot water frequently). Laundry is £3, drying is £3, and laundry detergent is £1.

This was my first hostel experience. The reception staff were all very kind and polite. I was a bit nervous since it was my first time at a hostel, but I felt much more at ease after checking in! 😮💨

This is a very unique hostel, converted from a large house. The entrance looks just like a private residence, and the interior design is quite special. You can easily walk around York from here, making it excellent value for money. My only minor complaints are that the upper bunk beds don't have charging sockets or curtains, which can be a bit inconvenient, but for the price, I can accept it. The lower bunks are much better. I met some lovely French friends here. It's a great choice for backpackers in York.
