Shanxi丨The filming location of Black Myth: Wukong that I visited

Shanxi丨The filming location of Black Myth: Wukong that I visited

Shanxi truly deserves the title of "Look at Shanxi for above-ground cultural relics." This place is simply a paradise for ancient architecture, and this was also my first wonderful journey focused on exploring ancient buildings. Day1⃣️: Guangzhou➡️Taiyuan➡️Datong➡️Hotel➡️Datong Ancient City➡️Oriental Noodles➡️Hotel When I arrived in Datong, it was already 2-3 PM. Originally, I had meticulously planned a full itinerary of attractions to visit, but due to time constraints, I only managed to visit three spots: Huayan Temple, Shanhua Temple, and Datong Ancient City Wall. Even with just these three places, I was deeply impressed and felt the unique charm of Shanxi's ancient architecture. In Huayan Temple, the high-up chiwen (a mythical creature), with its exquisite design, seemed ready to soar into the sky; the murals inside the temple were breathtaking, with delicate brushstrokes, vibrant colors, and vivid images, as if telling ancient and mysterious stories. The statues of the Four Heavenly Kings in Shanhua Temple were imposing and awe-inspiring, while the Twenty-Four Heavenly Deities had varied postures and expressions, each seemingly possessing its own soul and thoughts. Leaving Shanhua Temple and stepping onto the Datong Ancient City Wall, this ancient wall felt like an old man who had seen much of life, quietly telling me about its past glory and splendor. The sunset cast a golden hue on the wall, adding to its historical weight. Day2⃣️: Hotel➡️Tour Group (Hengshan - Hanging Temple - Yingxian Wooden Pagoda)➡️Datong Ancient City Wall➡️Kaige Restaurant➡️Hotel Given that today's attractions were quite scattered, I chose to join a tour group for convenience and to save time. The first stop was Hengshan. The scenery of Hengshan was magnificent and enchanting. Here, you can choose to take a shuttle bus to one-third of the mountain or take a cable car directly to the halfway point. However, the overall height of Hengshan is manageable for tourists with some physical strength, and climbing it is not difficult. Moreover, the one-way fare for the shuttle bus is only 13 yuan, while the cable car costs 70 yuan, making the shuttle bus a more cost-effective option. The second stop was the famous Hanging Temple. Seeing it with my own eyes, I was amazed by its unique architectural style and perilous location. This temple, embedded in the cliff, is like a dazzling pearl, leaving people in awe. Unfortunately, there were too many visitors queuing to ascend the temple that day, and to avoid delaying the subsequent itinerary, I could only admire this magical temple from the foot of the mountain. Even so, its spectacular sight was enough to leave a lasting impression. The third stop was the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, one of the most anticipated attractions of this trip. When it appeared before me, the excitement was indescribable. The Yingxian Wooden Pagoda is the tallest and oldest existing pure wooden structure in the world. Its intricate structure and long history made me deeply admire the wisdom and craftsmanship of ancient artisans. However, it is regrettable that some main structures were dismantled early on, causing the pagoda to tilt. Seeing this, I couldn't help but feel worried and regretful, sincerely hoping that effective methods can be found soon to save this precious historical treasure. After a day of rich itinerary, we returned to the Datong Ancient City Wall. Since I didn't go up the wall the previous day due to time constraints, I made up for it today. When I climbed the wall and overlooked the scenery inside and outside the city, I was filled with emotions. But to be honest, the view from the wall was relatively ordinary, without many stunning sights. So, if you plan to go up and take a look, the inside is filled with juicy meat fillings, and taking a bite, the juice bursts out, leaving a lingering taste in your mouth. That wonderful taste still makes me reminisce, and I highly recommend it to every food lover. After enjoying breakfast, I eagerly went to the Yungang Grottoes. This grotto was initially excavated by the Northern Wei royal family and has undergone repairs and additions over various dynasties. Its grand scale, exquisite Buddha statues, and splendid murals make it feel like an art palace. Each Buddha statue is lifelike, with a compassionate smile, seemingly comforting people's hearts; each mural is colorful, vividly depicting the social life and religious beliefs of the time. Here, I deeply felt the endless charm of ancient art and was filled with respect for the exquisite skills and selfless dedication of ancient artisans. After leaving the Yungang Grottoes, I visited the Datong Museum. There, I further understood the historical changes and cultural heritage of Datong. The precious relics and detailed introductions gave me a deeper understanding and appreciation of this city. After finishing the Datong itinerary, I embarked on a journey to Pingyao. Day4⃣️: Hotel➡️Pingyao Ancient City➡️Taiyuan➡️May Day Square➡️Shanxi Hotel➡️Hotel In Pingyao Ancient City, I spent half a day slowly wandering through the streets and alleys of the ancient city. Every street and courtyard here exudes a strong historical atmosphere, as if time has stood still. The ancient city walls, quaint shops, and traditional courtyard houses all tell of the city's past prosperity and glory. In the evening, I arrived in Taiyuan. Under the night, Taiyuan was brightly lit and bustling. I went to May Day Square, where people were coming and going, full of life. Then, I was attracted by a building, the Shanxi Hotel, which was magnificently decorated and had an antique style. Its exquisite architectural style and unique decorations made me feel like I had traveled back in time. Day5⃣️: Hotel➡️Shanxi Museum➡️Guangzhou On the last day in Shanxi, I chose to visit the Shanxi Museum. This place is like a huge historical treasure trove, housing many exquisite bronzes, ceramics, paintings, and other artifacts. Each artifact carries a piece of history and tells a story. Here, I also saw detailed introductions about the ancient buildings I visited in the past few days, giving me a deeper understanding and appreciation of them. This trip to Shanxi was very rewarding. Before setting off to Shanxi, I watched many related documentaries. When I stood in front of the buildings and artifacts that appeared in the documentaries, the excitement and thrill in my heart were indescribable. I recommend the documentary "Humanistic Tsinghua" on Bilibili, which provided me with a wealth of knowledge and background information for my trip, allowing me to better appreciate and understand the history and culture of Shanxi.

The Mengshan Giant Buddha is 162 years older than the Leshan Giant Buddha!

The Mengshan Giant Buddha is 162 years older than the Leshan Giant Buddha!

The Mengshan Giant Buddha is located in the Mengshan Scenic Area in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province. The scenic area covers an area of about 8 square kilometers, and the main peak is 1,325 meters above sea level. From a distance, the giant Buddha is like the couplet at the entrance of the mountain: "The mountain is a Buddha, and the Buddha is a mountain." The Mengshan Giant Buddha is a 63-meter-high seated Shakyamuni Buddha statue carved in the second year of the Tianbao period of the Northern Qi Dynasty, making it the earliest cliff-carved Buddha statue with a definite date, 162 years older than the famous Leshan Giant Buddha. The Mengshan Giant Buddha was carved in the second year of the Tianbao period of the Northern Qi Dynasty, which is 551 AD. The giant Buddha faces south, with its back to the mountain and its face to the water, with the Azure Dragon on the left and the White Tiger on the right, in an excellent position. The giant Buddha has been prosperous for more than 800 years since it was carved. In the eyes of the people, the giant Buddha is very spiritual, and in the eyes of the royal family and nobles, it is like a temple that protects the country. Because of this, many royal nobles in history have formed an indissoluble bond with the giant Buddha. However, at the end of the Yuan Dynasty, the war raged, and Mengshan fell into a sea of fire. The head of the giant Buddha fell off due to the fire, and the body was buried. It was buried for more than 600 years. It was not until the 1980s that Wang Jianni, an elderly man, confirmed that the Mengshan Giant Buddha was the site of the former Xishan Giant Buddha after many field investigations during a place name survey. After clearing the surrounding mud, stone, and sand, the body of the Buddha was revealed. Later, in 2007-2008, the head of the Buddha was restored according to the characteristics of the Northern Qi Buddha sculpture. The head of the Buddha was lifted from the mountain and cast in place. Since then, the giant Buddha, which had disappeared for more than 600 years, reappeared in the world. The Buddha's hands are in the meditation seal, and his legs are crossed. His expression is solemn and calm, with a sense of elegance in his strength, determination in his contemplation, and great compassion in his solemnity, which is awe-inspiring. As one of the earliest large stone Buddha statues in the world, the Mengshan Giant Buddha shows the majestic style of Northern Qi Buddhist statues. Its carving skills are exquisite, the facial expression of the Buddha statue is kind and solemn, the clothing lines are smooth and natural, the shoulders are flat and wide, the chest is thick, and the body is strong, showing unique artistic charm.

On the Road, Heart at Mehood (Taiyuan Jinyang Street Branch)

On the Road, Heart at Mehood (Taiyuan Jinyang Street Branch)

Choosing the right hotel during a trip is like finding a warm harbor. My stay at Mehood Hotel exceeded my expectations with its warmth. Mehood Hotel is located at Exit A of Jinyang Street Metro Station, surrounded by a bustling commercial area with office buildings, North America N1, Guojin Center, and Maternity and Child Hospital. It's also convenient to go to the Red Lantern Stadium for concerts, with a shuttle bus from Longxing Street Metro Station directly to the south gate of the stadium. The moment I stepped into the hotel lobby, I was captivated by its elegant and grand decor. Soft lighting from simple spotlights and exquisite decorative items everywhere showcased quality and taste. The front desk staff were warm and professional, efficiently handling check-in procedures with sincere smiles, making me feel like a spring breeze. There was also a thoughtful butler offering tea, towels, and luggage assistance, providing super nice service. The room was spacious and bright, arranged to be cozy and comfortable. The soft bed felt like a cloud, making one fall into a sweet dream as soon as they lay down. The family room was larger than usual, with a 2m*2m bed and a 1*1.3m bed. The room's facilities were comprehensive, from high-speed stable wireless network to thoughtfully prepared toiletries, every detail was meticulously considered. It takes about 20 minutes from Taiyuan South Station to the hotel, and around 25 minutes during peak hours. From Wusu Airport to the hotel, it takes about 30 minutes. As for the restaurant, breakfast is on the first floor, with a standard Chinese-style breakfast that tastes very good, including Taiyuan's local specialty, Da Lu Mian. The restaurant offers free self-service afternoon tea during the day, where you can leisurely enjoy tea and fruits in the afternoon, feeling the pleasant time. There's also a late-night bowl of noodles available at 10 PM, satisfying your cravings. The hotel's pricing and positioning are quite reasonable. During holidays, the hotel offers discounts, with family rooms around 380 RMB and other room types around 300 RMB. It's super worth it, with free bottled water on every floor, free fruit snacks at the front desk, and different treats every day. Moreover, the hotel's service is top-notch. The staff always appear promptly when needed, whether it's for travel information or solving unexpected issues, they provide patient and detailed assistance. My stay at Mehood Hotel made me truly feel what it means to be a valued guest. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to my friends and look forward to my next visit to experience this warmth and beauty again.

Shuangta Temple, Taiyuan, Shanxi | "Twin Towers Soaring into the Sky"

Shuangta Temple, Taiyuan, Shanxi | "Twin Towers Soaring into the Sky"

📍 Shuangta Park is located in Yingze District, Taiyuan. The park is free to enter, but you need to buy a ticket to visit Yongzuo Temple. 👉Yongzuo Temple, also known as Shuangta Temple, is a national key cultural relic protection unit. It was built during the Wanli period of the Ming dynasty. The Twin Towers Soaring into the Sky is one of the eight ancient scenic spots of Taiyuan. It is now the Taiyuan Shuangta Museum. 🌟The temple consists of two parts: the pagoda courtyard and the temple. 🌟The pagoda courtyard has two existing pagodas: Wenfeng Pagoda and Xuanwen Pagoda. The twin pagodas are made of brick and imitate wooden structures. 📍The east pagoda is Wenfeng Pagoda, built in the 27th year of the Wanli period of the Ming dynasty. It is a product of Taoist culture and was built to make up for the lack of feng shui at that time. 📍The west pagoda is a Buddhist stupa, built in the 39th year of the Wanli period of the Ming dynasty. The center of the pagoda is hollow, and the stairs are between the outer and inner walls. You can climb up the stairs, which are narrow and dimly lit, but easy to climb. You can only climb up to the 11th floor. Each floor of the pagoda has four doors leading to the eaves, where you can enjoy the distant view. Climbing the pagoda is free. 🌟The temple has existing buildings such as the Mahavira Hall, the Three Saints Pavilion, the Peony Garden, and the Baoxian Hall. 📍The Mahavira Hall is two stories high. The lower floor has five rooms and is made of brick and imitates wooden structures. It has no beams and is also called the Beamless Hall. The second floor is the Three Saints Pavilion with three rooms, which was previously called the Guanyin Hall. 📍The garden has a peony from the Ming dynasty called Zixiaxian, which is over 400 years old. Its trunk is old, its branches and leaves are lush, its flowers are numerous, its petals are large, and its fragrance is strong and purple. It is called Zixiaxian, which is a very beautiful name. Unfortunately, I did not visit during the blooming season. The staff said that the peonies bloom here around early May every year. 📍In Baoxian Hall, you can admire the calligraphy of many masters, such as Yan Zhenqing, Liu Gongquan, Huang Tingjian, Wang Xianzhi, and Zhao Mengfu. 📍Address: No. 8, Shuangta South Lane, Yingze District, Taiyuan, Shanxi 🎫Tickets: Peak season: CNY 30 (April 1–October 31) Off-peak season: CNY 20 (November 1–March 31) 🕐Opening hours: 8:30 am–5:30 pm 🚗Transportation: Take bus 820 to the intersection of Shuangta North Road and Yongzuo West Street, or bus 812 to the intersection of Shuangta South Road and Shuangta North Lane. Tianlongshan Grottoes! (579)

Tianlongshan Grottoes! (579)

Tianlongshan Grottoes are located in Jinyuan District, Taiyuan City. They were first excavated during the Northern Wei Dynasty and currently have 25 caves, which are distributed along the cliffs of the east and west peaks. The superb carving techniques of Tianlongshan Grottoes, the distinctive front porch and back chamber caves, especially the round sculptures, combine the elegance of Indian 🇮🇳 Buddha statues with the inherent fresh rhythm 🎶 and lines of traditional Chinese 🇨🇳 carving. They have had a profound impact on Chinese 🇨🇳 Buddhist statues! However, due to wars or theft, most of the cave heads in Tianlongshan Grottoes have been almost completely stolen, and some exquisite statues have even been entirely stolen and transported abroad. In 2001, it was announced by the State Council as the fifth batch of national key cultural relics protection units! In February 2021, a stolen Buddha head returned after a hundred years, attracting global 🌍 attention! In 2023, it was successfully selected as one of the first 32 cultural memory projects in Shanxi Province! It is a national AAAA-level scenic spot!

Famous tourist spot in Taiyuan! Shuangta Temple.

I visited Yongzuo Temple, also known as Shuangta Temple. Built in 1599, it is an important cultural heritage and the only brick-built temple in the country. It is famous as China's Twin Towers, and you can also enter the towers. The peonies are said to be beautiful, but in early March, the trees were bare. I would like to come again in a better season. The back of the ticket was a cute postcard. You can purchase it by showing your passport. It is also close to the high-speed rail station.

The filming location of Black Myth: Wukong is in Shanxi!

Last year, I planned a trip to visit ancient buildings as a designer, and checked in at the following classic ancient buildings in Shanxi: Taiyuan: Jinci Temple, Qingyuan Confucian Temple, Tianlong Temple, Dou Dafu Temple, Shuangta Temple, Chunyang Palace Xinzhou: Drum Tower, Daizhou Confucian Temple, Foguang Temple, Nanchan Temple, Yanqing Temple, Hongfu Temple, Princess Temple, Yanshan Temple Datong: Yungang Grottoes, Huayan Temple, Shanhua Temple, Hanging Temple, Yong'an Temple, Yuanjue Temple Lvliang: Taifu Temple Shuozhou: Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, Chongfu Temple, Jingtusi Temple Jinzhong: Pingyao Ancient City, Houtu Temple, Zishou Temple, Zhenguo Temple, Shuanglin Temple, Jingxin Temple Ruicheng: Yongle Palace The twenty-day journey brought me so much shock. The aesthetics, wisdom, and craftsmanship of the ancients are all worth learning from! However, checking in at ancient buildings in Shanxi is not easy. There are many spots and they are scattered. It is recommended to drive by yourself. Some niche ancient buildings are not open to the public and require contacting cultural preservation personnel.
