🏮 Yangzhou | A City Where History Never Left

There are cities you visit for their sights, and then there are cities where history seems to follow you down every street. Yangzhou is one of them. For centuries, this elegant city on the Grand Canal has been shaped by water, trade, gardens, poetry and culture. Walk through its old quarters, beside quiet canals and beneath ancient trees, and it is easy to imagine the city as it might have appeared during the prosperous eras of imperial China. The traces of the Sui, Tang, Ming and Qing dynasties seem to overlap here — in traditional architecture, classical gardens, historic streets and the timeless rhythm of life along the waterways. Perhaps that is Yangzhou's greatest charm: the past does not feel sealed away in museums. It lingers in the bridges, gardens, courtyards and canals, quietly woven into the city of today. 📍 Yangzhou, Jiangsu, China 🇨🇳 📸 Photography Tip: Explore the historic areas in the early morning, when the streets are quieter and the soft light brings out the textures of old walls, tiled roofs and waterways. ✨ Signature Feeling: A city where canals carry not only water, but centuries of memory. In Yangzhou, you don't simply walk through history — you seem to walk inside it.

Yangzhou Morning Breakfast

Yangzhou Morning Breakfast

I never thought there would be another city in China that takes their breakfast seriously. I know the Hong Kongers, and Cantonese people too. Till I arrived in Yangzhou. I had breakfast at this restaurant where so many oldies were at. It was a really local thing to do and made me so impressed. They call it 早茶,morning tea. I love this so much. One set was only around 48-58RMB or so, I don’t remember exactly and came with a range of baos. I am NOT a morning person but this kind of tradition? I can definitely wake up to have it everyday. I quite like it, hearing the chattering of the old folks and drinking Chinese tea. If I never went to Yangzhou, I would have never get to experience another form of breakfast. A Slow Walk Around Yizheng Drum Tower: One of Jiangsu’s Quietest Historic Corners

If you are looking for a historic spot in Jiangsu that feels much less touristy than Yangzhou’s famous gardens, Yizheng Drum Tower is worth putting on your list. I visited it as part of a slow walk around central Yizheng, and what surprised me most was how naturally the old building blends into everyday city life. It does not feel like a huge tourist attraction surrounded by souvenir shops. Instead, it feels like a piece of history that the city simply grew around. The Drum Tower stands in the heart of Zhenzhou Town, at 168 Guoqing Road, and is one of the surviving historic drum towers in Jiangsu. The present structure dates back to the Ming Chenghua period, with construction beginning in 1487 and finishing in 1488. It was built on the site of an earlier southern gate of the ancient Zhenzhou city. The tower has survived centuries of changes and was officially listed as a Jiangsu Provincial Cultural Relic in 2002. My favorite part of the visit was actually not taking dozens of photos of the tower. I spent some time walking around the square, looking at the old structure from different angles and watching local people go about their day. The contrast was surprisingly interesting: a building with nearly six centuries of history standing right in the middle of a modern urban area. One thing I would recommend is taking your time rather than treating the Drum Tower as a quick photo stop. Look closely at the roof, wooden structure, stonework and the elevated platform. The proportions become much easier to appreciate when you walk around it instead of only photographing the front. The nearby city streets also make the visit feel more authentic. There is an important practical detail, though: do not automatically assume that you can climb to the top every day. Historical information and local visitor reports indicate that access to the upper part has not always been continuously open, with preservation of the old structure being one reason for restrictions. Special public-opening activities have taken place during holidays in some years. Current local listings describe the surrounding attraction as free to visit, but opening arrangements can vary, so I would check locally before making the trip specifically for an interior visit. My little travel story from Yizheng was that I originally expected the Drum Tower to be a “ten-minute stop.” Instead, I ended up slowing down, wandering around the surrounding streets and noticing how different the experience was from visiting a major landmark in a famous tourist city. There was no pressure to rush, no long queue, and no feeling that I had to follow a fixed sightseeing route. That is probably what I enjoyed most. If you are already visiting Yangzhou, Yizheng makes an interesting side trip for travelers who enjoy local history, old architecture and less-commercialized places. I would combine the Drum Tower with a walk through central Yizheng rather than traveling all the way there just to see one building. And here is the question I kept thinking about after the visit: would you rather visit a famous historic landmark packed with tourists, or a much quieter one where you can actually sit nearby and watch ordinary local life happening around it? #travelersvoice #chinatravelcircle

The ultra-healing aesthetics of Jiangsu at night: a boat of warm lights, a city of misty rain. Chinese aesthetics are absolutely breathtaking!.

The ultra-healing aesthetics of Jiangsu at night: a boat of warm lights, a city of misty rain. Chinese aesthetics are absolutely breathtaking!.

· -- Thought the aesthetics of domestic tourist spots were all giving "tacky hodgepodge" energy? The night views in Jiangsu totally schooled me! Zero gaudy LED strips, no tacky neon lights, and absolutely no cringe "internet-famous" street signs crashing the vibe! With those soft, warm yellow lanterns along the Qinhuai River, the candlelight shatters into the ripples of the water. It seriously gives off this romantic vibe, like soaking the entire history of the Southern Dynasties until it's soft enough to be whispered slowly into your ear. Slender West Lake is on another level! It uses just a subtle touch of light to trace the silhouettes of the pavilions and eaves, leaving the rest to the night sky and the moonlight to "set the mood". When the breeze hits, it feels like a literal Chinese ink-wash painting coming alive on its own. It’s so therapeutic. As for Zhouzhuang, even the lanterns are intentionally distressed—deep red lights reflecting off the misty cobblestone streets. With the boatwomen gently rowing and the soft melodies of traditional Wu songs lingering in the air, there’s absolutely no noise pollution from viral pop songs. The tender charm of ancient Jiangnan instantly snaps back to reality, and the whole night is just an intimate conversation between you and the ancient water town. Turns out, this is what top-tier aesthetic sophistication looks like—no exaggerated clutter, just trusting that the mountains and rivers will speak for themselves; using negative space and shadows to perfectly round out the lighting. Less is more, and all you need to do is soak it all in quietly. Jiangsu’s nightscapes reject any forced "photo-op" labels, and you won't find any "cookie-cutter tour guide spiels" here. All that’s left is the wind rustling through the bamboo and the water lapping against the rocky shores. Everything slows all the way down, letting you fully melt into the Jiangnan lifestyle. I finally get it—traditional Chinese aesthetics aren't dead; they're just quietly tucked away in unpretentious corners, waiting for you to take your time to explore and feel them. Actually, there was never a problem with the scenery; I was just visiting the wrong places all along! Must-visit recommendations for Jiangsu night tours: 🌉【Qinhuai River】Along the Qinhuai River, Qinhuai District, Nanjing · The classic night view is super romantic. Highly recommend getting there at dusk to catch a night cruise experience~ 🏞️【Slender West Lake】No. 28 Changchun Road, Hanjiang District, Yangzhou · Moonlight strolls and illuminated pavilions make for insane photo ops. Open until 21:00. 🚣♀️【Zhouzhuang Ancient Town】Zhouzhuang Town, Kunshan City, Suzhou · The lanterns light up after 6 PM, giving the ancient town even more of a magical flair. Open until 21:00. If you want to experience true Oriental aesthetic art, a night tour in Jiangsu is absolutely worth recommending! Waiting for you to slowly uncover this unhurried, breathtaking Jiangnan nightscape that makes your heart skip a beat at every glance ✨

🍜 6 Chinese Foods Every First-Time Visitor Should Try🌶️

🍜 6 Chinese Foods Every First-Time Visitor Should Try🌶️

If you visit China and only eat “familiar” food, you’re missing half the adventure. 🥢🇨🇳 Chinese food is so much more than the dishes you probably know from your local takeaway. From smoky street food to delicate dumplings and seriously spicy noodles, every region brings something different to the table. Here are 6 foods I’d put on any first-time China itinerary: 🥟 1. Xiaolongbao These delicate soup dumplings are a Shanghai classic. Bite carefully—the hot broth inside has a habit of escaping when you least expect it. 😅 🦆 2. Peking Duck Crispy skin, thin pancakes, sauces, and fresh vegetables. It’s a Beijing institution and one of those meals that feels like an experience, not just dinner. 🌶️ 3. Chongqing Hotpot Ready for some heat? A bubbling, spicy broth where you cook your own ingredients at the table. Order cautiously if you’re not used to serious chilli. 🍜 4. Lanzhou Beef Noodles Hand-pulled noodles in a fragrant beef broth, usually served with beef, herbs, and radish. Simple, comforting, and perfect for a quick meal. 🥞 5. Jianbing Think of it as China’s answer to a breakfast crepe—but much more interesting. Crispy, savory, filled with sauces and toppings, and often made right in front of you at a street stall. 🍚 6. Yangzhou Fried Rice A classic fried-rice dish associated with Yangzhou, packed with ingredients and far more nuanced than the average takeaway version. And here’s the best advice: Don’t spend your entire trip searching for the “perfect” restaurant. Some of the most memorable food experiences can happen at a tiny neighborhood restaurant, a busy noodle shop, or a street stall with a queue of locals. Try the famous dishes. Try something you can’t pronounce. Try something you’ve never seen before. Because one of the best ways to experience China is one bite at a time. 🥢 Save this list before your trip—and tell me which one you’d try first. #travelersvoice #chinatravelcircle

Yangzhou Travel Guide

I went to Yangzhou on a non-holiday last year, and here's a supplement to the guide, highly recommended. 1. Stay near Caoyi Street and Pishi Street, where several streets are connected together, which is very convenient. Moreover, Yangzhou's attractions are relatively concentrated and not too far away. Park your car at the hotel, and it's very convenient to travel by shared electric bikes. Don't drive, it's very congested. 2. The Yangzhou Grand Canal Museum is highly recommended. I've been to many museums and none can compare! It's quite large, so make an appointment in advance. 3. Slender West Lake is quite big and the scenery is also very good. He Garden and Ge Garden are also nice to stroll around and experience the cultural atmosphere. I've had morning tea at several places, and honestly, I think they're all pretty much the same. Spending two days in Yangzhou with my wife and child, riding electric bikes through the city, was really pleasant and comfortable. Everywhere we went, there were quaint buildings and delightful scenery.
