Tucked along the western coast and surrounded by water and mountains, Ålesund is like a fairytale brought to life—elegant Art Nouveau buildings rising above sparkling fjords and narrow streets echoing with stories of the sea. After a fire destroyed much of the town in 1904, it was rebuilt in stunning Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) architecture. Wandering through the town center felt like exploring an open-air museum—each building adorned with turrets, spires, and whimsical details. The colors, the symmetry, the craftsmanship—it was a visual feast. The view from Mount Aksla was the highlight of my visit. A climb up 418 steps led me to a panoramic lookout that took my breath away: the town’s pastel rooftops spilling into the sea, the surrounding fjords stretching endlessly, and the Sunnmøre Alps standing tall in the distance. It was one of the most unforgettable vistas I’ve ever experienced. I also explored the Atlantic Sea Park (Atlanterhavsparken)—one of the largest saltwater aquariums in Europe. Watching sea otters and seals up close while learning about marine life was both relaxing and fascinating. For a quieter escape, I hopped on a short boat ride to the nearby island of Godøy, where I hiked to the Alnes Lighthouse and was rewarded with sweeping coastal views and crashing waves. It felt like standing at the edge of the world. Best Time to Visit: Late May to early September, when the weather is mild and the days are long. Helpful Tips: Bring a windproof jacket—it gets breezy even in summer. Visit the Jugendstilsenteret (Art Nouveau Center) to understand the town’s unique architecture.
