During the Republic of China, it was called Jingshan Dongjie. In 1965, Donglao Hutong was merged into it and it was renamed Shatan Houjie. The street was originally home to the residence of Princess Hejia of the Qing Dynasty. In 1898, the Imperial University of Peking (the predecessor of Peking University) was built on the north side of the street. In 1935, the Peking University Geological Museum was built on the south side of the street. Large passenger vehicles are prohibited from passing through Shatan Houjie from 7:00 to 20:00 every day. The site of the Imperial University of Peking is located at No. 59 Shatan Houjie and is a cultural relic protection unit in Beijing. The Imperial University of Peking was founded in the 24th year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty (1898). Its campus was originally the vacant residence of Princess Hejia, the fourth daughter of Emperor Qianlong. That year, under the influence of the reformists, Emperor Guangxu accepted the reform proposals of Kang Youwei and Liang Qichao, implemented new policies, and established the Imperial University of Peking as one of the new policies. After the founding of the Republic of China, the Imperial University of Peking was renamed Peking University. The existing buildings include the main hall and the princess courtyard of Princess Hejia's residence, as well as the Mathematics Department building and the "Xizhai" 14-row Chinese-style bungalows built during the Republic of China. It is the first modern university in China.
