During the reign of King Jinpyeong of Silla, a man named Muwollyang fell in love at first sight with a woman named Yeonhwa!! The two fell in love, and their relationship deepened. However, Muwolryang was a government official of Silla, so his term in Gangneung (Myeongju) ended inevitably. Muwolryang regretfully returned to his hometown, saying, "If there is Yeon, we will become a couple." Muwolryang left Gangneung, and Yeonhwa was filled with longing. There was a deep pond to the north of Yeonhwa's house, and Yeonhwa lamented while feeding the fish in the pond every day. Among them, a pair of unusual fish heard Yeonhwa's story. When Yeonhwa's parents did not return, they were preparing to send her off to another family, and Yeonhwa was even more heartbroken. Feeling desperate, Yeonhwa gave a letter to the fish in the pond and asked it to deliver it to Muwolryang. The fish understood, swam across the East Sea, and arrived at the place where Muwolryang was fishing!!! Muwolryang saw a letter coming out of the fish he had caught. The letter was Yeonhwa's, and Muwolryang immediately replied. After that, it is said that Muwolryang married Lady Yeonhwa and lived happily. ------ A walking trail befitting a beautiful tale The Wolhwajeong tale is a very famous tale in the Gangneung area. The surname of the person named Muwolryang is 'Kim Muwolryang', and Kim Muwolryang's descendant is Kim Juwon, the king of Myeongju during the Unified Silla period. He is also the founder of the Gangneung Kim clan. ------- Wolhwajeong walking trail Wolhwajeong faces Namdaecheon, so it offers a very beautiful view. In particular, if you take a picture at Wolhwajeong during the Gangneung Danoje Festival season held in May, you can take a masterpiece picture of the Namdaecheon dam, Danoje Festival, Jungang Market, and Wolhwa Street. Since the Namdaecheon Bridge was changed to a sidewalk, it has become a walking trail frequently visited by Gangneung citizens. The reason is that it is adjacent to the city and is very cool because it receives the river breeze from Namdaecheon. When you cross the railroad bridge (photos 5, 6, 7, 8, 9), you will see a quiet rural village away from the bustling Gangneung city. Personally, I like quiet walking paths like this, so I feel even more attached to them. If you keep going, you will come across a tunnel called 'Noam Tunnel'. This tunnel used to be a passage for the Mugunghwa train. It is not very long, about 100m long. Since it is a tunnel that passes under Noam-dong, there are Gangwon Yeongdong Military Manpower Administration and apartments above the tunnel. A walking path that passes under the city! It is amazing. The width of the tunnel is surprisingly wide. It is wide enough for 4 adult men to pass in a line. As a result, the wind passes well. It is very cool. The colorless concrete can give off a gloomy feeling, but with the soft lighting installed, it feels like a cave? a cafe? The tunnel, which was built over 40 years ago, has become retro. In 2017, when the walking path was not maintained, I was too scared to go to Noam Tunnel.
