The Marquis of Amesa Carrigal was the original owner of the Torrea Estate vineyards and winery in Elciego. He was a man who held many titles, including diplomat, journalist, and free thinker. He became a citizen of Bordeaux, France in 1836. In 1858, the Marquis of Amesacarriguel was commissioned by the Diputacion Foral de Alava to hire a French oenologist to teach the locals how to make wine using Medoc techniques. The Marquis collaborated with Jean Pineau, director of Chateau Lanessan, and signed a technical contract with him on behalf of the provincial government to help the wineries in the province of Álava. In the same year, Marquis de Riscal sent 9,000 excellent vines to Rioja, where the dominant varieties at the time were still Tempranillo and Graciano.
