Originally the palace of the Russian Empire's tsars, it is an outstanding example of 18th century Russian neoclassical architecture on Palace Square. The Winter Palace is magnificent and grand, with various types of marble, turquoise, lapis lazuli, jasper, and jade inlaid inside; decorated with gold plating and copper plating; adorned with sculptures, murals, and embroidered curtains of various textures.
