The Amanyangyun in Shanghai is a source of pride for every Chinese.

True beauty takes time; all the wonders of the world are gifts of time. Seizing the opportunity of my birthday, I visited Amanyangyun in Shanghai and performed a tree-blessing ritual under the 1,600-year-old camphor tree. I highly recommend spending 15 minutes in the screening room near the front desk after check-in to watch the documentary *I Wish to Live Another 500 Years*. It not only tells the origin story of Amanyangyun but also recounts the arduous journey of rescuing and relocating over 10,000 ancient trees and dozens of old houses from Jiangxi to Shanghai. It was a single act of goodwill that made today’s Aman possible. Understanding the philosophy that "Heaven, Earth, and I share the same life; all things and I are one" will deepen your reverence for the ancient trees (see image three) and the belief that "all things possess a spirit." What struck me most at Amanyangyun was the profound sense of tranquility, both within and around. Whether it was the Nan Shufang study, the courtyard of the guest room, or the lawn by the stream, everything was immaculately arranged, exuding a subtle Zen-like aura. Later, I visited the Nan Shufang to craft incense, savor a pot of tea, and practice calligraphy—experiences that helped me understand why ancient scholars considered such activities refined pleasures. True elegance lies in what quiets the mind.
