Wat Sri Sawai, Sukhothai Historical Park

Wat Si Sawai Located south of Wat Mahathat and close to the southern wall of Sukhothai city, this important ancient site consists of three prangs in the Lopburi style, which was influenced by Khmer art. However, the prangs are rather slender and sit on a low base. Some of the stucco patterns resemble those on Chinese Yuan Dynasty pottery. A lintel was found carved with the image of Narayana reclining on the ocean, pieces of idols, and Shiva. In front of the prangs, there are two connected chapels. The entire site is surrounded by a wall made of laterite. In 1907, King Rama VI, when he was crown prince of Siam, visited Wat Si Sawai and found a statue of Phra Sayumphu (Lord Shiva) in the chapel. He therefore assumed that Wat Si Sawai might be a Brahman-Hindu temple.
