Tartu Town Hall Square is a trapezoidal central square located in the heart of Tartu, surrounded by classical buildings. The current Town Hall is the third building built on this spot. In the 18th century, the square was the city's most important market, called "Der Groß Markt" or "Big Market". Since 1998, the square has also become a prominent landmark, with a fountain of kissing students. Every day, the bells ring out from the Town Hall tower. The 18 bells were cast at a bell foundry in Karlsruhe, Germany, and 16 were cast to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the bells played at the Royal Eisbout Belfry in the Netherlands.
