Zheng Xiaogu's original name was Cunzhu (eat Zhu), courtesy name Xianfu, and nickname Xiaogu. He was born in the sixth year of Jiaqing in the Qing Dynasty (1801) and died in the eleventh year of Tongzhi (1872) at the age of 71. Zheng Xiaogu was a famous educator, exegete, and poet-scholar of the Qing Dynasty. After passing the imperial examination in 1835, he served as the Chief Clerk of the Yunnan-Jiangsu Division of the Ministry of Justice. Dissatisfied with the officialdom's infighting, he resigned after only 14 months and returned to his hometown. He devoted his life to writing and teaching. He served as the head lecturer at more than 10 academies in Xiangzhou, Guangzhou, Yizhou, Guilin, etc. He authored nearly 2 million words of works on exegesis, literature, and poetry. He was known as the "Talented Scholar of Lingnan" and "Master of the Two Guangs". The former residence of Zheng Xiaogu has three buildings with a total of 9 rooms, covering an area of 1174.5 square meters and a construction area of 68775 square meters. In 2008, the former residence of Xiaogu was announced as a county-level cultural relic protection unit. In 2014, the county government invested 2 million yuan to carry out the first phase of renovation of the former residence, including the reconstruction of the gatehouse, main house, Xixiao Pavilion, Zheng Clan Ancestral Hall, and part of the surrounding wall. In 2017, 750,000 yuan was invested to carry out the second phase of renovation of the former residence, including the reconstruction of "Bu Xue Xuan" and "Yang Yu Shi". After renovation, the former residence has basically restored its original appearance. The renovated former residence is more culturally rich.
