#mediterranean During our Mediterranean cruise we had stop in the port of beautiful town Messina. And I’ll share all the best things to do there from cruise ship. The small strip of sea that separates mainland Italy from the island of Sicily is called the Straight of Messina. The sea passage is just 2 miles (3 km) wide at its narrowest point. Messina is walkable for most cruise passengers, but local buses and trams cover the longer stretches. One of the coolest things in town is the Astronomical Clock of the Cathedral of Messina. The almost 100-year-old clock tower puts on a show every 15 minutes, with the best show happening at the top of the hour. Throughout the year, as time passes, the clock tower has different statues on display. Climbing to the top of the tower gives you a great view of the city below. During the climb, you get the chance to see the inner workings of the astronomical clock. Best viewed as your cruise ship enters or leaves the port, the Stele Della Madonna Della Lettera is a golden statue of the Virgin Mary at the top of a marble column. Popular day trips from Messina cruise port include Taormina, Mount Etna, and the hilltop town of Savoca, made famous by The Godfather. An extraordinary city in Sicily. It's easily accessible by a regular bus from Catania. The bus ride takes about 1.5 hours, and tickets cost around €5 to €10. Buses run frequently, every 30 minutes. You can catch them at the Catania Central Bus Station or Fontanarossa Airport. In Messina, the bus arrives at Piazza della Repubblica. It's located right next to the seaport, which is super convenient if you're continuing your journey by boat. The city is quiet, cozy, and absolutely beautiful. Walking along its tree-lined streets makes it easy to reach almost any spot you want to visit. There's so much to see in Messina: 1. Most stores in Messina are open from Monday to Saturday. Typical business hours are from around 9:00 AM–10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, and after a lunch break (siesta), they reopen from 4:00 PM–5:00 PM until 7:30 PM–8:00 PM. Larger stores and some supermarkets might stay open all day without a lunch break and even operate on Sundays.

Dublin in winter is just various shades of grey. Wet grey, windy grey, freezing grey. Usually, my idea of a holiday is dragging myself up a muddy hill in the Lake District or sweating through the Alps. But I’ve been looking at those Mediterranean cruise routes lately. The ones doing Rome, Marseille, Barcelona, maybe down to Sicily. Eight days. You unpack once. Wake up and you're in Naples. No logistics. No navigating Italian train stations with a heavy pack. My knees are practically begging me to book it. It feels a bit like cheating, to be honest. No physical exertion. Just staring at blue water with a book. But the thought of actual sunshine is quite tempting. I hear the early spring slots go quickly. Might actually have to make a decision for once. Espresso in Rome beats a soggy ham sandwich on a windy Irish ridge any day, I suppose.

At six in the morning, the sun rises; at six in the evening, the moon sets. I slowly ascend the stone steps of the mountain town. The air still carries the coolness of night; the streetlights are still on, and only a few cats dart about silently. As the first golden rays emerge from the horizon of the Ionian Sea, the entire city of Taomina seems to be gently awakened. Rooftops, balconies, and ancient walls are all bathed in a soft orange hue. I sit on the viewing platform overlooking Isola Bella, watching the small island lie quietly in the sea, a few rocks scattered around like guardians. The sea shimmers in the morning light, occasionally a small boat glides by, leaving a soft white trail. At that moment, time seems to slow down. Many say Taomina's most beautiful sight is at sunset, but I think sunrise is the true romance for solo travelers. Before the world awakens, you can watch the entire bay light up from darkness on the mountain, like witnessing the breath of a city.

They gave me a voucher for breakfast at the restaurant below. 🍴 Food Spots I ate at pizzeria KAIROS. They had a thick pizza with so many varieties it was hard to choose. 📌 Useful Information Note that the ferry boarding point on the Messina side varies depending on your destination on the other side. It may be far from the central station. Many restaurants are closed on Sundays, and Google's information is unreliable.
