Messina travel guide and discussion

#mediterranean During our Mediterranean cruise we had stop in the port of beautiful town Messina. And I’ll share all the best things to do there from cruise ship. The small strip of sea that separates mainland Italy from the island of Sicily is called the Straight of Messina. The sea passage is just 2 miles (3 km) wide at its narrowest point. Messina is walkable for most cruise passengers, but local buses and trams cover the longer stretches. One of the coolest things in town is the Astronomical Clock of the Cathedral of Messina. The almost 100-year-old clock tower puts on a show every 15 minutes, with the best show happening at the top of the hour. Throughout the year, as time passes, the clock tower has different statues on display. Climbing to the top of the tower gives you a great view of the city below. During the climb, you get the chance to see the inner workings of the astronomical clock. Best viewed as your cruise ship enters or leaves the port, the Stele Della Madonna Della Lettera is a golden statue of the Virgin Mary at the top of a marble column. Popular day trips from Messina cruise port include Taormina, Mount Etna, and the hilltop town of Savoca, made famous by The Godfather. If you're looking to maximize your time from the Messina port, guided tours make it easy to get out of town and back in time.

Italy🇮🇹Church of the Assumption of Our Lady Walking from the university, there is a very unique church of Our Lady. I was deeply attracted by its octagonal appearance. The whole church uses silver elements. It is worth visiting. Italy🇮🇹Santuario Parrocchia di Santa Maria del Carmine Walking from the university, you‘ll find a uniquely shaped church, the Church of the Assumption. Its octagonal exterior is quite captivating, and the entire church incorporates silver elements, making it worth a visit.

Many people say, "Southern Italy and Sicily are the soul of the Mediterranean, the truest, most authentic Italy." On my third trip to Italy, I finally arrived at the soul of Italy! Here you'll find not only sunshine, volcanoes, lemons, wineries, and jelly-like seas, but also the historical layers of ancient Greek, Roman, Arab, and other civilizations. The beauty here comes from the collision of ancient culture and natural wonders, and above all the relaxed way of life that pervades everything. The sun and sea breeze carry the Mediterranean's unique languid charm, making it especially suitable for a vacation. So, since this trip coincided with our 25th wedding anniversary, we planned a full 20-day vacation. This relaxed, slow-paced approach—no rushing, no packed itinerary—is the essence of southern Italy and Sicily D1️⃣: ✈️ Arrive in Naples D2️⃣: Naples ➡️ Sorrento D3️⃣: Sorrento ➡️ Positano ➡️ (stay) Sorrento (guide posted) D4️⃣: Sorrento ➡️ Amalfi ➡️ Ravello ➡️ (stay) Sorrento (guide posted) D5️⃣: Sorrento ➡️ Capri (guide posted) D6️⃣: Capri D7️⃣: Capri ➡️ Naples, rent a car in Naples, then ➡️ Alberobello ➡️ Matera (guide posted) D8️⃣: Matera ➡️ Tropea (guide posted) D9️⃣: Tropea ➡️ Messina ferry ➡️ Taormina (ferry guide posted) D🔟: Taormina (guide posted) D1️⃣1️⃣: Taormina D1️⃣2️⃣: Taormina ➡️ Cefalù D1️⃣3️⃣: Cefalù (guide posted) D1️⃣4️⃣: Cefalù ➡️ Palermo D1️⃣5️⃣: Palermo ➡️ Trapani ➡️ Favignana (stunning jelly-like sea, only a 30-minute boat ride from Trapani) ➡️ (stay) Trapani D1️⃣6️⃣: Trapani ➡️ Scala dei Turchi (guide posted) ➡️ Agrigento D1️⃣7️⃣: Agrigento ➡️ Noto (guide posted) ➡️ Syracuse D1️⃣8️⃣: Syracuse (guide posted) D1️⃣9️⃣: Syracuse ➡️ Catania D2️⃣0️⃣: Return car at Catania airport ➡️ ✈️ home 🔔 Tips: 1️⃣ Amalfi, Capri, Taormina, and Cefalù were the four places I loved most on this trip. They are great for a vacation and worth staying a few extra days 2️⃣ The roads in the towns around Amalfi are very narrow and test driving skills, and parking is difficult and expensive, so driving is not recommended. Public transport is also convenient (transport guide posted; see my earlier posts) 3️⃣ Many places in Italy have ZTL restricted zones (Zona Traffico Limitato). If you enter one, you may face heavy fines. When booking a hotel, find one close to the ZTL but outside it so you can park at the hotel and walk into the old town 4️⃣ Italians are very warm, but driving can be aggressive. Drivers often change lanes without signaling and honk frequently. I've driven in many places around the world, and the only place I've repeatedly experienced lane changes without signaling and persistent honking is Italy, so be careful and stay focused when driving

The Santuario della Madonna della Rocca is hands-down one of the most jaw-dropping hidden gems in Sicily—picture this: a 17th-century church carved straight into the side of a volcano, perched wayyy above Taormina! 🌋✨ You’ll find this incredible cave church on Monte Tauro, about 398–400 meters above sea level. It’s just a quick hike from the center of Taormina, next to the iconic Saracen Castle (Castello Saraceno) and Castel Taormina. The address isn’t your classic street location, but plug “Santuario della Madonna della Rocca, Via Madonna della Rocca, 98039 Taormina ME, Italy” into your map and you’re golden! History? Oh, it’s got ALL the vibes. The sanctuary was built around 1640 by Abate Francesco Raineri, with some backup from Messina’s top church guy, Archbishop Geronimo Venero. Totally Instagram-worthy, the inside is one big, rustic room with raw Taormina cave rock for a ceiling—honestly, it feels like you’re stepping into another world! ⛪️ Right outside, there’s a massive reinforced concrete cross (#statementpiece ) from 1930. And next to the church, you’ll spot an abandoned Basilian hermitage—hello, easy moody photo op! The place really comes alive every third Sunday in September, too, when they have a big feast day celebration. Want more deets? Hit me up if you want the wild legend of the shepherd boy (it’s a whole mystical mood), easy hiking/ walking directions from the town center, or the latest visiting hours and mass schedule! Trust me, if you’re in Taormina, this magical, rocky hideaway needs to be on your list. The views are seriously 🤯 and the story behind it adds so much flair to your Sicily adventure.

#scenicviews If you’re chasing next-level scenic views, The Alcantara Gorge (Gole dell'Alcantara) in northeastern Sicily is your must-see! Situated between Messina and Catania, this natural wonder is straight-up unreal. Picture this: the Alcantara River slicing through ancient black basalt lava from Mount Etna, creating dramatic, geometric columns that shoot 25 meters high. Those mesmerising “organ pipe,” “fan,” and “rosette”-shaped formations look totally out of this world! The entrance is found at Via Nazionale, 5, 98030 Motta Camastra ME, Italy. The gorge usually opens daily from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM during summer (hours can vary by season, so check ahead!). Walking along the river or splashing your feet in the crystal-clear water gives you that epic adventure vibe—and the photo ops? Absolutely next-level for your feed. If you want full mythic energy plus some secret Sicily magic, Alcantara Gorge is your spot. More than just a canyon—this place is a literal lava masterpiece.

Planning a multi-country Mediterranean trip involves complex logistics like cross-border transportation, hotel changes, and language barriers, which can eat into time meant for sightseeing and culture. Viking Cruises' one-stop service integrates transportation, accommodation, dining, and guided tours into a seamless experience. Travelers only need to decide on their departure date and itinerary; the brand handles the rest. Founded in 1997 and listed on the NYSE in 2024, Viking Cruises has nearly 30 years of experience in the cruise industry and maintains independent offices in Beijing and Shanghai. In 2026, it will launch 9 Mediterranean cruise itineraries exclusively customized for Chinese guests with full Chinese-language service. Below, we break down how Viking's one-stop service works across 5 aspects: budget, language, dining and accommodation, itinerary, and routes. 　　1. Budget confirmation: understand your base costs with one ticket 　　Viking ocean cruise tickets use an all-inclusive model, integrating the following 7 core benefits: 　　Airport transfers (at designated airports) 　　Veranda stateroom accommodation 　　All onboard meals 　　One curated shore excursion per destination 　　Access to spa and fitness facilities 　　Onboard entertainment and activities 　　Use of self-service laundry 　　Shore excursions are divided into included and optional premium projects. Each destination includes at least 1 complimentary tour or featured experience daily. Guests can follow a Chinese-speaking guide to explore classic city sites, use free time for independent exploration, or choose optional premium projects as needed. All optional projects are clearly priced with no forced consumption. 　　2. Chinese-language service: covering pre-trip, in-trip, and shore-side stages 　　Leveraging years of service experience from its self-operated teams in Beijing and Shanghai, Viking has built a multi-scenario Chinese-language service chain covering every stage of the journey: 　　Pre-trip planning consultation: Dedicated staff provide Chinese-language itinerary explanations and 1-on-1 coordination for the entire trip; 　　Arrival transfer coordination: Airport transfers at designated airports are seamlessly handled by a Chinese-speaking team; 　　Onboard Chinese service: All ship signage, menus, and daily activity reports are in Chinese; a full Chinese-speaking service team is on board; 　　Shore excursion support: Each ship is equipped with a travel concierge team, paired with local guides providing Chinese-language commentary, and wireless audio equipment is provided. 　　3. Onboard dining and accommodation: tailored to Chinese travel habits 　　Viking's room and dining configurations are designed around the daily habits of Chinese travelers. 　　Staterooms: There are no interior staterooms on the ship; all rooms feature a private veranda. Standard amenities include 110/220V national standard sockets, USB ports, electric kettles, and Chinese tea bags. Bathrooms are equipped with floor heating and anti-fog mirrors, and toiletries are labeled in Chinese. 　　Dining: The ship features 7 specialty dining venues, offering over 800 Chinese and Western dishes, with menus updated regularly. All are included in the ticket price with no extra fees. 　　Onboard atmosphere: No casinos, no young children, and no hidden fees. The ship features art galleries and library reading areas, with daily cultural lectures and musical performances. 　　4. Shore excursions: relaxed pace, in-depth exploration 　　Viking's itinerary: The ship docks at 1 port city each day. Guests go ashore for sightseeing during the day and return to the ship to sail at night, eliminating the need to change hotels throughout the trip. Each stop offers a Chinese-language guided tour included in the ticket price, visiting core city landmarks and historical sites, while also leaving ample time for independent exploration. 　　Viking ocean ships are small-to-medium-sized luxury cruise ships (carrying 930 passengers). Their flexible size allows them to dock at ports inaccessible to large cruise ships, bringing guests closer to the heart of the destination. Some itineraries include overnight stays at popular destinations. Viking offers tiered excursion options at each destination: basic projects are included in the ticket price; premium projects are available for an additional fee, allowing for deeper exploration of niche attractions or participation in unique experiences. Regardless of the choice, a Chinese-speaking guide accompanies guests throughout. 　　5. Route selection: 8 itineraries for 2026, covering various travel durations 　　Viking's 2026 Mediterranean Chinese-language cruise itineraries include 8 routes, covering 9 countries and 28 destinations. They are divided into 3 groups by duration: 　　1. Short-haul (8 days) 　　8-day Italian Renaissance Charm (Rome → Venice): Cruises along the Italian peninsula, passing through Naples, Messina (Sicily), Crotone, and Bari. 　　8-day Western Mediterranean Classic (Rome ↔︎ Barcelona): Passes through Spain, France, Monaco, and Italy, with 64% of the time spent in port. 　　2. Medium-to-long haul (10–15 days) 　　10-day Greek and Adriatic Romance (Venice → Athens): Passes through Dubrovnik, Kotor Bay, Santorini, and more. 　　10-day Eastern Mediterranean Ottoman Trail (Venice → Istanbul): Via the Acropolis of Athens and the ancient city of Ephesus, arriving in Istanbul. 　　13-day Mediterranean Civilization Highlights (Barcelona → Venice): Via Roman ruins, the ancient city of Pompeii, the water city of Venice, and more. 　　15-day Western Mediterranean and Apennine Peninsula (Barcelona → Venice): Includes overnight stays at multiple ports. 　　3. Travelers only need to decide on their departure date and route; the brand handles the rest. With 1 ticket, you can explore multiple Mediterranean countries.

#worthitornot If I saw a long queue for ice cream back home, I'd probably keep walking. But at Messina in Singapore, curiosity got the better of me. After waiting in line, I ordered two scoops so I could try different flavors—and I'm glad I did. Both were incredibly creamy, packed with flavor, and easily among the best ice creams I've had in Singapore. After the first few bites, the wait didn't seem to matter anymore. What I liked most was that the quality actually matched the popularity. It's easy for famous places to be overhyped, but in this case, I understood exactly why people were willing to queue. For me, that stop became one of the highlights of my summer afternoon in Singapore. Sometimes, all you need is a stroll through the city and an ice cream that's genuinely worth waiting for. What's the longest you've ever waited for food—and did it live up to the hype? 📍 Messina, 1 Club St, Singapore 069400

✨ Like a Sweet Warm Hug This isn’t just dessert—it’s pure comfort food that feels like a little treat just for you. Soft, creamy, and never too heavy, it wraps around your heart as much as your tastebuds. The cosy, laid-back space at Club Street feels like a quiet escape from the busy city—perfect for slowing down, breathing easy, and savouring every moment. Every batch is churned fresh daily from scratch, made with real ingredients that taste like home. 🍦 Comfort You Can Taste Silky smooth texture that melts gently on your tongue, with flavours that feel both familiar and special. Go for classics like rich dulce de leche, nutty pistachio praline, or dark chocolate fondant—each one feels like a gentle pick-me-up. Don’t miss the Singapore-exclusive kaya toast, teh tarik, or tau huay flavours—they bring that familiar local warmth in every spoonful. Even the fun weekly specials feel like a sweet surprise that brightens your day. 📍 Location & Access 1 Club Street, Singapore 069400 3-minute walk from Telok Ayer MRT (DT18) | Open daily 12pm–10pm (till 11pm Fri–Sat) Prices: ~S$7.50 single, S$12 double, S$14 triple scoops. 📝 Why It Feels So Right Whether you’re celebrating a small win, soothing a long day, or just sharing happy moments with someone dear—this is the comfort you need. An extraordinary city in Sicily. It's easily accessible by a regular bus from Catania. The bus ride takes about 1.5 hours, and tickets cost around €5 to €10. Buses run frequently, every 30 minutes. You can catch them at the Catania Central Bus Station or Fontanarossa Airport. In Messina, the bus arrives at Piazza della Repubblica. It's located right next to the seaport, which is super convenient if you're continuing your journey by boat. The city is quiet, cozy, and absolutely beautiful. Walking along its tree-lined streets makes it easy to reach almost any spot you want to visit. There's so much to see in Messina: 1. Messina Cathedral (Duomo di Messina) Address: Piazza del Duomo, Messina. 2. The Bell Tower and Astronomical Clock (next to the cathedral) 3. Regional Museum of Messina (MuMe) Viale della Libertà, 465, Messina. 4. Fountain of Orion (Fontana di Orione). Located right next to the Astronomical Clock. 5. Church of the Annunciation of the Catalans (SS. Annunziata dei Catalani) Via Garibaldi Giuseppe, 111, Messina. 6. Fountain of Neptune (Fontana del Nettuno) Via G. Garibaldi / Piazza Unità d'Italia, Messina. 7. Statue of the Madonna and Fort San Salvatore Via Vittorio Emanuele II, 103–109, Messina. 8. Monument to Russian Sailors Via G. Garibaldi, 247, Messina. And much more. Shopping enthusiasts will absolutely love this city. Viale San Martino is the main shopping street. It's home to a huge variety of stores selling clothing, shoes, accessories, perfumes, and jewelry. Via Garibaldi is another major shopping street packed with shops and cafes. Piazza Cairoli — the area around the square where you can also find plenty of souvenir and home goods stores. The Coin department store is one of the most popular shopping centers in town. Most stores in Messina are open from Monday to Saturday. Typical business hours are from around 9:00 AM–10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, and after a lunch break (siesta), they reopen from 4:00 PM–5:00 PM until 7:30 PM–8:00 PM. Larger stores and some supermarkets might stay open all day without a lunch break and even operate on Sundays.

If you've arrived in Messina, the gateway to Sicily, it would be a shame to just pass through! For art-loving travelers, let us introduce a hidden gem you absolutely shouldn't miss: the **Regional Museum of Messina (Museo Regionale di Messina, aka MuMe)**. 📍 Where is it? (Location & Directions) Address: Viale della Libertà, 465, 98121 Messina ME Transportation Tip: Take the **Tram** from central Messina (near the Cathedral) to the northern terminus **Boccetta** or a station near the museum, and you can comfortably arrive right in front of the main entrance. The view out the window as the tram runs along the coastline is a bonus! ✨ Special Charm of this Museum (Features) A miracle overcoming the pain of an earthquake: Messina suffered a tragedy in 1908 when a massive earthquake destroyed 90% of the city. This museum is the "memory of Messina itself," carefully preserving precious artworks miraculously rescued from the ruins of collapsed churches and palaces at that time. Pleasant and modern space: The harmonious blend of the old monastery building and the modernized new wing provides an optimal environment where you can comfortably appreciate the artworks without feeling crowded. 🎨 Captivating Exhibition Highlights (Exhibition Content) The exhibitions here showcase the flow of Sicilian art from the Middle Ages to the 19th century, among which there are **"two core masterpieces"** you must see. 1. 2 Authentic Masterpieces by Caravaggio These are genuine works left by the genius and bad boy of Baroque art, Caravaggio, when he stayed in Messina as a fugitive. : A masterpiece expressing a sacred moment in a profoundly human and realistic way with his signature intense light and dark contrast (chiaroscuro). : The dynamic hand gesture breathing life from darkness into light delivers a thrill. 2. Polyptych Altarpiece by Antonello da Messina You can witness firsthand the exquisite and detailed Flemish-style oil painting techniques of Antonello, the great Renaissance master born in Messina. 💡 Viewing Tips for Travelers! Try to imagine which churches and squares of Messina these magnificent artworks originally decorated before the 1908 earthquake. The beauty that survived the destruction will touch you even more deeply!

When visiting Messina, Sicily, the Cathedral of Messina is just a five-minute walk from downtown. The golden mosaics at the main entrance are absolutely stunning, and the astronomical clock on the facade puts on a spectacular show every day exactly at noon. The mechanical lion, rooster, and religious figures all spring to life simultaneously, making it a one-of-a-kind spot for your travel photos. The cathedral square is surrounded by charming local cafés. You absolutely must try the pistachio and lemon-flavored Sicilian Granita—it's incredibly refreshing and sweet. A short walk will take you to the Fountain of Orion and Piazza Cairoli for some sightseeing and shopping. Heading straight south brings you to Via Garibaldi, a bustling avenue lined with shops that makes retail therapy a breeze. At dusk, take a stroll down the avenue toward the seaside pier to soak in the sweeping, endless views of the Strait of Messina. It's the perfect backdrop for photos, featuring majestic cruise ships and the open sea. On a clear day, you can even spot Calabria across the water on the Italian mainland. This is your chance to take in the mountains, the sea, and the ancient city all at once, fully immersing yourself in the warm sunshine and romantic vibes of Southern Italy.

#winterescape Dive Into Messina’s Maritime Legacy at Monumento a Don Giovanni d'Austria ⚓🇮🇹 A striking tribute to naval history, the Monumento a Don Giovanni d'Austria sits proudly in the heart of Messina, offering a perfect blend of culture, classic Italian architecture, and sea-swept vibes. Whether you're a history buff or just love soaking up local legends, this landmark puts you right at the center of Messina’s vibrant cityscape. Start your visit with an easy stroll down Via Lepanto—its lively street life and classic facades make the journey just as fun as the destination. Snap your must-have shot of the monument from the front (the stonework details pop best in morning light!), and swing around for a cityscape backdrop. For those after Insta-worthy angles, step across the street: you’ll frame the monument with palm trees and the sparkling port in the background. Must-do: Pause and read the monument’s plaques—they highlight the dramatic events of the Battle of Lepanto. Take a quick walk towards the waterfront for a close-up of Messina’s bustling harbor, perfect for casual photos or people-watching. Tips: Since the attraction is open all day, it’s ideal for a quick stop anytime. Early mornings or late afternoons mean fewer crowds, better lighting, and cooler weather. Street parking is available but can fill up quickly, so plan for a bit of extra time if you’re driving. Precautions: The sidewalk can get busy, so watch your step (especially when focusing on those perfect shots). If you’re visiting in summer, bring a hat and water—the Sicilian sun packs a punch. #Messina #TravelItaly #Monuments #MaritimeHeritage #PhotoSpot

📅 Itinerary Day1:Treat yourself with Pizza at Dumeo

Dublin in winter is just various shades of grey. Wet grey, windy grey, freezing grey. Usually, my idea of a holiday is dragging myself up a muddy hill in the Lake District or sweating through the Alps. But I’ve been looking at those Mediterranean cruise routes lately. The ones doing Rome, Marseille, Barcelona, maybe down to Sicily. Eight days. You unpack once. Wake up and you're in Naples. No logistics. No navigating Italian train stations with a heavy pack. My knees are practically begging me to book it. It feels a bit like cheating, to be honest. No physical exertion. Just staring at blue water with a book. But the thought of actual sunshine is quite tempting. I hear the early spring slots go quickly. Might actually have to make a decision for once. Espresso in Rome beats a soggy ham sandwich on a windy Irish ridge any day, I suppose.

Messina is beautiful!

🏖️BAmbiance/Facilities:

At six in the morning, the sun rises; at six in the evening, the moon sets. I slowly ascend the stone steps of the mountain town. The air still carries the coolness of night; the streetlights are still on, and only a few cats dart about silently. As the first golden rays emerge from the horizon of the Ionian Sea, the entire city of Taomina seems to be gently awakened. Rooftops, balconies, and ancient walls are all bathed in a soft orange hue. I sit on the viewing platform overlooking Isola Bella, watching the small island lie quietly in the sea, a few rocks scattered around like guardians. The sea shimmers in the morning light, occasionally a small boat glides by, leaving a soft white trail. At that moment, time seems to slow down. Many say Taomina's most beautiful sight is at sunset, but I think sunrise is the true romance for solo travelers. Before the world awakens, you can watch the entire bay light up from darkness on the mountain, like witnessing the breath of a city.

hello italy ❤️❤️❤️

#mediterranean Nestled on Sicily’s northeastern tip, Messina’s history spans millennia, shaped by its strategic position on the Strait of Messina. Founded by Greek settlers in the 8th century BCE, it thrived as a key port during the Roman, Byzantine, and Arab eras. As the capital of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, it was a bustling trade hub. Devastated by earthquakes, notably in 1783 and 1908, Messina rebuilt with resilience, blending historical charm with modern vitality. Its port remains one of the Mediterranean’s busiest, a gateway to Sicily’s treasures. Messina’s historic center captivates with the Piazza del Duomo, home to the majestic Norman Cathedral. This architectural marvel houses Italy’s second-largest organ and a stunning mosaic of Christ Pantocratore. The adjacent 60-meter bell tower boasts the world’s largest astronomical clock, where gilded bronze figures perform a mesmerizing noon spectacle, accompanied by Schubert’s Ave Maria. 📅 Travel Itinerary Arrived from Taormina in the evening, stayed the night, and took the ferry the next morning. 🏨 Accommodation B&B Cairoli It was nice, but although the sign said check-in was possible until 11 PM, they asked me to arrive by 8 PM. They gave me a voucher for breakfast at the restaurant below. 🍴 Food Spots I ate at pizzeria KAIROS. They had a thick pizza with so many varieties it was hard to choose. 📌 Useful Information Note that the ferry boarding point on the Messina side varies depending on your destination on the other side. It may be far from the central station. Many restaurants are closed on Sundays, and Google's information is unreliable.
