First, we went to the Phoenix Roadside Station, which you can stop by on the way to a scenic drive. There is an observation point here where you can see the coastline with its strangely shaped rocks called the "Devil's Washing Board," and it's the perfect place to relax while feeling the morning sea breeze. The local soft serve ice cream made with mango and hyuganatsu is also popular at the shop! Next, we visited the Aoshima Botanical Garden (Miyako Botanical Garden Aoshima). With colorful tropical plants spreading out, it feels like you're in a tropical resort, and it's out of the ordinary. Another nice thing about the garden is that it's free to enter and you can take a leisurely stroll. After that, we went to the nearby Aoshima Shrine. The vermilion shrine building built on the Devil's Washing Board stands out against the sea and greenery, creating a very mystical atmosphere. It is said to bring good luck in matchmaking and good fortune, and is crowded with tourists and locals. There are also plenty of souvenir shops on the approach to the shrine! Finally, we went to the Yellow Postbox, which is a symbol of Aoshima. Just looking at the vibrantly colored postbox against the blue sky and sea will cheer you up! Sakyo-hana is located almost at the tip of the Yawata Peninsula on the east coast. It is one of Iki's most famous scenic spots, and the view of the cliffs stretching for about 1 km is a spectacular sight. The strangely shaped rocks, which look like a series of thin pillars jutting out of the sea, are called Kannon-bashira, and according to legend, they are one of eight pillars built to prevent the island from being washed away. The basalt is formed into columnar joints, and although it looks beautiful as if it were covered in snow, this is actually the droppings of cormorants. This is also a beautiful sculpture created by nature. There is a surviving biography that tells of a prolonged drought in the early Edo period, when the onmyoji Goto Sakyo and others prayed for rain at this place, heavy rain began to fall, and the villagers were saved.

I visited Iki Island in October. Although it was relatively warm, the strong winds made it feel chilly in just a T-shirt. We traveled to the island by jetfoil and returned by ferry due to bad weather. Within the island, my friend drove us around, so we didn't face any inconvenience. If you don't have a car, it's better to have a taxi or a rental car to explore the island at your own pace. We toured from the Saruiwa Rock in the west to the Harahoge Jizo in the east. We couldn't visit the northern part, so next time I would like to go to the Dolphin Park. The food was excellent, with sashimi, sea urchin rice, and Iki beef, and for drinks, there was barley shochu. I definitely want to visit again next year.
