👍️Must-see attractions: There is a stone plaque with the words "Longju Ancient Temple" engraved on it on the gate of Longju Temple. According to the existing inscription on the Public Discussion Regulations of Longju Temple on the Bank of Wuhoujin written in the first year of Daoguang reign of Qing Dynasty (1821), “Longju Ancient Temple is the Taoist temple of Baiyun Mazu, founded in Bingyin year of Hongwu reign of Ming Dynasty (1386). It has been repaired and renovated in different ways since then, and the names of the donors can be verified by recording them in the beams of the temple.”
Mazu was the founder of Zen Buddhism in the Tang Dynasty. His surname was Ma and his given name was Daoyi. He was from Shifang, Hanzhou and was an eminent Buddhist monk. A statue of Mazu and a stone column base with deep relief coiled dragon patterns are still preserved in the temple, which are said to be relics from the Tang Dynasty. After Mazu became a monk at Luohan Temple in Shifang, he came here to perform rituals. This should have been in the middle of the Tang Dynasty, more than 1,200 years ago. A Buddhist temple was built on this basis in the Bingyin year of the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty, which lasted more than 600 years.
After several major additions and reconstructions, the temple building had begun to take shape during the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty. The entire temple covers an area of more than 40 acres, with spacious and grand halls, towering ancient trees in the garden, lush and verdant, eight-shaped whitewashed walls outside the mountain gate, and ancient cypresses arranged in rows. Under the shade of the lush trees, the temple looks more solemn, profound and elegant, especially the bracket-arched architecture of the central hall and the Ming Dynasty murals in the hall, which have high historical and artistic value. They depict the Twelve Perfect Enlightenments, 72 monks and donors, with deft brushwork and line drawings covered with gold powder. The characters are solemn and beautiful, and the buildings are magnificent and splendid. The Bodhisattvas have small mustaches on their faces and each holds a magical instrument. It is a precious heritage of Chinese painting art.
In the early 1950s, the provincial cultural relics department allocated funds to build wooden railings around the central hall for protection, and later replaced them with a protective wall. In August 1956, it was announced as a provincial cultural relic protection unit by the Sichuan Provincial People's Committee. On March 26, 2013, it was listed as a national key cultural relic protection unit by the State Council.
