Decided to climb one of the top 100 mountains in Japan, Mt Karakuni, which is about 1 hour away from Kagoshima center. The drive to the trailhead was spectacular with amazing mountain ridge lines and intense greenery. The mountain hike itself was amazing, taking about 3 hours up and down with great views of the mountain crater lakes near the summit. Came back down and treated myself to a brilliant soba

As for the Onami Lake trail, there’s a parking area near the starting point, which can be easily located on maps. The sign indicates a distance of 1.2 km, but based on experience, Thai kilometers and Japanese kilometers might not be on the same scale 😅. The initial path is well-paved with beautiful stones, giving a false sense of ease, almost like a backyard stroll. However, don’t underestimate it! Those not accustomed to physical activity might find it quite exhausting 😂. Along the way, you’ll encounter locals and even groups picnicking and enjoying lunch at the top, suggesting this spot is quite popular. If you have the chance, it’s worth visiting to enjoy the elevated views.

Checked in on January 28, 2024 for a one night stay with two meals. I learned from the front desk staff that it had just snowed that morning. The hot spring pools are male and female, and they will not be switched in the morning. Dinner is a banquet meal and breakfast is a semi-buffet.
