General information
Phu Pha Lek National Park covers an area of approximately 261,875 rai or approximately 419 square kilometers, covering the areas of Song Dao District, Waritchaphum District, Nikhom Nam Un District, Kut Bak District, Sakon Nakhon Province, Wang Sam Mo District, Udon Thani Province, and Det District, Kham Muang District, Kalasin Province, in the Dong Panna National Forest Reserve, Dong Phra Chao Forest, Phu Wong Forest, Kut Hai Forest, Na Nai Forest, Non Udom Forest, Bayao Forest, Hua Na Kham Forest, Nong Ya Chai Forest, and Kaeng Ka Am Forest.
In 1995, the Royal Forest Department ordered officials to conduct a preliminary survey of the area. Later, the Royal Forest Department issued an order no. 1162/2539 dated 14 June 2539 regarding the assignment of civil servants to perform official duties, assigning Mr. Phanom Phongsuwan, Forestry Officer 7, National Park Division, to conduct a survey to find additional information and establish some conservation forest areas of the Dong Panna Forest, Dong Phrachao Forest, Song Dao District, Phu Wong Forest, Waritchaphum District, Nikhom Nam Un District, Kut Bak District, Kaeng Khan Forest, Kut Bak District, Nong Ya Sai Forest, Wang Sam Mo District, Udon Thani Province, to annex the Phu Phan Forest, Kham Muang District, Somdet District, Kaeng Ka-am Forest, Somdet District, Kalasin Province to be a national park according to the National Park Act of 1961. Mr. Phanom Phongsuwan went to survey and find information and original history in the aforementioned national forest reserves along with finding additional information from related government agencies. The Computer Center of Khon Kaen University found that this area is the first water-loving forest area in Thailand. This is a royal initiative project of Her Majesty the Queen on December 20, 1982. Later in 1994, Mr. Phong Leng-ee, Director-General of the Royal Forest Department, inspected the area and saw its importance. He ordered the area to be surveyed as a national park, using the name Phu Pha Lek-Phu Pha Hak National Park. Later in 1996, approval was given to remove the word Phu Pha Hak and use the name “Phu Pha Lek National Park”.
From the survey of the conservation forest area to establish Phu Pha Lek National Park, the total area was approximately 419 square kilometers or 261,875 rai, with details as follows:
Sakon Nakhon Province has surveyed some conservation forest areas of Dong Panna National Forest Reserve and Dong Phra Chao National Forest Reserve in Tambon Tha Sila, Tambon Pathum Wapi, Tambon Song Dao, Amphoe Song Dao, covering an area of 37,250 rai, merging Phu Wong National Forest Reserve in Tambon Kham Bo. Tambon Waritchaphum, Tambon Kho Khieo, Wariphum District, area 67,600 rai, annexed to the national forest reserves of Kud Hai Forest, Na Nai Forest, Non Udom Forest, Nikhom Nam Un Subdistrict, Suwanna Kham Subdistrict, Nikhom Nam Un District, and Tambon Kud Hai, Kud Bak District, area 22,575 rai, annexed to the national forest reserves of Kaeng Khan Forest, Kud Bak Subdistrict, Kud Bak District, area 32,325 rai, total area 159,750 rai or approximately 255.6 square kilometers.
Udon Thani Province has surveyed some conservation forest areas of the national forest reserves of Bayao Forest, Hua Na Kham Forest, Na Yuang Forest, Nong Kung Thap Ma Forest, Nong Ya Sai Forest, in Tambon Phasuk, Wang Sam Mo District, Udon Thani Province, total area 10,315 rai (16.5 square kilometers).
Kalasin Province Surveys were conducted on some conservation forest areas of the Phu Phan National Reserve Forest, Na Tan Sub-district, Dip Chi Sub-district, Kham Muang District, covering an area of 86,185 rai, combined with the Kaeng Ka-am National Reserve Forest, Na Bon Sub-district, Saeng Badan Sub-district, Somdet District, covering an area of 5,625 rai, for a total area of 91,810 rai (146.9 square kilometers).
Later, on December 23, 2009, Phu Pha Lek National Park was announced as the 118th national park of Thailand, announced in the Royal Gazette, Volume 126, Section 96 Kor, dated December 23, 2009, covering an area of approximately 252,737 rai or 404.38 square kilometers.
