Thian Hock Keng in Singapore!
#2024wish
Thian Hock Keng is such an iconic masterpiece in Singapore due to its pivotal role back in 1800s. It’s dedicated for worshipping of Mazu, the Chinese sea goddess. This is also one of the oldest and most popular temples of the Hokkien people in Singapore. I visited the temple on a weekend afternoon and it was serene and peaceful. There’s a wall with information of history behind this temple. Interestingly, every statue, door, staircase has its own meaning. It's truly a nice experience of tranquility to visit this temple while admiring the delicate architectural details.

🇸🇬Buddha Tooth Relic Temple佛牙寺, Chinatown
#2024wish
This is one of the legendary temples in Singapore that attracts many visitors be it local or foreigner. It's said to have kept a tooth purportedly belongs to one of the most famous religious figures in history—the Buddha. The tooth is now kept at the fourth storey of the temple in the Sacred Light Chamber and it's only available for viewing within certain hours. Even if it's not for the Buddha's tooth, I would think that this temple worth a visit due to its design that is inspired by classical architecture from China’s Tang Dynasty and the principles of the Buddhist Mandala.

A Kopitiam experience: Toast Box Tiong Bahru☕️
#singapore
Toast Box has a latest outlet on Seng Poh Road, Tiong Bahru. Its design is intended to recreate the kopitiam experience with beautiful and open style concept. The retro ambiance is further enhanced by the vintage memorabilia and displays. They also serve a more expansive menu compared to the rest of the outlets. Some new items I noticed was the Lemon Cream Toast and Black Sesame Toast. Toast Box Coffee House is a wonderful spot that should not be missed if you are ever in the area.

🇸🇬Murals in Tiong Bahru, let’s get creative!

Tiong Bahru is a place that has no lack of pretty murals. There are a few that I could spot around the area such as the "Goat Family". It was so so adorable and it was just outside the Tiong Bahru market. The next one would be the "Peacock" which is in the Tiong Bahru market. This is an artwork by Australian artist Mike Makatron that covers a three-storey walls. It was such a nice scene to have interesting murals randomly spotted in this neighbourhood.

🇸🇬A walk through history:Fuk Tak Chi Museum

Fuk Tak Chi Museum is such a well preserved building. The entrance might look unassuming but it pesents a small yet instructive collection of artifacts, exhibits, and interactive displays that depict the lifestyles, traditions, and challenges faced by the Chinese community during Singapore's formative years. The miniature display of how life was in the 1820s is so so interesting which it recreated scenes of old Chinatown, traditional costumes, and learn about the customs and rituals of the early Chinese settlers. It is very educational and good to spend about 30 minutes here to walk through the history.

Tower of Sculpture-Sri Mariamman Temple,SG🇸🇬
#2024wish
I had a chance to visit Sri Mariamman during my solo city walk. Never would I have thought that this little temple sitting in Chinatown would be so marvelous. There is beautiful and colorful architecture with plenty of intricately designed details and it is best appreciated from up close. The temple's meticulous maintenance is truly commendable, it's extremely clean and the serene ambience within the temple grounds was captivating. Do note that visitors are required to remove their footwear and dress appropriately. It's very thoughtful of the temple to have outside for visitors to leave their footwear and saree for loan.

Tiong Bahru: A beautiful mix of old and new!
#singapore
Decided to do a city walk in Tiong Bahru neighbourhood after our breakfast. I like the vibes here! Tiong Bahru is the oldest housing estate in Singapore. I could see heritage mingles with the modern world when I visited this quaint community. I love walking past those beautiful low-rise apartments which were amongst the first public housing projects to be built in Singapore following the Second World War. Tiong Bahru is also now dotted with an abundance of hip cafes, indie boutiques and iconic wall murals, making it the hippest hood in Singapore!

Telok Ayer Green:A Park Amidst Old Shophouses
#singapore
Telok Ayer Green is a hidden green space sandwiched between two national monuments, the Thian Hock Keng temple and Nagore Durgha Shrine. One of the most notable features of Telok Ayer Green are statues depicting the early settlers who once lived in the area. Each statue in the park depicts a snapshot of the life of our ancestors in colonial history, from a Chinese street procession to a transaction between Indian settlers. Telok Ayer Green is also a great pitstop for me to take a break after a long cultural walk in this area and enjoy the serenity amidst the bustling streets.

Interestingly, this Indian Shrine is on the same street as the Chinese temple (Thian Hock Keng) and a Malay mosque (Al-Abrar Mosque), this shows the diverse culture existing harmoniously side by side in Singapore!

Fuk Tak Chi Museum brings you back to 1820!

I like this attraction on Telok Ayer Street the most! Although it’s a small one, but it’s so informative and educational offering a glimpse into the history and cultural heritage of the early Chinese immigrants in Singapore. The external facade is well preserved and distinctive from the more modern adjacent buildings. The most eye-catching display would be the 2 x 1,5 meter model, recreated scenes of old Chinatown, traditional costumes, and learn about the customs and rituals of the early Chinese settlers. Looking at this model really helps me to imagine how life was back in 1820s. There is so much to see from this model! Best of all, it’s free for entry for everyone! 💯

Located in Chinatown, Jamae Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in Singapore. I couldn’t believe this place has been in existence for over two hundred years ! What makes it stands out is its distinctive style of architecture which is a mix of Indo-Islamic. This is can be seen from the front gate which is typically South Indian, while the foyer, main prayer hall, ancillary prayer hall and shrine feature neoclassical elements.

🇸🇬Chinatown Murals: Heritage in Street Art
#singapore
It’s hard to not notice the pretty murals while walking around Chinatown. These colourful paintings captures scenes of yore on the walls of historic buildings. A few popular ones are ‘Mid Autumn Festival’ by Yip Yew Chong decorates the alley behind Lucky Chinatown. Another bigger one would be the ‘Wet Market’ which a giant teapot with tea is being poured out from the side of a building. It then extended to a plethora of scenes which tell a story of a visit to a wet market including services such as ear cleaning and hair braiding along the five-foot ways, shoppers picking up fresh vegetables and meat, the community get together and enjoy morning coffee in a Kopitiam. There are so many mores to be explored and admired!

What an amazing place to visit and I felt like I was transported to the Spanish Colonial period in the Philippines. When we were there there were a lot of ancestral house that were being restored or getting fixed so we weren't able to see the interior of the house. We were pressing for time as well. How I wished we had an entire day to walk and stroll around the village coz I really felt like I was living in the past while looking at the surrounding. I really hope this place gets the attention or tourists that it derseve. A lot of people only kno about Vigan and to be honest I was one of those until we were taken here by our family.

🇬🇧Sacred Urban Splendor⛪️🛐
#timetotravel
⛪️Majestically situated in the heart of Birmingham, St. Paul's Church is an architectural wonder that enchants and inspires anyone who sets foot within its grounds. Its imposing presence on St. Paul's Square makes it a timeless gem in the urban fabric.
I had the privilege of visiting this historic church on a bright autumn morning, and the experience was truly extraordinary. The limestone facade stood with an aura of grandeur, and the ornate entrance beckoned to discover a world of beauty and spirituality.
Once inside, the magnificence of St. Paul's Church emerged in all its glory. The colored stained glass filtered the sunlight, creating a mosaic of colors on the marble flooring. Intricate decorations and frescoes depicting sacred stories stood out against the walls, telling a millennia-old tale of faith and devotion.
The tranquility inside the church was palpable, and I felt enveloped by a sense of peace and reflection. The intricately carved wooden pews invited one to sit and contemplate, and so I did. I closed my eyes and allowed the distant sounds of the organ to fill my soul as I lost myself in my thoughts.
The history of St. Paul's Church is equally fascinating. Learning that this church had withstood fires and wars, preserving its beauty and spiritual significance, added profound meaning to my visit. It was a place that had witnessed generations of believers and visitors, a place that had weathered the storms of time.
In conclusion, my visit to St. Paul's Church was an experience I will never forget. This place is not only an extraordinary example of sacred architecture but also a haven for those seeking tranquility and reflection. It is a monument to beauty and spirituality that can be appreciated by people of all faiths and anyone in search of inspiration. If you find yourself in Birmingham, I highly recommend visiting this remarkable church.#TravelInspiration #birmingham #culturewalk #travel

Chew Jetty Journey
Initially, I wanted to make a post about Chew Jetty itself. But I was a bit disappointed by how lacking it was. Instead, I’ll talk about the journey from Armenian Street to Chew Jetty, as I did manage to find really interesting art and stores along the way.
The walk from Armenian Street to Chew Jetty is about 10 minutes. It’s not directly next to each other, but really close. Along the way you’ll see various street art and some traditional old school stores that sell bread and biscuits. The store in the first picture even sold herbal hard boiled eggs! Although it’s just a 10 minute walk, we spent about 30 minutes along the journey just shopping around and stopping to take pictures. Overall a really great experience as it was interesting to see and observe these things around us.
The jetty was interesting but not as impressive as I expected it to be. It’s rather small, and it isn’t really a jetty per se. More like a village standing on poles. The pathways were just planks nailed together and houses connected to these pathways only had a 20cm width worth of plank to balance across to get home. Besides that, there’s nothing else. The water has dried up and you can’t go down much further anyway.

Wat Paknam Bhasicharoen Temple
Wat Paknam Bhasicharoen is one of my favourite temples in Bangkok. The entire compound is stunning, with a rich cultural heritage, remarkable architecture and tranquil atmosphere.
One of the highlights is the breathtaking pagoda which is the most stunning spot that I have experienced in Thailand. The ceiling and the pagoda will mesmerise you. Both are incredibly beautiful!
Also, the big Buddha at Wat Paknam Bhasicharoen is incredible, it is one of the largest that I have seen so far.
If you are exploring Bangkok, Wat Paknam Bhasicharoen is a must-visit, it won’t disappoint you! Definitely it will give you a great escape from the bustling city.

A Treasure of History and Culture
The Itsukushima Otori Gate is a sight to behold. It’s truly one of the most amazing pieces of history that you’ll ever come across. This gate is HUGE. It is truly massive. And it’s one of those things that you wouldn’t be able to understand until you actually visit it.
I really enjoyed just being around it and talking to people about the history and cultural significance of it. This particular gate survived the atomic bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima in 1945. On top of that significant history pointer, this gate is also a key cultural piece that acts as a gate between the human and spirit world. This gate was built along with the shrine near the shore to worship the gods of the sea and storm. It’s truly a sight to behold.
