The windmills of Astypalea constitute a significant and impressive landmark of the island. They are located in the square of Chora (the main village of the island) and are part of the traditional architecture of the area.
The eight windmills are constructed from stone and wood and are imposing in size. They were built for milling wheat and other crops, harnessing the strong winds prevalent on the island.
