The Roman Baths

4.7/5
660 reviews

The Roman Baths is located in the center of Bath, opposite Bath Abbey. It is an attraction in Bath and also the origin of the city's name. This well-preserved Roman bathhouse is a place that draws endless streams of eager visitors. Stepping inside is like witnessing a living portrait of Roman-era life, featuring the sacred spring, Roman temple, Roman bathhouse andThe Roman BathsThe artifacts are quite famous. #Architectural features# The Victorian reception hall at the entrance is magnificent, with arched ceilings carved with scenes of the four seasons. Here, besides purchasing tickets, don't forget to pick up a free audio guide (available in Chinese). However, large luggage storage is not provided, so if needed, you can store bulky luggage elsewhere before exploring. The baths are divided into upper and lower levels. The lower-level pool is connected to an underground hot spring, with emerald-green water that remains warm to this day, bubbling up continuously. It's hard to imagine it has maintained this state for over 10,000 years. The upper and lower levels of the baths are supported by 12 pillars, each topped with statues of varying forms, as the Romans believed the godlike hot springs were a gift from divine protection. From the reception hall, you can proceed to the terrace, which offers a panoramic view of the Great Bath, surrounded by Victorian-era statues dating back to 1894. Take a moment here to admire the overall grandeur of the Great Bath. #Sacred spring# The sacred spring is located at the heart of The Roman Baths, with natural water maintaining a constant temperature of 46°C. Water gushes from underground day and night, with excess flowing into the original Roman drainage system. The museum features a glass floor, allowing visitors to clearly see the bath's water pipes below, which also house treasures like carved gemstones and tin masks, well worth a look. #Great bath# The Great Bath is the highlight for most visitors. This massive pool is lined with 45 lead slabs and has a depth of 1.6 m. Steps are installed around it for easy access. The pool is filled with abundant spring water, its surface steaming. A large stone slab lies horizontally where the hot spring flows out, serving as a diving platform for entertainment in ancient times. From 10:00 to 17:00 daily and during July and August evenings, staff dress in ancient Roman attire, immersing visitors in the distant Roman era. The Great Bath is flanked by the East Bath and West Bath, along with bathing suites and a high-temperature bath. For more historical insights, visit The Roman Baths Museum, which houses composite models of the temple and baths, as well as exhibits of comedy films related to ancient Rome.

Thermae Bath Spa is a modern natural thermal spa and one of the few places in the United Kingdom where you can bathe in natural, mineral-rich thermal waters. The spa's water is sourced from the same natural hot springs deep beneath Bath that the ancient Romans used when they built their baths here 2,000 years ago. The main building, the New Royal Bath, incorporates modern design elements such as glass, stone, and water features into the historic spa architecture. The highly anticipated open-air rooftop pool is located on the top floor. While soaking in the mineral-rich warm water, you can overlook the skyline of Bath's honey-colored Georgian architecture and the rolling hills in the distance. The large indoor thermal pool is named after the Roman goddess Minerva and is built surrounded by stone columns. The spa also features a separate historic building, the Cross Bath, which is built over the site of an ancient Roman reservoir and supplied by its own natural spring, offering a more intimate and quiet atmosphere in its open-air oval thermal pool.

Pulteney Bridge

Pulteney Bridge

The Avon River originating in southwest England nourishes the fertile soil of the small town of Bath. On the banks of the Pulteney Bridge, the river's turbulent southward gesture has also become a beautiful scenery in this delicate town. Pulteney Bridge is a stone three-arch bridge. Although it spans both sides of the Avon River, it is more like a bridgehead. It is only surrounded by brick walls and has no open-air form. There are no tea rooms, cafes, and souvenir shops. It is a good way to pass the time by listening to the sound of rushing water on the stone fence full of bird droppings. The west bank of Pulteney Bridge is a good place for tourists to take pictures. In addition to the rigid and soft Avon River, seagulls and waterfowl, this is also a relatively broad lookout platform before entering the narrow core scenic area of Bath city. Before the essence of the city of springs is revealed, please have a good brewing here.

Stonehenge

On the Salisbury Plain southeast of Bath, England, numerous stone circles stand amidst the vast wilderness—this is the mysterious prehistoric site of Stonehenge in the British Isles. In 1130 AD, a British priest accidentally discovered Stonehenge during a journey. These majestic stones, with an average weight of nearly 30 tons, still puzzle researchers today regarding their arrangement and exact purpose. On the way to the prehistoric Stonehenge, signs are posted along the route, and railings surround the site, allowing visitors to view it from a distance of 30 m. Research suggests its construction spanned over a thousand years: approx. 3000 BC, ancient people built embankments here, creating a circular earthwork with 56 pits arranged inside; by approx. 2500 BC, the massive stones were gradually transported and erected. The main sandstone blocks were sourced from the Marlborough Downs, approx. 30 km away, with each averaging approx. 25 tons, and the heel stone weighing approx. 30 tons. The smaller bluestones came from the Preseli Hills in Wales, over 200 km away. The fact that such transportation was accomplished without metal tools or wheels still astonishes researchers today.

The park features many facilities, including a skate park, tennis courts, a bowling green, 12-hole and 18-hole golf courses and putting greens, a swimming pool, open-air concerts, and a popular children's playground. In southwest England, this botanical garden is one of the most notable for its collection of limestone-loving plants. The park is filled with towering ancient trees and lush green lawns, dotted with flower beds, monuments, and an open-air stage. The lush, unmanicured vegetation creates a natural, wild charm, typical of an English garden.

Originally built in the 1st century AD (during the Roman occupation of Britain), it was constructed around natural geothermal springs and dedicated to Sulis Minerva, the goddess of Celtic and Roman fusion. It served as a religious sanctuary, a spa resort, and a public bath for all. After the Roman withdrawal in the 4th century, it was gradually buried and excavated in the 18th century. Today, it is a World Heritage Site and a landmark of Bath.

A very historical town. The car shuttled through the streets and alleys of Bath, and it turned out that this is the hometown of "Jane Austen", the female writer who wrote "Pride and Prejudice". Simple, beautiful, leisurely, peaceful, elegant and quiet. It can only be said that it is difficult to describe its beauty. very nice. There are many tourists, but it is very orderly. The air is also very good. It felt nice to take a quiet walk.

Bath's most famous attraction is also one of the most magnificent Georgian buildings in the UK. The Crescent Building is a group of 30 connected houses. It looks like a crescent moon from the distant mountains, and it echoes the circus, which represents the sun. There is a lawn for tourists and local residents to rest and play. House No. 1 is a museum (don't go if you don't want to go), two houses in the middle have been converted into hotels (very expensive), and the rest are private property. It's very beautiful when the sun is full~

I enjoyed a day at Thermea! It’s true … this is not a quiet spa! But we didn’t mind that as we like to chat as well. At other spas we’ve been to there is little or quiet chatter and people are often asked to stay quiet. At Thermea guests can get pretty loud in the hot springs or by the fire. We enjoyed a couple of sessions, like stretching and concentration. We really loved how these were offered to us. There is one steam room available for use and the other one is for an extra co
