Grand-Place of Brussels
No. 2 of Best Things to Do in Belgium

Grand-Place of Brussels

7.4
4.6/5
598 reviews
Grand-Place of Brussels is the urban heart of Brussels and was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1998. The square is rectangular, approx. 100 m long and nearly 70 m wide, and is paved with granite. Most of the surrounding buildings were built in the late 17th century and still preserve their original appearance, bringing together a variety of architectural styles including Gothic, Baroque, and Louis XIV. One of the striking buildings on the square is the Brussels Town Hall, a typical Gothic building that reached its current scale after multiple expansions and renovations. The top of its spire is decorated with a sculpture of Saint Michael slaying a demon. The building with spires opposite the Town Hall is known as the "King's House" and now houses the Brussels City Museum. The gilded bronze statue of Everard 't Serclaes in a corner of the square is also worth noting; it commemorates the Brussels folk hero Everard 't Serclaes and depicts the scene of his death. Other buildings surrounding the square mostly belonged to historical guilds, and the facade of each guild building is decorated with sculptures of figures revered by the guild or symbolic animals. During the day, you can savor the beauty of the architecture. After nightfall, when the lights come on, the murals and carvings on the buildings shine brilliantly under the illumination, making it a great place for night photography.Brussels · 398m from downtown

Manneken Pis is one of the symbols of Brussels. This bronze statue stands in a niche on a street corner in the old town, depicting a little boy with his hands on his hips, urinating into a basin. Its history dates back to the mid-15th century, and it was redesigned and cast by sculptor Duquesnoy in 1619. The statue currently standing in the original spot is a later replica, while the original is preserved in the City Museum near the Grand Place. It is only about 0.5m tall, much smaller than many tourists imagine, yet it is considered a symbol of Brussels along with the Atomium and the Grand Place, and is packed year-round with tourists holding cameras.Brussels · 606m from downtown

Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula is the cathedral of Brussels. It is built with light-colored stone, and its two towering towers form a striking facade that blends Brabantine Gothic architectural style. The interior is spacious, featuring tall pointed arches, exquisite stained-glass windows, carved decorations, and religious artworks. Sunlight streams through the stained glass into the hall, creating a solemn and dignified atmosphere. The stained glass here depicts biblical stories and religious figures, which is an artistic feature worth noting. As an important venue for Catholic religious activities, masses and ceremonies are also held here.Brussels · 651m from downtown

The Fiftieth Anniversary Park is a large urban park. Most of the buildings around the park were built by the order of King Leopold II of Belgium to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Belgian independence. Walking in the park, no matter the overall style, or the details of the structure can be carefully pondered. The historical background park is located in the eastern part of Brussels' European Quarter and was built in 1880. Walking through the park, you can see the huge Arc de Triomphe in the middle. It was designed by architect Giro and built in 1905. Its volume is comparable to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris and Rome. The semicircular arc cloisters on both sides lead to the National Museum and the Military Museum. Walking through the park, there are green trees, fountains, and the air is fresh and pleasant. You can see many locals walking and jogging here, which is a leisurely and pleasant scene.Brussels · 2.9km from downtown

In summer, the palace is open to the public and can be visited inside. The Royal Palace is located in front of the Brussels Park, and the central axis of the park passes through the Royal Palace and the Belgian Federal Parliament on the other side. These two opposing buildings represent the Belgian polity - the constitutional monarchy. Standing at the Royal Palace can also overlook the scenery of the entire Brussels Park. Every summer, from the end of July to September, the palace is open to the public, and visitors can enter and visit the emperor's rooms, art galleries, conference rooms and valuable collections inside.Brussels · 1.2km from downtown

Manneken Pis is a modern fountain statue on the Grand Place in Brussels, built to echo the well-known Manneken Pis statue. The pissing girl statue is located on the other side of the square opposite the peeing statue, and is hidden deep in the alley - the east side of the Faith Lane (Impassedela Fidelité/Getrouwheidsgang), so it is more difficult to find. This half-meter-high statue made of blue-gray limestone vividly depicts a girl with two braids squatting and urinating in a comfortable manner. At the same time, in order to better protect the statue, iron bars were also set up.Brussels · 263m from downtown

The European Parliament is the EU's legislative, oversight and advisory body and is the only directly elected parliamentary body. In fact, it is an ordinary high-rise building. Together with many EU buildings, you can see the national flags of many countries. If you want to enter, you need to go to the European Parliament Visitor Center, otherwise you can only look at the exterior. If you want to visit inside, you can join the guided tour organized by the European Parliament Visitor Center. You can experience the day of parliamentarians through various multimedia dynamic displays, feel the serious and tense atmosphere, suit suits, black office cars, take-away coffee, and even Familiar faces that often appear on TV can be seen. St. Michael and St. Gudula Cathedral is one of the most comfortable churches I’ve ever visited. The lighting is soft and pleasant, and the choir singing in the background adds a peaceful touch. The interior isn’t overly fancy, which have a nice balance between simplicity and decoration. One of the best churches.

It's a long, spacious park on the main street between the Grand Place and the residential area. If you walk through it, you'll arrive at the Merode metro station. There's a large lawn, a fountain, and the Triumphal Arch near the exit is also worth seeing. It's perfect for a walk or a picnic.

I have seen the Royal palace from outside. The flag was out which means that the King was currently there. The area is so beautiful, and the street in front of the royal palace is old style for when there are big royal event and parades. Totally with visiting!

This is a very large park. I think it should be the largest park in Brussels. Although I didn't see any flowers blooming when I came here, the park is lush and green, and it is very beautiful. There are also many people walking and exercising in the park.

The Manneken Pissing Girl is also an important hero of Belgium. Compared with the story of the peeing boy, it is also an internationally famous historical event. The year-round flowing water is also the main place for tourists to take pictures here, and tour groups will move freely around here.

I highly recommend the Brussels Museum of Fine Arts. Although it is not as famous as the museums in Paris, only Paris can rival it. It is very compact to arrange a half-day. There are the most abundant collections of Bruegel, works of Titian from all periods, as well as works by Vermeer, Caravaggio, Dürer, Rembrandt and other masters.
