Hengdian World Studios

Hengdian World Studios is located in Hengdian Town, Dongyang, in central Zhejiang Province, adjacent to Yiwu, which is famous for its small commodity market. It is one of the largest film and television shooting bases in China and is known as "China's Hollywood." It is not actually a single city, but rather composed of multiple attractions scattered throughout and around the town, such as the Qin Palace, Ming and Qing Palace Garden, Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival, Guangzhou Street/Hong Kong Street, and Dream Valley. Qin and Han palaces, Song Dynasty streets, Ming and Qing palaces, and modern trading ports are all gathered in one town, making walking through it feel like traveling back and forth between different dynasties. Films such as "Hero," "The Promise," and "Curse of the Golden Flower" were born in the Qin Palace, while hit palace dramas like "Palace," "Empresses in the Palace," and "Scarlet Heart" were mostly filmed in the Ming and Qing Palace Garden. It is a unique daily scene here to frequently bump into film crews at work on the streets and see extras dressed in ancient costumes passing by. Each attraction has distinct highlights: The Qin palace was built for filming "The emperor and the assassin," featuring imposing high platforms and grand halls—the iconic sword duel scene from "Hero" was shot here, now adapted into the live stunt show "Heroes' duel." The riverside scene at Qingming festival attraction brings Zhang Zeduan's Northern Song Bianliang to life, with rainbow bridges, Bian river, and Song-dressed NPCs roaming among taverns and teahouses; its signature performance "Dream of Bianliang" recreates bustling street life through ancient magic tricks. The Ming-Qing palace emulates Beijing's forbidden city with layered vermilion walls and golden roofs—familiar sights for fans of Qing dynasty dramas—while the multimedia show "Forbidden city chronicles" condenses centuries of imperial history. Guangzhou street·Hong Kong street revives old Canton and colonial Hong Kong (1840s-early 20th century), featuring the lively aquatic action show "Raging sea rivalry." Other areas include Dazhi temple, Pingyan cave dwellings, and Chinese cultural park—each offering unique exploration. The attractions are some distance apart, so you can usually only visit two or three in a day. If you have enough time, consider staying overnight: explore palaces and encounter film crews during the day, then head to the dream valley themed around nightlife in the evening. Besides amusement facilities, it features live performances, "The dream of Taiji" and "Mountain torrents", which are the highlights of Hengdian at night. The film studio has so many attractions that a 1-day tour may only cover 2-3 attractions. If time permits, we recommend staying overnight to explore at a leisurely pace and catch more shows—only then can you truly experience the charm of Hengdian.Dongyang · 16.7km from downtown

The Shuanglong Cave Scenic Spot features a water-filled karst cave. The name Shuanglong, which translates to double dragon, comes from the stalactites resembling dragon heads that guard the entrance to the cave. The cave's outer entrance is warm in the winter and cool in summer. Visitors can gladly escape from the outside heat when visiting in the summer. To enter the cave's interior, visitors must lie down in a boat that travels through the stalactites. It's an exciting and unforgettable experience.Jinhua · 12.1km from downtown

Zhuge Bagua village is located in Zhuge town, Lanxi city, Jinhua, Zhejiang province. It is a settlement of Zhuge Liang's descendants, with nearly 4,000 of them still living in the village today. Built by Zhuge Liang's descendants during the Yuan dynasty, the village follows a nine-palace and eight-trigrams layout: centered around Zhongchi pond, which is half water and half land resembling a taiji symbol, eight alleys extend outward to form the "inner eight trigrams," while eight surrounding hills form the "outer eight trigrams." The winding alleys are interconnected. [Cultural relics and honors] The village preserves over 200 ancient buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties. In 1996, the residential buildings in Zhuge Eight-Diagrams Village and Changle Village were designated as national key cultural relics protection units by the State Council. The ancestor worship rituals of Zhuge descendants and the traditional residential construction techniques of Wuzhou (ancient village construction techniques of Zhuge Eight-Diagrams Village) were included in the national intangible cultural heritage list. Zhuge Eight-Diagrams Village is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction and one of the first national research and practice education bases for primary and secondary school students. In 2019, it was selected as one of the first national key rural tourism villages. [Main highlights] Prime minister ancestral hall (Zhuge clan ancestral hall, where spring sacrifices are held on the 14th day of the fourth lunar month and fall sacrifices on the 28th day of the eighth lunar month), Bell Pond, Dagong hall (memorial hall for Zhuge Liang), Tianyi hall and Dajing hall (exhibition of traditional Chinese medicine culture), Yongmu hall, and Shangtang ancient commercial street. [Recommended for] Travelers seeking less crowded cultural heritage sites with profound history can explore Ming and Qing dynasty architecture clusters, ancestral temple rituals, Zhuge family precepts, and intangible cultural heritage of ancestor worship. Visiting on a working day or shortly after opening offers a quieter experience. Families from Jiangsu, Zhejiang, or Shanghai traveling with elders can complete the main route in about half a day, taking shuttle buses to the core area with discounted tickets for seniors. For a culturally enriching family-friendly trip with children, learn about the Nine Palaces and Eight Trigrams layout, Zhuge family precepts, and traditional Chinese medicine culture. Weekend self-drive trips from Zhejiang (approximately 2 hours from Hangzhou) are convenient, with a parking lot available at the attraction. [Transportation] Self-drive: Approx. 2 hrs from Hangzhou. High-speed rail: Take the Jinhua-Jiande high-speed rail to Lanxi East Station (approx. 76 mins from Hangzhou West Station), then take a taxi or car rental to your destination. Free admission for reciting classics: Visitors aged 13 and under who recite "Admonitions to my son" within 2 minutes, or visitors over 13 who recite "Memorial on sending out the troops" within 8 minutes, can get free admission tickets. Excludes Labor Day, Mid-Autumn Festival, National Day, and Spring Festival holidays. See preferential policy for details.Lanxi · 16.5km from downtown

Located south of Hengdian World Studios, the Qingming Shanghe Attraction is a film and television studio based on the classic Northern Song Dynasty painting "Along the River During the Qingming Festival" by Zhang Zeduan. Popular films and television series such as "Gu Jian Qi Tan," "The Flying Dagger of Xiao Li," and "Peerless Twins" have been filmed here. Therefore, while visiting the area, you can not only experience the bustling capital and urban life of the Song Dynasty, but also discover familiar scenes from historical dramas in the streets and alleys. If you're lucky, you might even stumble upon a film crew in progress. The Attraction is divided into an outer city and an inner city. The winding Bian River winds through the city walls, and Northern Song Dynasty-style bridges and pavilions stretch along the waterfront, creating a poetic and picturesque scene. Most of these buildings are empty, allowing visitors to enjoy the "time-travel" experience of strolling through the streets of Bianjing. You can enjoy snacks from small shops along the street, or play a game like Northern Song Dynasty darts. For an even more "time-traveling" experience, rent a Northern Song Dynasty costume and pose for photos in it, then continue your stroll until the end, completely immersing yourself in the Song Dynasty surroundings. The recommended order of the tour is: enter the Attraction through the main gate, pass Gao Mansion and Chen Mansion, take a standard photo of the Rainbow Bridge and its reflection in the water, follow the central axis through Shangshan Gate and enter the inner city to Sunyangzheng Store. A short distance ahead is the performance venue of "A Dream of Bianliang". Follow the trail counterclockwise around the lake, then return to the outer city through the Water Gate and continue walking counterclockwise. The entire tour can be walked, or you can rent a bicycle if necessary. Along the River During the Qingming Festival is adjacent to the Qin Palace and Dream Valley. A day trip to the two attractions is perfect, followed by a night out at Dream Valley. Buses Round-trip between each attraction, making transportation very convenient.Dongyang · 18km from downtown

The Underground River is located 8 km east of Lanxi and is also known as "Liudong Mountain". It is particularly famous for two attractions: The Underground River and Qixia Garden. In the attraction, an underground river over 1 km long runs through it, with water flowing year-round, and its source remains unknown to this day. Taking a boat ride along the underground river inside the karst cave is the unique feature and highlight of visiting the attraction. The cave sightseeing area can be explored either on foot or by boat. It's quite interesting to observe the surrounding stalactites hanging upside down from the boat. Moreover, the admission ticket already includes the boat fee, so it's worth giving it a try. The entire boat ride covers approx. 800 m. After disembarking, you can exit the cave via the stone steps, with many uniquely shaped stalactites to admire along the way. Not far from the attraction, the ancestral home of the renowned socialite Miss Zhao Si, Qixia Garden, is located in Dongyuan Village. This Qing Dynasty Huizhou-style brick-and-wood structure displays historical materials and stories about Miss Zhao Si and General Zhang Xueliang. If interested, you can visit.Lanxi · 7.7km from downtown

Niutou Mountain National Forest Park

Niutou Mountain National Forest Park is located 60 km outside Wuyi. Known as the "Little Jiuzhaigou of Jiangnan," it features steep cliffs, streams, and emerald pools, offering some scenic charm—though it falls slightly short compared to Jiuzhaigou. Due to limited public transport, most visitors arrive by car, so crowds are never too large. From the main gate to the core scenic area is about a 5 km drive. Visitors can drive to the parking lot at the mountain base, or take one of the three daily free shuttle buses running round-trip between the main gate and the parking lot. Nearby the parking lot are a restaurant and Shanli Renjia Hotel, while the hot spring hotel near the entrance offers better amenities, including hot spring baths—ideal for an overnight stay if time allows. To the left of the parking lot is the trail leading to Wangniufeng Peak in the back mountain. If arriving in the afternoon and staying overnight, consider hiking here, soaking in the hot springs at night, and exploring the main attractions the next day: heading right to Shimen Gorge entrance, climbing Tianshi Peak, visiting Tianshi Temple, and crossing the Golden Lock Bridge. From Shimen Gorge entrance past Yuxian Lake to Qixi Bridge, the path is mostly straightforward, with clear pools and streams along the way, making for a pleasant walk. Beyond Qixi Bridge is a fork—both routes lead up to Tianshi Peak and Tianshi Temple, with one for ascending and the other descending. The left path features a thrilling cliffside boardwalk leading to the Golden Lock Bridge. Continuing past a narrow cliff passage ("One-Line Sky") brings you to the peak and Tianshi Temple. The boardwalk clings dramatically to the mountainside, offering sweeping views of the Golden Lock Bridge spanning two cliffs and the imposing Tianshi Peak—a spectacular photo spot. Though the bridge looks daunting, it's sturdy and safe to cross. The steep One-Line Sky climb is challenging, but the panoramic summit views make it worthwhile. Tianshi Temple at the top allows for blessings (possibly at an extra fee). The ascent takes about 2 hours and is tiring, but the descent is gentler, taking just over an hour back to Qixi Bridge. Restrooms are available on the mountain, but shops are scarce, so bring water and snacks. Near the park entrance, Shenniu Gorge Rafting (¥128/person, for reference) is a thrilling summer activity—3 km of fast-flowing rapids through deep gorges. Rafting usually starts around 1 PM, so it's best to hike in the morning and raft in the afternoon.Wuyi · 39.9km from downtown

Hengdian World Studios - The Palace of Emperor Qin

6.1
4.9/5
11.8k reviews
The Palace of Emperor Qin is located in Hengdian World Studios, built in 1997 for renowned director Chen Kaige's historical epic film "The Emperor and the Assassin." This attraction can be considered the cradle of numerous blockbuster films and historical dramas, with nearly a hundred productions filmed here, including "Hero," "A Step into the Past," "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor," "Beauty's Rival in Palace," "The Promise," "The Legend of Mi Yue," "The Untamed," "Joy of Life," "One and Only," "Luoyang," "Chinese Paladin 3," "The Empress of China," and "Nirvana in Fire." The Palace of Emperor Qin is modeled after the main palace of the Qin Dynasty—Xianyang Palace. This massive attraction features intricate architecture and meticulous layout, boasting 27 majestic palaces with towers at every turn. The towering walls and grand halls perfectly capture the awe-inspiring ambition of Emperor Qin Shi Huang in unifying the six warring states and establishing China's first empire. The main attraction of the site is the Hall of Four Seas United as One, divided into the front hall, middle hall, and rear hall, stretching over 120 meters in depth. Majestic and towering, this was where the Qin emperor held court and conducted state affairs. It served as a filming location for Zhang Yimou's movie "Hero" and the popular Hong Kong TV series "A Step into the Past." Today, visitors can dress in costumes and sit on the throne for photos (fee required). The central area of the hall has been transformed into a massive wishing pool by the attraction, glittering with coins tossed in by visitors. In front of the hall, actors perform daily reenactments of the First Emperor's coronation procession on the 99-step staircase. The East View Tower next to the Hall of Unification was once the filming location for the movie "Hero." Inside the West View Tower, you can watch "Dreaming Back to Qin and Han." Additionally, at the Dragon Emperor's Adventure Theater near the West Palace Gate, you can experience the 4D film "Dragon Emperor's Adventure," which is based on the thrilling plot of the Hollywood movie "The Mummy 3." Additionally, to the west of The Palace of Emperor Qin stands the Huayang Terrace, the palace of the Yan Kingdom, which contrasts sharply in style with The Palace of Emperor Qin. This makes the filming site at The Palace of Emperor Qin not only a representation of Qin and Jin culture but also a showcase of Yan and Zhao architectural styles. One site, two palaces, highly condensed. Next to the Huayang Terrace is "Han Street," fully displaying the street scenes of the Qin and Han periods. However, both attractions are designated filming zones for production crews and are usually closed to visitors. Of course, if you're lucky, you might even spot a few celebrities.Dongyang · 18.6km from downtown

The Guangzhou Street and Hong Kong Street Attraction is one of the six classic Attraction in Hengdian Film and Television City. It is the first Attraction built in Hengdian Film and Television City. It was built in August 1996 for the filming of the historical blockbuster "The Opium War". With realistic real-life buildings, it artistically reproduces the old appearance of Guangzhou and the charm of Hong Kong around 1840. Guangzhou Street covers an area of more than 300 mu, and Hong Kong Street covers an area of 120 mu. The quaint streets and alleys dot the "Flower City", and old-fashioned locomotives lie on the weathered rails. The crisscrossing rivers flow into the "Pearl River". The "Thirteen Barbarians Pavilion" is like an international architectural exposition, and the world's first teahouse "Tianlan Pavilion" is a collection of pavilions and terraces, showing the elegance of Chinese architecture. The entire layout of Hong Kong Street is designed with the advantages of wilderness slopes, and there are many street scenes in the central urban area of Hong Kong in the 19th century, such as Queen's Road, Hong Kong Governor's House, Victoria Barracks, HSBC Bank, Shanghai Mansion, and Hehan Garden. There are more than 30 European-style buildings here: Pedder Street, Chater Street, Connaught Road, Queen's Road, Queen's Statue Square, Governor's House, St. John's Church, Dent & Co., and Victoria Barracks, etc., which constituted the "Victoria City" which was the political, economic and cultural center of Hong Kong at that time. The night view of Hong Kong Street is located in the Victoria Harbor area of the Hong Kong Street District Attraction Area of Guangzhou Street in Hengdian World Studios. Des Voeux Road, Pedder Street, Queen's Road, Connaught Road and Chater Street Loop have created a complex of buildings that are very much in the style of old Hong Kong in the 19th century, and incorporate film and television scenes, gourmet snacks, entertainment bars, trendy businesses, performances, skits and more. Time travel is not just about seeing the 19th century Hong Kong-style themed buildings, but also about being truly in a lifelike movie-like street scene. At night, the entire Hong Kong city area is illuminated by colorful neon lights, turning it into a movie-themed city that never sleeps. Amid the rickshaw drivers' evasive sounds, we walked through the streets full of various characters and came to the Guangxiang Street Film and Television Theme Hotel where we stayed at night. If you love Hu Ge, Wang Kai, and Jin Dong, the three handsome Ming brothers, you can stay in the "The Disguiser" film and television theme room; and if you are obsessed with the "Qi Yue" CP in "The Mystic Nine", you can just check in to the CP sweet spot of Xinyue Hotel - Yin Xinyue's boudoir.Dongyang · 14km from downtown

The Luzhai Complex consists of multiple residential complexes with longitudinal axes and thousands of houses. According to the essence of Suedang, its architectural scale and exquisite decoration are top notch. There are many existing buildings from the time of Jingtai back to the beginning of the Warlord Era, and they are concentrated on both sides of the axis of Suojutang. The official residence of Sangtangtang Hall is meticulously structured and symmetrical. It is an outstanding representation of ancient architecture. In the Luzhai architectural complex, paintings, corbels, and harpies from different periods are all of the highest quality.Dongyang · 3km from downtown

My group of friends took a day trip from Hangzhou to Hengdian World Studios (China’s “Hollywood”). We visited 3 film sets / palaces in 1 day in the following order: 明清宫苑 (Ming Qing Palace), 秦王宫 (Qin Palace), 清明上河图 (Along the river during the Qingming festival). We watched the following programs: Ming dynasty style wedding, Horse riding show, a 4D experience ride, Sword fight & Wire-Fu (scenes from movie “Hero”), Acrobatics, special firework show at night on the river: 打铁花 (Intangible cultural heritage: Striking Iron Flower).

Mr. Ye Shengtao's travelogue about Shuanglong Cave has been included in elementary school textbooks, attracting a large number of tourists. Actually, Shuanglong Cave itself is quite ordinary for a karst cave, but the waterfalls in Binghu Cave and Xianpu Cave are relatively rare in karst caves and worth seeing. The park also contains Chaozhen Cave, one of the 36 Taoist grottoes. The Huang Daxian Ancestral Temple is also worth a visit for Taoist believers.

The village was settled by descendants of Zhuge Liang during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period when they were appointed magistrates in Lanxi. Nestled deep in the mountains, the village was designed and built according to the Bagua (Eight Trigrams) principles, and is predominantly inhabited by people with the surname Zhuge. The quaint, traditional courtyard houses are very rustic and charming. Highly recommended. By the way, don't take the electric carts at the entrance of the scenic area; it's just a short walk, and there's absolutely no need to waste money.

Personally, I thought it was quite fun. The NPCs in the park were great, the interactions were fantastic, and you could earn rewards. There was also plenty of food inside, and everyone in the park was very friendly. However, when it came time to redeem our rewards after the fun, those two people were like ghosts. They barely acknowledged us when we asked them anything. We didn't have enough rewards to exchange for something, and there were so many people. There was a sign saying that posting on WeChat Moments, Douyin, or Xiaohongshu could get you 10 rewards, but I wouldn't have known if I hadn't seen others doing it. I understand they must be tired after serving so many tourists all day, but that's their job, there's no way around it. If you choose this service job, you have to be enthusiastic. I had a great day, thinking the whole park was wonderful, but it was ruined by those two people at the entrance. I was very disappointed. Even the cleaning ladies inside were more enthusiastic than them.

The scenic area is easy to find, with plenty of parking. It's really comfortable to visit in the summer. When taking the boat, there are signs indicating when to bend over to avoid bumping your head, and the entire boat ride is very comfortable and cool. The water in the underground river is very clean and clear. The stalactites in the cave are beautiful, and each attraction is labeled with its resemblance to something. There were also women picking up litter along the way. There are stone benches for tourists to rest on, and police officers are available to help inside the cave. Walking through the entire scenic area is a bit tiring. The exit is halfway up the mountain, and after that, it becomes a bit desolate. The descent is a quiet and pleasantly shady path, perfect for a summer visit!

Wuyi Niutou Mountain is perfect for a weekend family hike to escape the summer heat! The mountains are lush and green, and the temperature is much cooler than in the city. Streams murmur, and the air is incredibly fresh. We chose to hike up and take the cable car down, a perfect pace that wasn't too tiring. The "One Line Sky" is particularly unique, and the boardwalk offers expansive mountain views with stunning vistas. The high forest coverage and lush greenery, combined with the relatively low crowds, made for a comfortable hike. The trails are well-maintained, allowing children to enjoy the natural scenery and connect with nature. Highly recommended for a short trip around the Jiangsu and Zhejiang area!

A very nice place to visit and definitely worth the ticket price! The place is HUGE, so you’ll need a full day to explore all the attractions. Buggy rentals are available, but you’ll need to rent them separately at each scenic area, which can be quite pricey. Be prepared for lots of walking if you decide not to rent one! Overall, it’s a great place to visit and worth the experience. ✨

The place felt a bit old-fashioned when I went during a heavy rain. The atmosphere was still there, but it felt noticeably quiet. If it weren't raining, I could stroll around more and find plenty of food, shops, and entertainment options. It's similar to some food and beverage options in Shanghai and other areas, including Guangzhou.
