The Columbus Monument is located at the end of La Rambla near the port of Barcelona. Built in 1886 for the Universal Exposition and to commemorate Columbus's monumental voyage, the monument stands approximately 60 meters tall and is constructed of reddish-brown marble. The statue of Columbus atop the monument measures about 7 meters high, offering a commanding view of Barcelona's harbor.
The monument features five goddesses carved in mid-flight on its body, with the Spanish inscriptions "Gloria a Colón" (Glory to Columbus) and "Honor a Colón" (Honor to Columbus) prominently displayed above. Eight stone lions stand guard at the base, exuding solemnity and grandeur.
The statue of Columbus on the monument stands resolute, with his right arm raised high as he gazes into the distance, evoking the heroic spirit with which he once braved hardships to look out across the Atlantic. In 1493, Columbus returned in triumph, and Barcelona became the first place to hear his announcement of the discovery of the New World and his descriptions of its wondrous new lands. This made the monument's construction a widely anticipated event, and it has since become one of Barcelona's iconic symbols.
From the top of the tower, you can enjoy panoramic views of Barcelona's harbor and La Rambla. At sunset, the Columbus Monument and its surroundings become even more enchanting, making it a must-see sight.
