"Charming Western Hunan" is a large-scale ethnic folk song and dance drama that is performed year-round in the Wulingyuan Scenic Area of Zhangjiajie, Hunan Province, and is hailed as Zhangjiajie's "cultural calling card". It is far more than a simple song and dance performance; it is a visual and auditory feast that offers an in-depth experience of the mysterious and unique ethnic culture of the Western Hunan region.
Key Highlights and Features
Rich ethnic cultural core
The performance is rooted in the millennia-old history and traditions of the Tujia, Miao, Bai, and Yao ethnic minorities in western Hunan. It is not just a performance, but a vivid cultural classroom, bringing the daily lives, ancient legends, religious beliefs, and marriage customs of the local people to the stage through artistic techniques.
A unique model combining indoor and outdoor spaces
This is a major feature of "Charming Xiangxi"—the performance is divided into two parts:
Indoor venue (main theater): Relying on advanced stage technology and gorgeous lighting and sound, it presents a large-scale song and dance program with a grand scale and strong storytelling.
Outdoor Performance (Plaza Show): After the indoor performance, move to the outdoor plaza to watch authentic folk stunt performances. The content is more thrilling and interactive, such as "climbing a mountain of knives" (barefoot climbing a ladder of knives) and "walking through a sea of fire" (barefoot walking on red-hot iron plates), which are truly immersive and breathtaking.
Classic must-see signature programs
The performance brought together many classic programs that have been refined over time and are deeply loved by the audience:
"Chasing Love from the Tower of Longing": Adapted from the Tujia ethnic group's "climbing the tower" marriage proposal custom, it blends acrobatics, dance, and comedy elements, making it humorous and lively. It was once featured on CCTV's Spring Festival Gala.
"Maogus Dance": Known as a "living fossil of Chinese dance", the dancers are covered in straw and recreate the production and life scenes of ancient people, full of primitive and wild power.
"Border Town": Adapted from the novel of the same name by literary master Shen Congwen, it beautifully portrays the poignant love story between Cuicui and the two brothers, Tianbao and Nuosong.
The exhibition of secrets of western Hunan cleverly presents mysterious elements that have a wide range of curiosity from the outside world, such as "corpse driving in western Hunan" and "witchcraft culture," in an artistic form, satisfying the audience's curiosity.
A powerful cast and stunning audiovisual effects
The performance boasts a large cast, with professional and passionate actors. Combined with modern stage design, stunning lighting, and surround sound, it creates a highly impactful and captivating stage effect, offering an exceptional audiovisual experience.
