Island of Tearsis an artificial island on the Svislach River in the center of Minsk, built to commemorate the Belarusian soldiers who died in the war in Afghanistan. Mothers who lost their beloved sons back then called this place the "Island of Sorrow and Tears," from which the more widely known name "Island of Tears" originated. The island is connected to the Old Town's Trinity Suburb by an arched bridge, with a bronze icon of the Virgin Mary embedded in the foundation stone at the bridgehead, inscribed with the words "To the sons who died in Afghanistan." In the center of the island stands a small white stone chapel built in the style of 12th-century Old Rus' churches, surrounded by statues of weeping mothers, wives, daughters, and fiancées, some holding eternal flames as if waiting for their loved ones to return. The names of the fallen soldiers are engraved on the chapel walls, and the names of Afghan cities where battles took place are carved onto large stones scattered across the island; on one side, there is a bronze statue of a small angel covering his face with his hands, with the pool at his feet appearing to hold his tears. Inside the chapel, a capsule is sealed, containing a list of the fallen, letters to future generations, and soil brought back by mothers from the places where their sons died.Belarus · Minsk

Victory square is located in the city center of Minsk, the capital of Belarus, and is a key memorial site dedicated to commemorating the victory in the Great Patriotic War and the liberation of Minsk, as well as one of the city's important symbols. In the center of the square stands the Victory Monument, completed in 1954: at the top of the approx. 38 m high granite obelisk sits a replica of the bronze Order of Victory nearly 3 m high, shining in the sunlight. A Sword of Victory is placed in front of the monument base, and four bronze wreaths surround the monument body. The Eternal Flame next to the monument was lit in 1961 and has been burning ever since. Easily overlooked is the underground passage beneath the square: it houses a memorial hall opened in 1985, where the names of hundreds of Soviet heroes who sacrificed their lives for the liberation of Belarus are engraved on the circular corridor walls. It is worth slowing down to take a closer look when passing through.Belarus · Minsk

If you have the chance, you must come to Brest. Come to the fortress and feel the weight of history. It is cold and empty here, but also solemn. You will look up at the spire, and you will also look down at the eternal flame🔥. Although the environment is harsh and it sways with the cold wind, it is endless and will never go out.
